Riot is introducing a few changes to the Teamfight Tactics ranked system with Patch 9.16. This includes adjustments to the in-game matchmaking and the promotion/demotion systems that are in place.

On Twitter, technical game designer Geoff Marsi said the team is working to fix the situation where you can face the same player, or his ghost army, multiple times in a row. Given that most of the time the more favorable army will win (unless the power levels are very close and a few crits or attacks can decide the outcome either way), facing the same player multiple times in a row then leads to one of those players enjoying a nice win streak, while the other sinks down. According to Marsi, this will be “extremely unlikely” with patch 9.16 — not impossible, but “exceedingly rare”.

The change is an important one since it rewards players who build to beat the field of players and not punish them for running into their one counter army over and over again.

What’s more, there will be changes made to the ranked system. As it stands now, the system is “a little more forgiving that we intended”, Riot says. Some of those inconsistencies are just bugs, but others aren’t, namely in the Challenger/Grandmaster leagues.

“For players in Challenger and Grandmaster, you’re supposed to demote into Masters if you are at 0 LP at the end of the day, and then demote back to Diamond if you lose at 0 LP in Masters,” Riot’s blog explains. “However, when there aren’t enough Masters or Grand Masters players, it results in a situation where Challenger players can’t demote. Moving forward, when you lose LP while at 0 LP in GM or Challenger you’ll immediately be demoted to Diamond 1.

The changes are great overall and will come on top of the new Origin and four new champions arriving with Patch 9.16.
