Expecting some incredible miracles from Zombie Army Trilogy is about the same as hoping to see snow in the middle of a hot summer in Egypt. Naturally, there is no point in throwing loud accusations at the Rebellion team: the guys clearly put effort and experience into their project. But the fact remains – the studio’s new work turned out to be even weaker than their Aliens vs. Predator. In this review, I will try to explain in detail and in a human way why exactly the game is disappointing and why it did not live up to expectations.

The story of the series about a sniper who unexpectedly found himself in a zombie world started back in 2013, when Rebellion Developments presented Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army. At that time, the public met the project without much enthusiasm – the game seemed raw and secondary. Only echoes remained from the usual stealth for Sniper Elite, which has always been the heart of the series, and the once non-linear gameplay turned into simple shooting at waves of enemies. The developers did not offer new techniques or mechanics – everything came down to lying on the ground or kicking the enemy. What in the original looked logical within the framework of stealth, in the setting of a zombie shooter looked too poor.

Before players had time to properly digest the first part, the second one saw the light. But there were minimal changes: new maps, but the same graphics, the same mechanics and the same absurd fall of the main character to the ground. It would seem that it was time to close the topic, but Rebellion decided otherwise – zombie Nazis were clearly something more than just experiments for the studio.

That is why Zombie Army Trilogy was released two years later. It included both previous games with improved graphics and a bonus was the third, final chapter with several fresh ideas. This looked much more serious – as if the developers decided to finally finish their dark spin-off and put a fat period to this unusual story.

Graphics, locations and characters

When it comes to a sequel, you always want to understand what the developers decided to surprise players with. And the first thing that catches your eye – in addition to the strange grimaces of the characters – is, of course, the picture. Yes, the graphics here are far from the level of modern next-gen projects, but you can’t call it bad language. Some locations look really atmospheric and involuntarily make you linger to examine the details. It’s a pity that there are not many such places. But the proprietary X-Ray system, which allows you to literally examine your opponents from the inside, has remained virtually unchanged. But the bloody effects after hits have noticeably tightened up – they look much more realistic and convincing.

Another new feature was the ability to choose a character. Now four heroes are available at once, and each has their own backstory. Moreover, you can change the gender of the main character, so you can complete the game as both a man and a woman. To be honest, this is where the list of significant innovations almost ends. The developers, of course, added new maps, weapons and patched up the plot a bit, but all of this feels more like a familiar set of additions than a serious leap forward.

Multiplayer Zombie Army Trilogy

Single-player playthrough of Zombie Army Trilogy may well become a cure for insomnia. After just a couple of levels, the game begins to lull you to sleep with its monotony. Yes, at the very beginning there is some excitement – looking at the decomposing heads of Nazis and admiring the slow-motion hits on enemies can really be interesting. But this pleasure does not last long: an hour and a half – and that’s it. Then the player faces a dull cycle of actions: shooting zombies, searching for another artifact, some more shooting, opening a new zone, saving. And so on and on until the campaign comes to an end.

The plot? It can essentially be summed up in a couple of sentences. Hitler and his undead found a way to live forever, but as it turned out, this did not add brains to them. The thirst for flesh is the only thing that drives them. The player’s task is simple to the point of banality: kill all the dead and finally put an end to Nazism in its revived form. You definitely shouldn’t count on a serious script – the story feels like it was written “for show”.

And yet, if you play in co-op with friends, the campaign acquires at least some charm. The monotony ceases to be so striking, and the joint fight against hordes of zombies turns into a kind of entertainment. Moreover, at the end of the level you can always laugh, comparing statistics – who was the most accurate shooter, and who just ran and screamed.

As for the zombies themselves, there is at least some variety here. Among the enemies there are:

• kamikaze zombies, ready to explode right under your feet;
• armored monsters that are not so easy to put down;
• maniacs with chainsaws, at the sight of whom you want to stay away;
• and many other nasty creatures that require a different approach.

Some are enough to put down with a shot to the head, against others you have to use heavy weapons. This does add a bit of dynamism, but it doesn’t save the game from becoming boring. Most players are unlikely to stick with the single-player game for more than a couple of hours.

Zombie Army Trilogy: Is It Worth Playing?

Zombie Army Trilogy will certainly find its audience. Today, there are enough players who love to get together with friends to have a fun massacre against Nazi zombies. The cooperative campaign and the “Horde” mode, where you have to fight off endless waves of the dead, prevent the project from completely failing. But it is worth admitting: the very idea of ​​​​a “shooter about Nazi zombies” for many raises only one question – “seriously?”.

At least the developers did not decide to weave werewolves into the plot, otherwise we would have gotten something like “Nazi Lycan Army”. But seriously, the game quickly loses interest when played alone. Rebellion Developments released a project that can hardly be called either a full-fledged survival horror, or a driving shooter with exciting shootouts, or even a light entertainment attraction for a fun evening.
