Overall, I’ve always been a fan of 2K’s WWE series. Sure, these games have never been the benchmark for quality and stability – minor issues and bugs have cropped up all the time. But something clearly went wrong with WWE 2K20, and the number of bugs turned out to be off the charts.

Despite the sudden deterioration in graphics compared to the previous part, the game manages to slow down and lag even on fairly powerful PCs. Add to this endless loading screens, textures that periodically disappear, and unexpected crashes for no reason. Sure, it still falls short of the infamous WWE 2K18 Switch release, which was a completely unplayable nightmare, but it’s already pretty close.

The 2K Originals mode is locked away – you simply can’t get into it without additional DLC. But the career mode, which in WWE 2K19 pleasantly surprised with voiced dialogues, active participation of wrestling stars and even a tolerable story (for a sports game – this is great), has completely degraded in WWE 2K20. Now it’s something broken and unnecessary.

If in last year’s part it was at least interesting to watch the adventures of Buzz or Cole, then the new pair of heroes – Red and Trey – cause a yawn. The player is immediately offered to create both a female and a male character, but the center of attention here is Red. But her partner is a walking generator of stupid jokes and frankly cretinous behavior. Everything is strictly according to the latest “fashionable” trends. What’s even worse is that the heroes are already “deserved” wrestling stars who were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Now they simply remember their past, and the player must step by step go through 18 chapters based on the school wish list of these two. But the problem is that the events are weakly connected to each other, and the structure of the gameplay is monotonous:

• you watch dull cutscenes,
• immediately go to the match,
• fulfill the given condition,
• go to the next chapter.

And so on in a circle.

The situation with other modes is slightly better – they have remained familiar. The only major innovation is the Showcase Mode, which is entirely dedicated to women’s wrestling. It tells the story of the Four Horsewomen of the Apocalypse: Becky Lynch, Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Bayley. The player will be given the opportunity to go through all the significant moments of their careers and participate in key matches.

But the controls have hardly changed… although 2K managed to break even that. The collision of characters now works as it pleases: punches pass through opponents, wrestling moves – too. Sometimes this can play into the player’s hands – the opponent “misses” a powerful combination and remains vulnerable. But more often than not, it simply breaks the immersion and turns fights into a chaotic mess.

WWE 2K20 Leveling Up: Chaos, Limitations, and Unpleasant Surprises

The leveling system in the game has hardly changed since WWE 2K19. Wrestlers have specializations, and leveling is built around a large perk tree. It would seem that everything is familiar, but in reality – not quite. Characters at the beginning of their careers are so weak that compared to previous parts, they look frankly helpless. Experience points are awarded for completing tasks, but there is a catch: it is impossible to think through your build in advance. The next perk opens only after investing points in neighboring ones, and it is easy to lock yourself in a dead-end branch without the necessary improvements.

Depending on the character’s specialization, the available perk tree changes, but their location is sometimes complete chaos. At one point, you can find that the necessary enhancements are at the other end of the tree for a completely different specialization, and there are only unnecessary bonuses to strikes around.

Here’s what can spoil the impression of the leveling system:

• Inability to see the entire skill tree in advance.
• Risk of “locking” yourself in a dead-end build.
• Random placement of perks, not always related to the logic of specialization.
• Access to truly useful improvements may be too long and difficult.

Such a “pleasant” surprise.

WWE 2K20: Lootboxes, Disappointment, and a Little Wrestling

The customization in the game is impressive, but again hidden behind a monolithic wall of loot boxes. Without these “boxes with surprises” the choice is so meager that it is hard to call it worthy. Yes, the player can buy items directly, but the price tags make you laugh nervously. A regular cape for 12,000 VC? Let me remind you that the pre-order bonus is only 10,000 VC. But in WWE 2K20, customization is needed for two characters at once. In general, the Korean grind machines wipe away a tear of pride.

The Create-a-Belt mode, in which you could create championship belts and organize your own tournaments with the maximum level of madness, is not available yet. Perhaps it will be returned in one of the future patches, but there are no guarantees. But mixed team matches have been added to the game again, and the capabilities of the editors of custom videos, entrance scenes and victory animations have been expanded. However, all of these are just cosmetic improvements that do not bring the game up to the level of a full-fledged release.

What exactly makes me disappointed:

• Loot boxes, without which customization is almost non-existent.
• Inflated prices for in-game items.
• No Create-a-Belt mode.
• Minor improvements that do not save the situation.

Impressions? Disappointment, confusion and righteous anger. This game is simply not worth the time or money. Yes, the situation is not as catastrophic as with the NBA series from 2K, but it is still better to stay away from it. If you want normal wrestling, play WWE 2K19 or even 2K18. The only plus I noticed is that the models of the divas have become a little more detailed.
