Titan Quest Anniversary Edition

Ten years ago, Titan Quest confidently took its place among legends – where only the best of the best live. Appearing out of nowhere, like many so-called “Diablo killers”, it certainly did not overthrow the cult hit of Blizzard, but was able to worthily push it aside and become a full-fledged alternative in the world of ARPG. And it rightfully deserved it.
True, the game cannot be called ideal. It had its own weakness – like the Achilles heel of the hero of ancient Greek myths. One serious mistake, because of which the developers eventually decided to release an anniversary edition.

To be honest, there is no point in ranting about Titan Quest for long. It is unlikely that anyone will believe that since 2006, you could not have come across a mention of this game – about a brave hero who literally lives out the best myths of Ancient Greece, Egypt and the East. What, you really haven’t heard? Oh, you incorrigible…
Well, never mind, we’ll catch up now. The plot starts with a classic confrontation of generations: the once powerful titans, banished by the gods of Olympus, are thirsty for revenge. They break the threads of connection between the world of mortals and the celestials, send hordes of mythical monsters to the lands of people and begin to prepare the ground for their great return. And, as is customary in ancient Greek stories, only one person can stop them. True, this person will first run for hours with a rusty dagger at the ready, because even under the threat of the apocalypse, local merchants will never drop the price by a drachma.
However, such is the nature of the ARPG genre – here the story often serves as an entourage for the endless process of destroying everything that moves. Titan Quest respects mythology, deftly weaving familiar images of gods, monsters and ancient wonders into the narrative, and sometimes even gives good pathetic monologues. But the real drive begins not in the dialogues, but in the dynamics of the battle. Local problems are solved simply and elegantly – by a total cleansing of the entire aggressive population. Well, what did you expect? Such is the classic.
Nevertheless, it is the setting that makes Titan Quest special. The mechanics themselves are familiar and simple: run, click, collect trophies. But thanks to the non-trivial design of the world and its inhabitants, each adventure feels like a small discovery. There are no hackneyed fantasy cliches like orcs or goblins here — instead, legends come to life: cyclops, minotaurs, harpies, sphinxes. Instead of abstract castles and forests — majestic ruins of ancient civilizations and wonders of the world that we once looked at in children’s encyclopedias. Only now you can not only look at them, but also beat them up in the name of saving the world.

And this has its own special charm — as if you met old friends you had forgotten about, and they suddenly returned to your life. With a new look, but still with the same spirit of great tales.
Why Titan Quest Anniversary Edition Still Relevant Today
Clearing ancient paths from satyrs, zombies, living statues and insecure gods, our hero from time to time arranges real special effect fireworks. These are not just beautiful flashes – this is a sign: the character is becoming stronger and is ready for the most exciting part of Titan Quest – skill upgrades.
Unlike classic RPGs like Diablo, where you determine your path on the hero creation screen, here the system is built differently. Your character starts as a blank slate – and his class is formed in the process, by choosing two specializations. For example, a warrior at the eighth level can become not only a strong fighter, but also a warrior-mage, a dexterous killer or an impregnable conqueror, depending on the chosen development paths – fire, hunting or defense. In the same way, a modest sorcerer can evolve into a warlock, illusionist, druid or even a powerful summoner who subjugates the forces of nature. In total, there are more than thirty unique combinations available, and each profession is carefully balanced, which opens up a huge scope for experimentation. You can assemble the character you want, rather than trying to squeeze into a predetermined framework.
Thanks to this approach, Titan Quest stands out among its peers: it is deeper and more flexible than most representatives of the genre. Even if you are not one of those who replay games five times in a row, there will be something to do here. The possibilities for customization and setup of the build are so wide that everyone can build a style of play completely to suit themselves. There are no imposed rules, no mandatory classes – there is only freedom of choice. And although Titan Quest did not become a revolution in the genre, the Iron Lore studio managed to create a product that pleasantly surprised everyone. Thanks to a successful combination of mythological entourage, an interesting development system and competent game design, the game lived much longer than its creators. And it is not surprising that for its anniversary the project received a new life.
Anniversary Edition is a classic remaster in the best sense of the word. The developers did not break what worked perfectly, but carefully brought Titan Quest to modern standards. The main tasks – to transfer the game to the Steamworks platform, update the graphics for modern resolutions and correct minor rough spots – were completed flawlessly. But the team did not stop there. For the anniversary re-release, Titan Quest was immediately combined with a large addition, Immortal Throne. These are not just “bonus missions” – this is a full-fledged expansion that brings new professions, crafting systems, expanded inventory sorting and storage to the game. Now all this is available from the very beginning, making the journey through the worlds even more intense and comfortable. The campaign feels like a solid epic adventure, without breaks and artificial boundaries, although the fourth act can suddenly surprise with an increase in difficulty – after all, this is content for players who have already completed the main game.
But that’s not all. THQ Nordic have done a fine job with the balance of skills and characteristics, which has made battles even more interesting – let the changes be noticed mainly by avid fans who know the game by heart. Achievements have appeared – some of them will really require skill and patience, which will especially please collectors. They have added trading cards and – most importantly – full support for Steam Workshop.
And here Titan Quest reveals itself from a new side. It turned out that over the years after the release, a huge community of enthusiasts has grown around the game, creating user mods: from new classes and locations to stranger things like turning the hero into a boar. Now all this can be downloaded and installed literally in one click, without dancing with a tambourine. And among dozens of modifications, you can find real treasures that can easily give your favorite game a second, third, or even tenth life. Titan Quest Anniversary Edition is a perfect example of how to treat a classic: carefully preserving the spirit of the original, while carefully adjusting it to the modern demands of players. And although times change, good games, like real heroes, never get old.
Titan Quest Anniversary Edition – Pros, Cons, and Is It Worth Returning
Steam users complain about the stability of the re-release with three-story structures – and, frankly, we absolutely disagree with them. We don’t know which gods exactly had to be angered so that the game really crashed every hour and completely refused to connect to the servers, as they write in negative reviews. In 35 hours of solid co-op, we only had one crash – and that was during an attempt to exchange items. Apparently, the developers simply decided to recreate historical accuracy: everyone knows that the ancient Greeks exchanged things by throwing them on the ground – quickly and efficiently.
If we are to nitpick, then some aspects of the co-op clearly require a slight upgrade. The mode itself is excellent, but the usability is still a little dusty with time. What is missing first of all:
- the ability to send descriptions of found items directly to the chat,
- a separate window with full statistics of partners,
- a more flexible system of interaction between players.
You can get used to these little things, of course, but after the same Grim Dawn or other modern projects, Titan Quest sometimes creaks with old bones.
And yet, the Anniversary Edition is a real gift. And for those who still start their morning with a raid on Olympus, and for those who haven’t launched Titan Quest for eight years. The game pleases just as much as the first time, and the remaster only enhances this joy. I wouldn’t say that this is a titanic work of a reissue, but an excellent reason to remember one of the most soulful and eternally relevant ARPGs – especially when it is free.
