Screenshots from the game resemble pages from an old book of fairy tales, the same one that your grandmother once read to you before bed. Of course, we don’t know what kind of stories you were told back then – perhaps funny and kind, with an obligatory happy ending. But believe me: Sadwick’s story hardly fits into this canonical scheme.

The main character is a young clown from a tiny circus. His life is full of dark dreams and offensive awakenings. At night, he is tormented by nightmares in which the spirit of Stephen King’s works is clearly felt. And during the day, his brother Ben is waiting for him – rude, mocking, constantly criticizing. Ben doesn’t miss a single opportunity to make his younger brother look like a fool, to heap reproaches on him and even to give him a slap in the face. The grandfather, on whom he would so much like to rely, has completely forgotten about his existence, confusing his grandchildren with each other. Oh, and yes – get ready to see his old pantaloons in almost every second frame. At first it’s funny, but by the middle of the game you will already sigh when they appear.

In such an environment, Sadwick cannot help but dream of something more. He dreams of saving the world, exploits, perhaps – the glory of a poet. And then one day a chance to change his destiny appears on his path. His dull, gray existence suddenly turns into an amazing adventure, full of mysteries, miracles and strange encounters. Yes, Sadwick really does have to save the whole world. But don’t expect epic seriousness here. The Whispered World is deliberately designed in the style of touching childish naivety, sometimes bordering on cute stupidity. The first character you meet wears a frying pan on his head and turns out to be an undercover agent. A reptilian oracle with lantern eyes gives prophecies left and right. And the mysterious Kalida, for whom you will have to go through a good half of the game, will eventually turn out to be… no, I won’t spoil the surprise. See for yourself.

The most important thing: there are no empty, template characters in The Whispered World. Each of them is alive, memorable, with their own quirks and history. One only has to hear the lively squabble of two roadside stones arguing about the meaning of life, or the indignant tirades of Ruben, a pearl manufacturer, and you will understand with what love all this was invented. I want to talk about each of them separately. Ruben is a grumpy lazy person and the owner of a pearl factory. He decided that the ten thousand pearls he had collected would be enough for the rest of his life, and since then the island has been immersed in a sluggish, sleepy lethargy. Only the silence, the splash of the waves and the occasional sigh of the wind remind him of life. His faithful assistant Bando, a rough but good-natured retired soldier, sadly guards his master’s peace, yearning for the old days.

Two roadside cobblestones are engaged in endless philosophical debates: one dreams of setting out on a journey, the other values ​​the comfort of a settled life. And special agent Bobby, hiding under a cast-iron frying pan, is torn between megalomania and persecution mania. All these characters seem to have stepped off the pages of old moralizing tales. Their characters are painted in bright strokes, their motives are clear without unnecessary explanations. From the first minutes it is clear who is good and who evokes sympathy despite their oddities.

And then comes the important moment. The naivety of the narrative is deceptive. At some point you will catch yourself thinking: “This is a child’s game!” – and then you will encounter unexpectedly complex riddles. The Whispered World plays on contrasts: the simplicity of the form deceives, but does not simplify the content. Behind the charming shell there is a real challenge for those who like not only to observe, but also to think.

The Whispered World is not a game that can be seriously recommended to schoolchildren who are bored during breaks and chasing likes on social networks. Everything is much deeper here. Yes, most of the puzzles are classic quest tasks: finding lost objects, helping lazy characters who are in no hurry to share important information – first feed them, solve their riddles or give them, for example, a shovel. There is also pixel hunting, but it is not annoying – thanks to the artists. Hiding an object against the background of such a well-developed and beautiful location is not an easy task even for them. Here, every twig seems to have been drawn by the hand of Nikas Safronov. And how many funny and simply eccentric situations there are! For example, you launch Sadwick into the air from a homemade wooden cannon – and you can’t believe your eyes. Or you catch a rodent … on an old stinky sock. Pure surrealism.

But the real magic of The Whispered World puzzles is different. Their goal is not only to test your logic. It is an element of the atmosphere. Candles that need to be blown out along the entire coast. Ancient grandfather clocks that open the way to a secret if you turn the hands correctly. Secret doors that are only let in in a “special” way. Or, say, a chess problem explaining the principle of balance in nature – after all, if you teach, then teach beautifully! The developers have excellent taste – and this is felt in every detail. Even the music – the same one that usually quickly gets boring in quests – sounds like pleasant nostalgia here. Soft strumming, light notes of childhood … they do not get boring, but accompany. A separate story is the caterpillar Spot, Sadwick’s faithful companion. He is not a talkative bat from A Vampyre Story, and not an assistant who captures attention. Spot is silent, cute, but extremely useful. Sometimes he turns into a bubble of water, sometimes into a blazing flame, sometimes he splits into five tiny copies of himself to sort out some exotic nonsense. Everything is simple and convenient: his forms are accessible through a beautiful menu in the form of a folded page of a book – just move the cursor to the corner of the screen.

But the technologies on which the game is built are the last thing I want to talk about. And they are not the point. The main thing in The Whispered World is the visuals. Each frame is like an illustration from a fairy tale. Print it out – and into a children’s book. And even if the animation is leisurely, and 2D is classic, here it is just a stylish reminder of the glorious nineties, when games did not strive to be realistic, but simply tried to be beautiful.
