One tired me out, the other just bored me. But this PvP survival game is different. What is it about it that keeps me coming back? Why does it fill the void that the others couldn’t?

The first thing that catches your eye in this game is the appearance of the dinosaurs. They seem to come to life as illustrations from old popular science films and programs from our childhood, especially those with the voice-over of Nikolai Drozdov. Yes, the models have long since ceased to correspond to modern scientific data, but there is no need for this. The goal of the game is not to be an encyclopedia, but to create an atmosphere, and it copes with this task perfectly. Visually, the dinosaurs seem to have come off the screen of a popular prehistoric series – everything is recognizable, but at the same time filled with their own charisma.

There are few game mechanics here, and they are all subordinated to one goal: to survive at least a little. The interface is ascetic, the scales are minimal – no personal bases, character upgrades or endless quests. Your dinosaur is a temporary creature, mortal by definition. This is immediately clear, and this has its own special flavor: you know that you will not stay long, and therefore you enjoy every minute in this primeval world. You can leave at any time – if everything is done according to the rules, the progress will be saved, and you can come back later.

It all starts with a choice – the generator allows you to create a dinosaur of one of several species. Each has its own stages of maturation, two or three, with changes in appearance and characteristics. Only an adult can use the strengths of its species to the fullest: fight, hunt, or, for example, defiantly wag its tail in front of a predator, knowing that you are faster.

The controls are intuitive, but with nuances for each species. The balance in the game, as usual, is unstable: everything has long been mastered and “hacked” by experienced players. Nimble raptors easily bypass the clumsy T-Rex, but the Allosaurus can cope with both. In the end, it is not the number in the stats that decides everything, but your skill in PvP: how you control your particular individual.

While you are growing, the game does not forgive mistakes. Your dinosaur must eat and drink, and the island is huge. To find water and food, you have to sniff — literally. The sense of smell does not work by pressing a button: the dinosaur must stop and “smell the air”. After that, hints appear for a while — tracks, water sources, edible plants. Along with them, a temporary compass appears, which replaces the map and helps to remember the area. Beginners are better off starting with a herbivore — reconnaissance is easier with it, and your head is not filled with hunting worries.

It is easy to die here, especially if you play as a predator. Hunting requires concentration and patience. Both other players and neutral bots can become food — small animals that are convenient for training. At any time, at any stage, you yourself become prey. Yes, everything depends on the server settings, but by default the game does not make concessions — death is quite real, and often at the hands of another predator. After death, you will have to create a new dinosaur. Fortunately, leveling up takes only a couple of evenings, and you are again ready for harsh PvP battles.

There is only one map in the game, but what a map! It is large, divided into biomes, and crossed from north to south by a long river – you will not be left without water. Here, the diversity of locations is not as important as knowledge of the territory. It is not the stronger who survives, but the one who navigates better.

How to Survive and Hunt in The Isle

Sometimes the server rules and the game environment itself set you a simple but harsh task: survive at any cost. There is no mercy here – to stay alive, you will have to not only fight, but also snatch life from other players. As in any competitive games, the path to success lies through failures and practice. The experience of defeats is your best teacher, and advice from experienced players who know the mechanics well will help save nerves and time.

Battles in the game often resemble duels in flight simulators: whoever is more agile wins. Some dinosaurs need speed and open space, while others find it more advantageous to hide behind the terrain. Some are slow, but deliver powerful blows, while others prefer agility and quick attacks. At the same time, combat is not just fangs and claws: details such as bleeding or fractures are also important here. The winner is most often the one who first makes the enemy bleed and does not allow him to recover.

To become a successful hunter, you need attention, persistence and, of course, experience. Almost every animal cry you hear is a signal. Sometimes it’s a player, but more often it’s a bot. They can literally run under your nose, and you won’t even notice. I myself have more than once barely escaped from a fight with a bot that I didn’t have time to hear, or faced the consequences of someone else’s hunt. But all this is part of the training.

What is important for every hunter to develop:

• Hearing is your main ally, without it hunting is impossible.
• Visual attention is the ability to notice movement among leaves or grass.
• Reaction is to not miss the moment of attack or escape in time.
• Patience is bots do not appear often, but this is not a reason to rush.
• Knowledge of the map and bot behavior is the more you know, the higher your chances of a successful hunt.

Once you learn to identify sounds and find their source, the game will open up in a completely different way. Yes, it may seem difficult at first, but over time it becomes exciting.

Hunting bots is a real challenge. They appear infrequently and do not give themselves away in any way – except for sounds. Your main tool is hearing. If you hear a scream, try to determine where it comes from and go there. But be careful: you are not the only hunter on the map. When approaching, do not lose your vigilance – listen and observe. This way you can get right to the target.

Each predator has its own hunting style. One of the key elements is the ambush mode, which is activated if you sneak for a long time. In this mode, the speed increases dramatically – this is useful both when attacking a bot and in PvP against fast opponents. The main task is to get as close as possible and attack suddenly. After a few bites, the bot will begin to lose blood and leave a trail that you can follow until death.

However, remember that bots are mostly small prey. As your character grows, you will become stronger, and hunting them will cease to be a challenge. Then you will inevitably start looking towards a more serious target – other players. Hunting can be solo – especially if the server is empty – or in a group. The composition and size of the pack is regulated by the server rules. And if the number is exceeded, the system will automatically launch an event where the group is obliged to get rid of the extra member. So even within the pack, you should not relax.

Co-op and Modes in The Isle

In this game, you can unite in groups – whether for PvP battles or just for joint survival. And to attract a female audience (or just romantics), the developers added the ability to create couples and acquire nests. To have offspring, you will need a male and a female of the same species – racial and accent differences do not matter. After laying an egg, you can invite another player – he will be born from this very egg. This is a great way to help a beginner or, for example, to make it easier to level up complex species like a tyrannosaurus or triceratops: the “baby” will be protected by adults, and at the same time supplied with food.

However, the game world is far from paradise: most servers have strict rules – both between species and within one. If the number of a group exceeds the permissible limit, its participants are obliged to drive away the extra ones, even their own kind, as soon as they meet each other’s eyes.

When choosing a server, it is worth paying attention to the number of players – the more there are, the easier it is to find a company to play together. The project has a fairly stable community and enthusiastic administrators. What is nice is that despite the harsh gameplay, players in the chat are often ready to help with advice, especially for beginners.

Server modes

Each server can operate according to its own rules: how many players can be in a group, whether mixed species are allowed (usually this concerns herbivores) and how the nest and family system is structured.

Sandbox

Ideal for PvP, experimenting with species or just relaxing. All creatures are open here, from cubs to adults, and nothing prevents you from simply exploring the game or practicing.

Progression

Suitable for those who want to feel progress and the value of efforts. For every minute of survival, points are awarded that can be spent on discovering new species – even those that are unavailable in the regular game. But there is a nuance: if you die, you lose points. This mode motivates caution and strategy.

Survival

The main mode on which the entire project is based. Everything is for adults here: a limited selection of species, a dangerous world and frequent PvP battles. Each server has its own rules, from RP-feeding with deep role-playing to real hardcore. The latter are especially popular: predators are forbidden to unite with herbivores, mixed groups are strictly limited, and the loss of even one member is taken seriously. Such servers give a storm of emotions and a lot of adrenaline – especially in mass battles. Sometimes, for a donation or as part of events, players are given access to exclusive types.

Monetization and donation in The Isle

The mechanics of the game itself simply do not allow manipulative monetization to be built into it. There are no rewards for the time spent in the game – progress is not saved, and each start starts from scratch. Therefore, there is no collecting or endless leveling. Everything comes down to survival, and if you do monetization, then it is around this. But without survival, the game loses all meaning, because all other functions that go beyond the simulation have already been implemented in the “sandbox” and “progression” modes. This was the original idea.

Although, of course, in the world of capitalism there is nothing sacred – sooner or later any mechanism can be turned into a donation trough. And, surprisingly, enterprising minds are already trying to do this. For example, on the server where I usually play, dinosaurs are sold from 15 to 500 rubles. Not being a fan of online games, I cannot objectively assess the level of donation. Personally, I can only imagine buying it as a way to support a specific server if I decide to stay there for a long time. But I’m unlikely to get any pleasure from the purchase itself.

There are other “joys” that are common in online cooperative games. Here’s what you might encounter:

• battle passes with rewards for activity;
• daily and weekly tasks;
• loot boxes disguised as roulettes;
• “rewards” for progress, the meaning of which sometimes remains unclear;
• leveling systems that do not always obviously affect gameplay.

From the outside, all these mechanics look as intrusive and alien as in other games where developers try to extract money by any means. Although, I admit, if the content is of low value, then loot boxes for in-game currency may be appropriate.

I admit honestly, when I went to my profile and saw a list of some awards (which, it turns out, I had already earned), as well as instructions on how to get more and faster, this caused me a strong disgust. If you delve deeper into this system, it instantly kills all that atmospheric pleasure for which I enter the game at all. Perhaps, the online format is just not my thing.

As for popular servers, there is a clan system. Joining a clan gives certain perks, but not in the “pay-to-win” style, but rather for those who are ready to spend a lot of time on the game. It all looks a little tense, even “raid-like” – as if the game should become your second job. I haven’t tried clans myself, and the game as a whole doesn’t really encourage it. Perhaps it’s not about manipulation, but simply about the desire to tie players to a specific server.

The Isle throws you into a brutal, prehistoric world where survival is everything—and your PC better be ready for it. To even set foot on this dino-infested island, you’ll need a 64-bit version of Windows 10, along with a decent processor like an Intel Core i5-4430 or AMD FX-6300. With just 25 GB of space required and support for DirectX 11, it’s not the most demanding game on the market—but it is one of the most atmospheric. The better your setup, the more you’ll feel like a true creature of the wild.
