In the end — “well, not bad, but without goosebumps.” Therefore, many people looked at House of Ashes with hope: suddenly Supermassive finally remembered why we loved Until Dawn, and will bring back the very magic of choice, the atmosphere of hopelessness and nervous expectation?

The events of House of Ashes take us back to 2003, a time when the Iraq war is coming to an end, but for many it is still far from over. Dusty winds, dry air, the smell of burning and fatigue — all this has become a familiar background for soldiers who dream of only one thing: to return home. But fate decides otherwise.
An American squad goes in search of a chemical weapons depot. It seems that this is just another task — routine and predictable. However, one earthquake ruins all plans. The ground opens up right under their feet, and the fighters, along with several Iraqis, fall into the depths of an ancient underground temple. And there, in total darkness, they will face something that defies explanation.
The main characters are five different people, each with their own past and inner demons. CIA agent Rachel King and her ex-husband Eric ended up together against their will, and now old wounds are being reopened. There is pain, understatement, resentment between them, but also a spark that does not seem to have died out yet. Marines Jason and Nick are men of war, for whom orders are more important than feelings, but humanity breaks through in them when life hangs in the balance. And Salim, an Iraqi officer, just wants to see his son and put an end to this madness. Deep down, each of them is not a hero — just a man trying to survive.

Supermassive Games managed to make not just a horror, but a human story disguised as a military thriller. It’s scary here, not only from the screams in the dark, but also from how quickly a person turns into a beast when the world collapses around them. The atmosphere of war gives the game an unusual sound: there is no “right” and “guilty” in it — there is only fear, choice and consequences.
At first, House of Ashes resembles Spec Ops: The Line — the same sand, weapons, and the feeling that everything is happening in vain. But the deeper the heroes descend into the temple, the clearer it becomes: it’s not about the war. It’s not a flesh-and-blood enemy waiting for them underground, but an ancient darkness that knows no mercy.
The exploration scenes feel the spirit of Uncharted — an exciting sense of adventure, when every artifact found holds a piece of mystery. But unlike adventure games, there is no reward around every corner, but danger.
From the very first minutes, House of Ashes captures the atmosphere: spacious ruins, muffled footsteps, rustling in the dark and the feeling as if someone is watching. You can literally feel the cold on your skin, hear the characters breathing, feel their fear and hope.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes: Gameplay and New Production Quality
It becomes clear from the very first minutes: House of Ashes is a step forward for the entire The Dark Pictures anthology. Supermassive Games finally listened to the players and did some noticeable work on the bugs.
Firstly, the game mechanics have changed. Now you can choose the difficulty level — a great solution for those who used to swear at the merciless QTE, where one wrong click decided the fate of the character. It is also possible to freely rotate the camera 360°, as in classic third-person action games. Otherwise, the gameplay remains familiar, but it feels much smoother and more comfortable — there is less irritation and more engagement.
Secondly, it is worth noting how much the quality of the production has increased. The first scenes of House of Ashes look like an interactive movie — competent camera angles, dynamic transitions, a sense of space and tension. If Man of Medan and Little Hope looked like good TV series, now the picture is closer to a full-length movie.

There is an episode that perfectly shows how the new direction works. The heroes carefully make their way along a narrow stone ledge. The player needs to press the button in time so that the character does not stumble — everything is familiar. But after a couple of seconds, the camera zooms in on a similar rock… and nothing happens. Your fingers are already ready for action, your heart is beating faster — but the trap is only in your head. It’s a small but ingenious moment: the game literally plays with the player, creating tension where there doesn’t seem to be any.
The characters have also become more lively. The dialogues sound more natural, the emotions are more convincing, and the reaction to what is happening is finally like a real one. Even in the prologue, which used to be full of awkward scenes, now only a couple of moments bring a smile — and that’s more kind than mocking.
House of Ashes doesn’t turn the series upside down, but it feels like the authors have finally found the right tone. Everything has become a little better — the graphics, the direction, and the characters themselves. And even though it’s still a long way from the level of Until Dawn, now, for the first time in a long time, I want to believe that The Dark Pictures Anthology is really moving in the right direction.
The main shortcomings of House of Ashes
Despite the remarkable progress, House of Ashes still bears the imprint of old sores that have been dragging on The Dark Pictures Anthology from the very beginning. It’s clear that Supermassive Games is trying, but it’s just around the corner, but it’s not reaching out yet.
The character models have become, to put it mildly, stranger. Sometimes the faces look like the characters are frozen somewhere between an emotion and a wax mask – and it makes you feel uncomfortable, but clearly not in the way the developer wanted. The effect of the ominous valley here is sometimes stronger than the monsters themselves. And when a scene intended to be creepy suddenly resembles not “Aliens” or “Predator,” but an almost comedic “Operation Dead Snow,” you don’t want to scream in fear, but to grin.
The gameplay is also not going smoothly. The camera sometimes chooses such angles that you lose a sense of control, and the characters move so slowly, as if they were out for a walk, rather than trying to escape. This is especially felt on the stairs — it seems that they are the main enemy of the whole team.

To understand where House of Ashes is still stalling, here’s a short list of its problems:

Uneven animation and “waxy” faces of the characters make it difficult to empathize;

The military setting reduces the feeling of fear — the fighters are too confident;

The consequences of the decisions are poorly felt, and the variability is still conditional.
In addition, the new entourage played a cruel joke with the game. When driving professional soldiers, it’s hard to get really scared – these guys are used to danger, they have machine guns and bulletproof vests, which means the darkness no longer seems so defenseless. The first hours of the game are more like a tense military thriller than a horror. There is anxiety in the air, but not terror. I want to believe that House of Ashes will straighten its shoulders and finally start scaring for real.
The variability is also not clear yet. In the prologue, one failed QTE can change the outcome of a scene, but it feels more like an accident than an important choice. In a series where every decision must have weight, such a start is a bit disappointing.
However, House of Ashes feels like a game that knows where it’s going. She is like a soldier who has undergone heavy training and is already standing on the front line, ready to show what she is capable of. Yes, the steps are hard, but moving forward is obvious. Supermassive Games is finally starting to build a horror game in which there is a place not only for fear, but also for humanity — which means that hope is still alive.
