Summer of ’58

Summer of '58

Six months ago, EMIKA_GAMES released a captivating game called Find Yourself. Much like Alexander Reshetnikov’s previous work, Locked Up, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The developer consistently informs players that completing his games typically takes between 60 to 120 minutes. Summer of ’58 adheres to this guideline, requiring approximately an hour and a half to finish. On the bright side, this is quite beneficial; shorter games can be perfect for a laid-back evening where you want to unwind without too much mental strain or effort. They provide just the right amount of entertainment without overwhelming you.

The plot, although simple, keeps you on the edge of your seat, immersing players in a dark and sinister atmosphere. In 1958, a mysterious disappearance of all the inhabitants of the Youth pioneer camp occurred – both children and staff. Not a single body was found, and the alleged culprit was never brought to trial. This event forced the camp to be urgently closed, and local residents have since avoided it, telling creepy legends about terrible secrets hidden behind the rickety gates. In an attempt to get to the bottom of the truth, journalist Morton goes to the abandoned camp, intending to find evidence of the crime or at least shed light on the inexplicable events. But the past is not going to open up just like that: something, possibly supernatural, inhabiting this place greets the stranger with hostility. Morton will have to face terrifying manifestations, both physical and otherworldly, that will try their best to stop his investigation.

Summer of ’58 unfolds a linear story with a single ending, which nevertheless leaves room for reflection and hints at a possible continuation. The ending evokes an uneasy feeling of incompleteness, warming up interest in the next chapter of this terrifying story.

Closed space

The action takes place in only two main locations, not counting the climax. The story starts inside the camp building, where oppressive anxiety hovers. Moving through the tense environment, Alex finds himself in an abandoned and securely locked hospital, preserving the echo of long-forgotten events. The explored area is compact: only a few cramped rooms connected by passages, which enhances the feeling of isolation and discomfort. However, thanks to the rapid development of events and unexpected plot twists, players will definitely not be bored while uncovering dark secrets. The atmosphere is additionally saturated with expressive surroundings – the camp is literally imbued with the spirit of the Soviet era: old toys, everyday objects, yellowed newspapers and propaganda posters are scattered everywhere, awakening nostalgia and enlivening the historical context.

A path without obstacles

There aren’t any intricate puzzles or major obstacles leading to the conclusion of the game. Players can expect a smooth experience, as they will always receive helpful hints guiding them on what actions to take next. Essentially, the gameplay is primarily focused on locating specific objects that activate scripts, which then enable further advancement in the story.

Summer of ’58 attempts to create an atmosphere of fear and suspense, featuring an abundance of jump scares that can truly catch you off guard. Some of these moments are genuinely startling, though they often elicit a reaction more from surprise than from actual terror. The game balances its attempts at horror with moments that keep players engaged in the narrative.

Nice graphics

Summer of ’58 is crafted on the Unreal Engine 4, delivering a visually appealing experience that matches the quality of Alexander’s other projects. The graphics are engaging and pleasant, though they may not be particularly groundbreaking. I encountered no issues with optimization, as I didn’t observe any significant fps drops or freezing moments during gameplay. The presence of glitches and bugs is minimal, with nothing severe that would disrupt the experience. The music effectively enhances the overall atmosphere and is thoughtfully selected to fit the game’s tone. There isn’t any voice acting; instead, the narrative unfolds through various notes, newspaper clippings, and the character’s introspective thoughts, adding depth to the storytelling. This approach creates an immersive experience that draws players into the world.

Conclusion

“Summer of ’58” has much in common with other titles by EMIKA_GAMES. It presents a brief experience, featuring a straightforward yet engaging storyline packed with jump scares that keep players on edge. If you find enjoyment in Reshetnikov’s previous projects, this game will likely resonate with you as well. However, it’s important to note that such events would probably not have occurred in the USSR, particularly in a pioneer camp setting. Yet, this observation is merely a minor critique of the overall plot. The game still succeeds in creating an eerie atmosphere that captivates its audience.

About ugly actions

In conclusion, I want to address the situation regarding Summer of ’58 on Steam. At the end of August, Alexander raised concerns that, despite the impressive number of positive reviews (currently 91%), some dishonest individuals are purchasing the game, completing it in under two hours, and then requesting refunds.

In my view, this behavior is, at the very least, quite unkind. If you enjoyed the game and it met your expectations, then you should keep it. If you didn’t find it satisfying, please consider providing constructive feedback about your experience. After all, 205 rubles (and recently, Summer of ’58 was even available for just 157 rubles on sale) is not such a large amount to warrant this kind of conduct. It’s important to support developers who put effort into creating enjoyable experiences for players.
