The game’s events take players to the colorful 1970s — an era of bold suits, neon signs, and mafia showdowns. The main character is a janitor named Bob, but don’t underestimate him: he is an indispensable person in the circle of criminal friends, eliminating the consequences of their dark deeds. In the evenings, Bob likes to relax over a game of poker with these very “buddies” — to laugh, remember the hard times, tell a story or two.
Each task begins with a characteristic ring of an old phone in Bob’s house. On the other end of the line is a fresh “job”: an address where something went wrong, bodies, a clue or two — and all this needs to be carefully “swept under the carpet.”
Before leaving for work, the player can calmly stroll around Bob’s cozy home. Here you can look at a fresh newspaper, turn on the radio with catchy music of the era or watch a news release, where sometimes ticklish moments from the hero’s past emerge. A special warmth is given by the opportunity to chat with Bob’s mother – a wise, slightly grumpy, but loving woman, adding humanity to this criminal mosaic.
Having received all the necessary information, Bob takes a suitcase and goes to carry out one of twenty carefully designed missions – each of which has prepared for him not only a lot of dirty work, but also unexpected turns.

Gameplay
Every location is packed with interactive elements, adding depth to the experience. For ease of understanding, let’s break them down into these categories:
- Hiding Places: Various barrels, large flowers, lockers, and other objects serve as great spots to conceal yourself. Enemies won’t spot you, even if you leap into one of these locations right in front of them; for them, it remains a blind spot.
- Movable Items: These let you change the paths of enemies, allowing you to bait them into traps and then secure them or find a quiet spot to hide yourself. Clever use of these items can greatly simplify navigating certain areas and enhance your chances of survival.
- Hatches and Doors for Fast Travel: As the name implies, these allow you to zip from one side of a location to the other in an instant, and enemies cannot pursue you through these openings. You can also carry a body while using these, making strategic escapes much easier.
- Sound-Making Objects: Devices like microwaves, speakers, and TVs draw the attention of police officers. Those attracted to the noise will focus intently on the source until it falls silent, giving you a chance to slip away unnoticed.
- Ways to get rid of bodies. The main method is still using a car, but in some locations, much more original and unusual approaches are available. For example, you can throw the body out of the window or even “treat” it to an alligator hiding nearby.
To discover such unusual opportunities, use the so-called “janitor’s intuition.” Press the spacebar – the camera will rise, providing an overview from above and highlighting all objects that can be interacted with. However, be on the alert: when this function is activated, time in the game does not stop, and the enemy may suddenly appear nearby. In this text, we uncover a captivating aspect that’s rather uncommon for the stealth genre: everything previously described is arranged randomly with each new attempt. As a result, memorizing patterns becomes impossible, compelling you to adapt to the game and respond dynamically to the evolving situation.
Bobs Locations
Additionally, enemies are lurking at every location, waiting for Bob to make a move: he must discreetly remove bodies and evidence only after law enforcement has stumbled upon them. A variety of adversaries emerge as the game progresses, each with unique traits and behaviors that challenge the player:
- Standard Patrol Officer: If the hero enters this officer’s line of sight, the officer will instinctively begin to chase them down. Upon catching up, they will swiftly handcuff the hero, making escape difficult.
- Fast-Running Officer: This officer is characterized by their remarkable speed, making them a formidable opponent who can quickly close the gap if they spot the hero.
- Stationary Officer with a Donut: This officer tends to remain stationary, keeping their eyes fixed in one direction. Players can cleverly distract them using an object that makes noise, providing a brief opportunity to slip by unnoticed.
- Guard on Watch: Similar to the stationary officer, this guard is also fixed in place. However, should the hero enter their field of vision, they will alarmingly whistle to summon nearby patrols, increasing the stakes for the player.
- Alert Guard: If this guard happens to catch a glimpse of the hero, they will enter a heightened state of vigilance for the entire mission. This means they will move faster and be more aware of their surroundings, making it increasingly challenging for the player to navigate through the area.
- Officer Summoning Backup: This is a more advanced version of the watchman. Unlike their predecessor, this officer has the ability to move around the area.
- Armed Officer. This formidable adversary surfaces in the later stages and represents the toughest challenge, as once he spots you, there’s simply no chance to flee or hide: he immediately fires to eliminate any threat.
You’ll also encounter surveillance cameras, but only in one of the final levels. Their operation is quite clear and doesn’t require any extra clarification or explanation from me.
As mentioned earlier, in every location, we are tasked with eliminating a specific number of bodies while also gathering evidence that our target has carelessly hidden in their apartment (definitely not the smartest choice). On top of that, for most assignments, we need to clean up a certain percentage of blood, which our protagonist manages to handle with… an enormous vacuum cleaner, certainly an unconventional tool for the job.
Interestingly, sliding over puddles of blood boosts our character’s speed, which can prove invaluable during high-stakes chases. The scale of the levels, as well as the number of enemies and interactive elements, gradually increases as the game progresses. While the initial contracts can be approached with relative ease, by the midpoint of the game, players find themselves grappling with more complex environments. Figuring out where to go next becomes a challenge in itself. Players must closely analyze the surroundings and enemy patrol routes, as sometimes you only have a fleeting moment to dash for a concealed clue before being spotted.
The locations we encounter are remarkably diverse; we’ll be cleaning in a budget hotel characterized by its cramped corridors and tiny rooms, as well as on various farms with sprawling fields and barns, and even on rooftops, where finding shelter can be a significant stroke of luck. Each setting presents unique challenges and opportunities, enhancing the overall immersive experience of the game.
Interesting plot
The narrative unfolds through engaging conversations, as there are no cutscenes present in the game, both before and after the missions. It becomes apparent that our protagonist is a genuine gambling enthusiast, deeply entrenched in the world of boxing wagers. As fate would have it, he eventually finds himself completely overwhelmed by debt, owing significant sums to those who had generously compensated him for his questionable tasks. Former friends frequently call his home, even resorting to threats against his poor elderly mother, which adds an unsettling layer to the story. However, in a twist of fate, Bob soon encounters a local serial killer who is willing to pay him double for his dark services.
While this storyline may not be exceptionally strong or groundbreaking, one might wonder if it’s truly essential for a game of this nature. Additionally, a surprising twist towards the end may not be overly shocking, but it will certainly provide a moment of amusement and intrigue for players, keeping them engaged until the very last moment.
Graphic part
When it comes to Serial Cleaner, the graphics truly stand out: the game is alive with bright, vibrant colors, and the levels are filled with intricate details that create a rich, immersive environment. Each scene is designed to feel dynamic and engaging. There’s also a fun interactive element: when you first launch the game, it prompts you for permission to access your geolocation data. If you opt in, the in-game time will sync with real-world time. Play during the night, and expect dark, shadowy environments; choose to play during the day, and you’ll enjoy the bright, cheerful sunlight streaming through.
The highlight of the experience is undoubtedly the amazing jazz soundtrack. As the game progresses and the storyline intensifies, it transitions to energetic electric guitar riffs that really elevate the action. It’s incredibly entertaining to evade a couple of patrolling officers while carrying a body, all set to the backdrop of a smooth saxophone. If you appreciated the music in This Is The Police, you’re sure to find much to enjoy in this game as well, as the soundtrack perfectly complements the thrilling gameplay.
Verdict Serial Cleaner
After all that’s been discussed, it might seem like this game is flawless, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. While Serial Cleaner has many strengths, it also has a noticeable weakness: the gameplay feels rather simplistic and repetitive throughout. Sure, new enemies pop up regularly, and the locations grow in size, but the core experience remains unchanged, and the game fails to introduce any innovative mechanics. This is where the brevity of the game comes into play—there are only 20 locations, which means it doesn’t have the chance to wear out its welcome before you start to feel bored.
Additionally, I found the AI’s intelligence lacking when it comes to searching cabinets and other potential hiding spots. While this might seem frustrating, it could negatively affect the game’s pacing if the AI were more competent. Moreover, like the oversized vacuum meant for collecting blood, it’s simply a gameplay convention that can be easily overlooked if you’re caught up in the fun.
For those who find the main storyline a bit lacking, there are extra contracts to explore. You can unlock these by discovering hidden items scattered throughout the various locations (which won’t be highlighted by your “sense”). These cleverly concealed items provide a humorous nod to iconic films from that era, adding an extra layer of enjoyment. In a similar fashion, there are outfits hidden throughout the game that allow you to dress the main character in quirky and amusing costumes, enhancing the fun factor. Additionally, a challenge mode exists that significantly ramps up the difficulty: it can render enemies’ fields of vision invisible, remove your beloved sense entirely, or impose strict time constraints, forcing you to restart from the beginning if you happen to get caught. Overall, Serial Cleaner is an excellent game that, in my view, every enthusiast of pixel art, arcade gameplay, and stealth mechanics should take the time to experience.
