In addition, the gaming industry itself in those years resembled a wild frontier, where the rules had not yet been established: an atmosphere of daring experiments and spontaneous imitation reigned. Developers were not afraid to try something new – hence the emergence of truly strange, but memorable projects, many of which left an indelible mark in the memory of gamers.
A special place in this experience was occupied by the feeling of discovery: finding a mysterious game accidentally found on the market, or a strange clone of a famous hit caused delight and a thirst for exploration. The path to a new game was often a real adventure – be it a holiday gift, a visit from a friend with an installation disk, or a capricious seller from whom you managed to bargain for a rare cartridge. Games in those days did not just entertain – they united. We shared disks, gathered around screens, discussed playthroughs and laughed together at ridiculous moments. These sessions were rare and precious, and therefore each of them became an event. Since most of us did not have constant access to new games, we learned to appreciate every opportunity to touch a new world, and to adapt to everything that came to hand – after all, another chance might not present itself soon.
Today, I want to share a heartwarming story about a New Yearās gift that has remained in my memory for a lifetime. For some reason, this particular holiday has left a profound mark on my heart. Naturally, they werenāt the genuine article; they were a robust, Chinese knockoff. But back then, who cared about authenticity? The excitement of unwrapping a gift was more than enough to fill me with joy.
As an unexpected bonus, I also found a special disc featuring a game. Honestly, I canāt quite fathom why they chose Septerra Core amidst so many options. Perhaps the clever seller was trying to offload a product that had been gathering dust. Or maybe it was influenced by the widespread fascination with Sailor Moon, a trend I had fallen into a couple of years earlier. My parents likely recognized that familiar “Chinese” art style, which made it even more appealing to me.
So, under the enchanting glow of the moonlight, I quickly indulged in a variety of New Year’s treats before diving headfirst into a new game installation. An hour later, it dawned on me that this game was going to push me to my limits in ways I hadnāt anticipated. I mentioned my unique experiences for a reason, after all. You see, players could engage with entire genres from a refreshingly different perspective. For instance, while I was deeply engrossed in CnC and Age of Empires on my very first console, I listened with a mix of confusion and curiosity as my friend excitedly raved about something strange appearing on his screen. Ages ago, a fierce and tumultuous conflict between the noble god Marduk, a symbol of justice and courage, and the cunning demon Gemma shattered Septerra into distinct “layers.” Each layer, stretching from the planet’s fiery core to its lush surface, is composed of floating islands and vast continents intricately linked by a singular “spine” that weaves through the skies. Every layer boasts its own unique inhabitants, nations, and vibrant cultures, each with rich histories and traditions. At the pinnacle of this world, the Chosen reignātechnologically advanced and battle-hardened “lords” under the rule of their self-proclaimed Emperor. They assert their lineage as descendants of Marduk, thus granting themselves the absolute authority to dictate the fates of those dwelling in the lower layers. Moreover, the diverse world of Septerra harbors a layer that serves as a haven for daring pirates and intrepid adventurers, while another functions as a grand marketplace and the global hub for trade (and smuggling). In addition, a layer is home to two formidable nations that bravely challenge the Chosen’s rule. To maintain their supremacy, the Chosen cunningly stoke the fires of conflict between these nations, manipulating tensions to their advantage, alongside nurturing numerous other settlements, cultures, and even races that extend beyond mere humanity, enriching the tapestry of this extraordinary world.
However, before setting out on a journey through these places, it is necessary to acquire your own vessel – a step without which the adventurer’s path does not begin…
“Shell 2”, the second tier, has become not only a haven, but also a home for the main character. The inhabitants of this level have learned to survive, finding value in what the inhabitants of the upper layers consider garbage and throw down without hesitation. From these fragments of the Chosen, they create bright settlements, branched networks of infrastructure and even autonomous robots that make life easier. Maya, our heroine, is an orphan living under the care of her kind but life-weary uncle. Her parents died during another conflict that broke out in the skies above their home, and now she has to find her own way in this complex world, where dangers and dreams are closely intertwined.
Maya is a resilient and self-assured young woman, known for her strength and quick thinking. Sheās beloved by the locals, serving as a persistent thorn in the side of the ambitious mayor, who seeks to control everything. With remarkable skill, she handles her rifle with precision. Additionally, she takes care of the younger ones in her community, including the local scamp, Tory, who is always chasing after risky adventures in hopes of earning some quick cash. Once again, while pulling this naĆÆve fool out of trouble, Maya stumbles upon the dangerous schemes of one of the notorious Chosen Lords, Doskius. This lord intends to hasten an ancient prophecy that could reunify their fractured planet. Seeing himself as a messianic figure, Doskius is willing to make any sacrifice necessary, even betraying his own kin in his quest for power. Haunted by the tragic fate of her parents, Maya is determined to thwart this lordās dark ambitions. Thus begins our thrilling journey, where we must gather steadfast and often surprising allies from unexpected places, traverse the globe in search of answers, and face Doskius in a climactic confrontation that will test our limits.
Graphics and aesthetics
Drawing inspiration from the mechanics of Japanese RPGs like Septerra Core, the game also captures the vibrant visual style of 90s anime. You can spot this influence in the sharp features and colorful hairstyles of the characters. This aesthetic is reflected in the immersive world designāa fascinating tech-fantasy realm where demons and undead coexist alongside advanced lasers, while the heavy artillery of flying ships creates ample space for thrilling sword fights.
The game doesnāt strive for 3D graphics and embraces a full 2D aesthetic, which gives it a distinct charm. While it may not impress as much as Final Fantasy VIII, released in the same year, it has aged remarkably well compared to many early 3D titles. The character and enemy sprites are large and richly detailed, making every encounter visually appealing. Most environments and cityscapes still hold up beautifully today, showcasing the creative vision of the developers.
The animation of local magic and “summons” truly deserves a special mention. Considering the limited budget and technical constraints, many spells appear quite stunning for their time and lower resolution. I must highlight the world map; I honestly can’t recall any JRPG from that era featuring a map that is as beautifully crafted and intricately detailed as this one.
Music and sound
Sadly, this is the most disappointing aspect of the game. It features only a couple of musical themes, and they’re not particularly engaging, quickly becoming annoying after just a few hours of play. The reason for this lack of variety lies in the limited space available on the CD. Music had to be sacrificed since every single dialogue in the game is fully voiced. Whether itās a crucial plot moment or light-hearted banter with NPCs, everything is performed by talented actors. Additionally, each NPC provides a unique dialogue snippet tailored to every playable character, adding a layer of depth to interactions. While I canāt say this justifies the sparse musical background, I genuinely doubt the game would have been as captivating, given its numerous flaws, if the dialogues werenāt fully voiced.
In total, there are only about 30 minutes of ambient and battle music. Thatās quite sparse for a game that stretches over 60 hours, leaving players craving more musical diversity to enhance their experience.
Gameplay Septerra Core
Septerra Core is often regarded as a true classic in the realm of JRPGs. The gameplay is heavily influenced by the foundational styles of early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles, where we embark on an epic journey across a sprawling world map. Players navigate between diverse cities and intricate dungeons, collecting valuable loot from vanquished foes and exploring hidden treasures.
What sets Septerra Core apart, however, are its unique features, particularly in combat mechanics, magic systems, and narrative structure. At any given moment, we manage a party of three characters ā Maya and two companions chosen from a diverse cast, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, adding layers of strategy to our adventures.
The battles are conducted using an Active Time Battle system, where both our characters and enemies have an initiative gauge that fills in real-time, influenced by their speed stats. As the gauge fills, time freezes once it reaches a critical point, allowing us to make tactical decisions ā whether to unleash a powerful attack, cast a strategic spell, or use a healing potion. What truly makes Septerra distinctive is its innovative approach to this system: the initiative gauge is divided into three segments, enabling players to take action immediately or to wait for more potent abilities and spells to become available.
Abilities can be unlocked through various meansāby completing secret quests, reaching specific levels, or purchasing upgrades for weapons in the shop. The local magic system is even more fascinating. Characters do not possess individual mana; instead, magical points accumulate in a shared reservoir known as the “core,” which is utilized for all abilities and spells. While abilities can be activated through the initiative gauge, casting magic requires obtaining local tarot cards that trigger spells.
Initially, the first cards are quite simple and not particularly effectiveāthese include elemental spells, status effects, or defensive spells. However, once you compile a small deck, a new and exciting mechanic emerges: combination. By leveraging the gauges of multiple characters simultaneously, we can forge our own unique spells. This can result in something straightforward and intuitive, such as using the “barrier” card combined with “all” to provide protection for the entire group. Moreover, adding “fire” to the mix with “barrier” + “all” will grant fire immunity to the whole team, showcasing the strategic depth of the system.
Eventually, we acquire cards like “Call,” which unleash formidable summons, and “Mirrors,” which reverse spell effects, along with various others that can dramatically turn the tide of battle in our favor, making each encounter more strategic and engaging. All the local magic, including the powerful summons, plays a crucial role in shaping our adventure. The third aspect that truly astonished my ten-year-old self was the Point-and-Click mechanics woven into the quest. In this RPG, a straightforward yet captivating example emerges in the second chapter: to access the mysterious cemetery, we must confront a guardian demon, which is represented as a statue blocking our way. To bring it to life and convince it to allow us passage, we need to locate its head, which is hidden in the museum of a nearby town.
Retrieving this head isn’t straightforward; we must first shatter the bracket that holds it in place. To accomplish this, we require acid blood from zombies lurking in the cemetery, which we can collect in a vial that has to be purchased from another town. This intricate web of tasks showcases the depth of the game. And believe it or not, this is considered the EASIEST PUZZLE in the entire game. At times, progressing through the story becomes nearly impossible without having the right character in your party or an essential item that you might have overlooked 15 hours ago, adding an extra layer of challenge and excitement to the adventure.
Balance of complexity and complexity
Septerra Core is undoubtedly a memorable game. Even back then, with my limited background in video games, especially JRPGs, I could see how broken and uneven it was.
The primary issue, perhaps the most glaring, lies in the game’s pacing. In battles, even a single action gauge fills up at an agonizingly slow rate, and if players opt for a powerful three-gauge skill, they might as well brew a cup of tea while waiting. This discourages you from including characters with low speed stats in your party, as it becomes a tedious ordeal that drains the fun out of combat.
The animations only add to this frustration; they are not only sluggish but also overly intricate and cannot be skipped. For instance, when you command your swordsman, Korgan, to execute his strongest attack, he dramatically raises his arms to the sky, gathers energy as if summoning the forces of nature, then returns to a battle stance. He leaps toward the enemy, delivers three strikes with flair, jumps back dramatically, and finally resumes his stance, all while you sit there wishing it would just speed up. This drawn-out process can make encounters feel unnecessarily prolonged, pulling you out of the immersive experience the game tries to create.
About ten seconds went by. And this happened with EVERY SINGLE ATTACK. It was painful back then, and it feels especially excruciating now, after experiencing the mechanics of FF7 and even FF8, not to mention the newer titles in the genre that have set a higher standard. Personally, during my replay, I found myself forming a team with ranged weaponsābecause they have the quickest animations, which felt crucial in this slow-paced environment.
With every turn, these relentless foes creep closer to our party, making every moment tense. Relentlessly and at an agonizingly slow pace. Very. Slowly. This is made worse by the vast size of the local dungeons. Theyāre absolutely enormous and often resemble intricate mazes filled with levers, keys, and ridiculously convoluted backtracking that tests your patience. Yes, unlike many games in this genre, we can see enemies on the map and attempt to bypass them. However, this means sacrificing precious experience points, and the enemies are positioned in such a way that we can barely avoid even a fifth of them, forcing us to engage in battles weād rather skip.
An expedition into the later dungeons can stretch to about three hours, and god forbid you havenāt stocked up on potionsāreturning through respawning enemies between locations can lead to an incredibly frustrating “softlock.” The foes you encounter are almost always hostile, dangerous, and incredibly resilient, making the battles feel painfully prolonged. However, the balance is oddly skewed; you might struggle intensely through one chapter, only to breeze through the next one, effortlessly scattering enemies left and right as if they were mere obstacles. (The developer shared in their blog that this issue arose from playtesting conducted right before the gameās release, during which each tester received a specific section of the game with their own character build and equipment tailored for that part.) Now, having reached the gameās midpoint, the exhausted player is desperate to find a quicker escape from the suffocating, oppressive dungeon and begins to explore the alluring power of magic as a means to break free. There comes a point when the game starts to frankly stall. Instead of protracted, intense fights with endless waves of enemies, we simply start methodically combining cards, summon a powerful creature – and with a single spell sweep away an entire group of opponents from the battlefield. Then this algorithm is repeated over and over again. Already by the middle of the passage, ordinary battles with ordinary enemies turn into a soulless conveyor: entered the battle, performed a summoning, drained mana – and in a circle. Everything happens faster, yes, but the very essence of the battles loses its drive, becomes monotonous and emasculated. However, against this background, encounters with local bosses stand out especially brightly – this is a real breath of fresh air. Here, brute force alone will not do: a thoughtful approach and strategy are needed. There are classic bosses, where it is important to skillfully manage resources, accurately calculate timing and know the capabilities of your character well. And there are also non-standard ones – bosses-riddles, the victory over which requires the activation of hidden mechanisms or the solution of logical problems before the start of the battle. For example, to eliminate an experienced mercenary, you will have to cleverly place a box with explosives in the arena and lure the enemy into a trap.
One thing I really donāt want to overthink is the local story puzzles. Back in 1999, I was constantly haunted by a single thought: “where on earth do I go next?” Fast forward to 2022, and that thought still lingers in my mind, but this time I have the incredible power of anime and the vast resources of the internet, complete with guides, to help me navigate my way. By the middle of the game, weāve gathered more than a dozen quest items, always trying to combine them with each other, with levers, and even with random NPCs just to move the plot forward and make any sense of it all. Sometimes, there are hints about whatās expected from you, though they donāt always provide the clarity you need, and in other areas, thereās not even a whisper of guidance. Just imagine what it feels like to search every inch of the map, going back into those enormous dungeons again and again to find a missed item or lever during the “pre-internet” days, when solutions werenāt just a click away. When we finally acquire a flying ship, things start to ease up a bit, at least on one front, allowing for some much-needed exploration and adventure.
Now we can zip between locations and skip pointless battles, right? Not exactly! Pixel hunting has reached a truly PLANETARY level. While we once solved puzzles within a single layer, now their answers can be scattered all over the vast game world. You have a shipāsoar and explore! Thatās how my journey came to an end back then; I found myself hopelessly lost in the winding alleys of the World Bazaar, completely unsure of where to go next. After a couple of days of aimless wandering, I eventually shelved the game in frustration. Then I stumbled upon Final Fantasy 7/8, and everything changed for me, opening up a whole new world of adventure and storytelling.
Conclusion
Despite all these horrors, I still cherish a deep fondness for this game, which compelled me to revisit it this year and finally resolve my feelings about it. As clichĆ©d as it may sound, Septerra Core is truly a labor of love from a small team of just 25 dedicated individuals who sought to craft a grand and epic adventureāand they largely succeeded in their ambitious vision. The game immerses players in a vast and distinctive world where magic, technology, and bioengineering intricately intertwine. It features vibrant character designs and plot twists that may seem typical by todayās standards but were genuinely astonishing and fresh back then, making a lasting impression on players. One of the lead developers shared a wealth of intriguing insights on his blog, candidly acknowledging his missteps and reflecting on the development process. He admitted that the game could have been completed more swiftly, which is fascinating considering that combat was significantly faster in the early alpha version. Surprisingly, it actually slowed down in the pre-release version compared to the final product! He also recognized that the decision to expand the dungeons was made late in development, a choice he now considers a mistake. These reflections give insights into the challenges faced by small teams striving to create something impactful.
The game encountered classic challenges with its publisher, who was embroiled in a court battle over tax issues while simultaneously pressuring the developers to deliver. Still, I hold a deep sense of gratitude for this game, as it marked my first encounter with the genre and evokes a treasure trove of fond memories. Whether this nostalgia stems from the game itself or simply the warmth of holiday feelings is perhaps less significant in the grand scheme of things.
