The action takes place on the isolated island of Bagne de Cayenne, where a truly terrifying television experiment has unfolded in the near future. The largest media company TEC1 decided to reboot the reality show format — and did it radically. Instead of dull studio games, viewers now watch real deathmatches for survival, where the stakes are life and freedom.

A giant prison was built on the island, and the island itself was turned into an arena for a bloody show called “Bagne de Cayenne”. The participants are prisoners who will not just have to survive, but go through hell, fighting with the same doomed ones like themselves. Every prisoner is fitted with a neural implant that tracks their location in real time. It is impossible to escape from this island.

But just hiding and waiting is a bad strategy. In addition to staying alive, the participants must win the attention of the public and gain popularity. The higher the rating, the higher the chance of getting outside help:

It’s worth taking a closer look at what really sets this survival game apart from the rest. The authors have done a great job: in Scum, the character doesn’t just get tired from running or wearing a heavy backpack — they pay attention to many small but important details.

• Hygiene and toilet – yes, even this will have to be taken care of;
• Recovery – after injuries, it takes time to fully heal.

This is not just survival, but a real life simulator. At the same time, no one prevents you from fishing or hunting – everything to feel like a part of this harsh but exciting world. Physics is also well-developed. The flight of a bullet depends on wind, humidity, friction and gravity. So just pressing the trigger is not enough – you will have to take into account dozens of nuances, like in real shooting.

Danger lurks not only from other players. As soon as you go deep into the forest, escaping from pursuit, you can stumble upon a bear – and here are new, much more serious problems. The goal is simple – to survive as long as possible, and there are plenty of ways to do this. No templates, everyone plays as they want. You can hide in the forest and watch others from afar through a sniper scope. Or you can act head-on, or team up with others and conduct coordinated attacks – team play really decides here.

Unlike other games of the genre, where you immediately get a huge world at your disposal, here you are given a real sense of freedom. Don’t want to shoot? Live by the river, fish, dry wet clothes, make a fire, build yourself a shelter. But be careful: if the character gets injured, you won’t get away with just a first aid kit. Restoring health here is a process that requires time and caution. You will have to lie low, hide, avoid conflicts. Just like real life — survival here is a marathon, not a sprint.
