Risk of Rain

Risk of Rain

“Predictably, summer’s here, bringing scorching heat and almost zero chance of rain. So, to escape the sun’s relentless glare, why not immerse yourself in today’s game review: Risk of Rain?

Risk of Rain is a captivating 2D roguelike, lovingly developed by Hopoo Games way back in 2013. Chucklefish took on publishing duties, and you can find this gem on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and Xbox One.

The game proved to be a resounding success, paving the way for a sequel in 2019. This time around, they boldly ventured into the realm of 3D with Risk of Rain 2 (though, let’s be honest, Risk of Rain 3D might have been a more straightforward title, but the era of slapping ‘3D’ on everything is definitely behind us).”

As usual, let’s start with the introduction. The story, it would seem, is nothing special: a transport ship loaded with unusual, almost anomalous cargo, crashes and crashes into an unknown planet shrouded in mystery. You get the role of the only one who managed to survive. The task is simple in words, but not in essence: find a way back to the stuck ship and activate teleportation to escape from this stone hell cut off from civilization. All this madness began because of one creature – a mysterious and all-powerful entity called the Seer. He commands the monsters of this planet and, in fact, is the source of all troubles. This is how, without embellishment, the essence of what is happening looks.

Items, money, teleports

Let’s dive into the heart of the matter – the gameplay. Imagine a richly colored 2D roguelike adventure where each hero is not just a character, but a unique bearer of style, character and approach to battle. By choosing your adventurer, you will embark on a challenging and unpredictable adventure through six stages, each of which is generated randomly. Teleports will become your lifelines, allowing you to overcome the distances between stages and eventually reach your goal – your home spaceship.

What makes each playthrough truly fresh is the double set of possible biomes for each level, with the exception of the final one. Each of the biomes has its own atmosphere, visual style and tactical features. Moreover, each of them exists in three different generation schemes, which virtually eliminates the repetition of maps between sessions. And on the fifth level, you will face a serious dilemma: rush into the final battle or return to previously completed levels to gain strength and strengthen your tactics.

Risk of Rain battle

In this dangerous world, money becomes the most valuable resource. With its help, you can open locked containers with loot, buy powerful artifacts, hire useful drones or make offerings to mysterious statues hiding valuable rewards. Speaking of drones: they are varied – from assault models that provide cover fire, to medics that can get you out of trouble, and heavy flamethrowers that burn everything around. The statues are also not simple: one requires gold, and the other two – a part of your health, exchanging sacrifice for strength. And do not forget about the capsules hidden in the environment – free but tempting containers that can bring both coins and powerful active items that can change the outcome of the battle in your favor.

You’ll find a solid range of items in the game, categorized as passive and active – stack passives galore, but only one active, naturally. They also come in different qualities, adding to the fun. Unlocking most items requires completing quests (more on those shortly).

Honestly, assembling an incredibly overpowered combo feels a little too easy, and I think that’s a genuine issue with the game’s balance.

Opponents and their types

It is not surprising that the game is filled with standard opponents, as well as episodes with truly difficult battles against bosses. An interesting moment is that one of the bosses appears immediately after activating the teleporter. The teleporter itself launches a temporary survival test: you need to stay afloat until the timer runs out. As soon as the countdown ends, the endless stream of enemies stops, and the path to the next stage opens. Fortunately, the developers tried to add variety: opponents and bosses are presented in sufficient numbers so that the process does not get boring. Moreover, enemies can appear in enhanced versions – for example, causing damage upon touching or suddenly moving behind the player. Bosses also have improved versions – some become invisible or receive serious increases in health and damage. You can study all the interesting details in more detail at the specified link.

Take a risk, fall, start over

Being a roguelike, prepare for a revolving door of deaths and a delightful deluge of new items. A typical run should last 20-40 minutes, but my insatiable need to explore every nook and cranny meant my runs often ballooned to 100+ minutes! Sadly, there’s no persistent character progression to sink your teeth into, but aside from the ever-important cash, you do get a character level system. It’s a bit of a letdown, though, as leveling merely buffs your damage and HP – no exciting new abilities or perks to unlock, sadly.”

Risk of Rain defeat

“Before plunging into another run, you get to hand-pick your character, dial in the difficulty, and snag an artifact. The chosen difficulty directly impacts the money flow, enemy density, and a rather interesting timer mechanic. Now, this timer isn’t a strict countdown to doom; instead, the longer you linger in a run, the more relentless the enemy spawns become (and if you dawdle for too long, prepare for some seriously unwelcome boss encounters!).

The game boasts numerous quests; most unlock cool new items, the rest, fresh characters to play. Some are general tasks, others a specific character’s unique duty.

Beyond quests, you gather enemy/boss intel—defeat many of one type for a slight chance to discover their data log entry.

Artifacts

The game’s core isn’t terribly hard, but artifacts really mess with that. Think of them as tricky modifiers, mostly working against players by bending the rules in annoying ways. First, you’ve gotta actually find the darn things, which is a major pain, honestly. Ten different areas, ten artifacts total, with only one hidden per zone, but remember those varied level spawns? Each spot has three potential layouts, YET only ONE of them holds the artifact you’re desperately seeking, ugh, it’s so frustrating. You might spend a solid hour searching, finally stumble upon the right location, only to discover it’s the wrong layout, the one without the artifact. Seriously?!

Risk of Rain game Artifacts

To actually snag those coveted artifacts, there’s always a small trial to overcome: maybe a precise jump, frantically hitting all the right buttons in sequence, or cleverly reaching some hidden, out-of-the-way place.

All characters

Okay, I saved the best for last: characters! Here is a motley dozen of heroes, each with a distinct playstyle and special abilities. I am sure that among them you will definitely find someone who will suit your taste.

Each fighter has four unique abilities in their arsenal. The first is the main attack: simple but reliable, works in any skirmish. The second is an enhanced version of this attack, when you need to deal more damage. The third is where it gets more interesting: most often, this is a skill that strengthens the hero himself or, conversely, hinders the enemy – be it weakening or control. This is where the tactical game begins. Well, the fourth is the signature trump card, the very same ultimate ability, capable of completely changing the outcome of the battle. (Oh, by the way, I borrowed the images of the heroes from the English wiki – so you can be sure that everything is official).

Risk of Rain characters

Let’s start with the Commando – he’s like a Swiss Army knife: a versatile, reliable shooter, a great entry point for beginners. It’s easy to learn, but mastering him is an art in itself.

Next up is the Enforcer. He’s a real tank: not only does he shoot accurately, but he also hides behind a shield, using grenades for crowd control. A real bastion of defense and intimidation.

The Bandit is a different story. He relies on speed and maneuverability, a master of short, lightning-fast attacks. Strike, retreat, disappear – his motto.

But the Huntress prefers to keep her distance. Her bow and arrows turn combat into a dance: graceful, precise and deadly. She is a specialist in long-range damage and evasion from danger.

Of course, it would take a lot of time to analyze each of the twelve in detail – so if you want to dive deeper into the mechanics and biographies of these heroes, I recommend checking out the Steam page or the wiki (links above). There you will find a sea of details and, perhaps, your future favorite.

Good soundtrack and more

Alright, here’s the expanded version, aiming for that extra depth and personality within the increased character limit:

“The game’s soundtrack is a genuine highlight, offering impressive variety and perfectly capturing the game’s atmosphere. Chris Christodoulou masterfully composed and performed every track in a brilliant, nostalgic 8-bit style – a perfect complement to the pixelated visuals! It’s the kind of soundtrack that gets stuck in your head in the best way. You can check out the album itself here: [link to album]. Seriously, give it a listen!

The controls feel remarkably comfortable and intuitive, making the game a joy to play (especially if you’re rocking a controller). The responsiveness is spot-on, and the button mapping feels natural.

The difficulty initially leans toward the easier side; my early deaths were really my only significant struggles. However, the cleverly designed artifact system changes everything, genuinely upping the challenge and adding layers of strategic depth. Experimenting with different artifact combinations is a blast!

Completionists can expect to sink roughly 60 hours into achieving a full 100% completion. There’s a lot of content packed in!

It’s a slight pity about the lack of Russian language support, though honestly, it’s hardly essential to fully appreciate the gameplay and story. On the bright side, the inclusion of both local and online multiplayer modes are fantastic additions, significantly boosting the game’s replayability and social aspect.

Final Verdict

This is a robust and highly enjoyable roguelike with a fantastic level of variety and the added bonus of engaging multiplayer. While overpowered combos are relatively easy to assemble, the well-balanced artifact system helps regulate that, preventing the game from becoming too trivial. I highly recommend trying out all the different characters and exploring the depth of the gameplay, or diving into a multiplayer session with friends; the game is genuinely good, surprisingly addictive, and definitely worth playing. You won’t regret it!

I’d give it an 8-9/10 (just to clarify for the score sticklers: x1-x2/10 isn’t a precise score, but rather a range – some games simply defy pinpoint accuracy and deserve a bit of leeway!).”
