Palworld

Palworld

When creating Palworld, the developers from Pocketpair did not reinvent the wheel. They simply collected all the best from popular survival simulators, added movement mechanics in the spirit of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and seasoned everything with their “non-Pokemon”. As a result, their mix literally blew up online on Steam – let’s figure out what worked.

As in any self-respecting survival simulator, our hero wakes up on a desert island. His equipment at the start is shabby underwear, and his only tools are his own hands. Immediately after waking up, the character demonstrates good dexterity: he can climb steep cliffs, but only until his stamina runs out. Over time, developing technology, he will be able to fly on a glider, use a grappling hook and launch entire automated resource production lines.

The main task is simple and eternal: collect resources, build a base, collect even more resources and improve the base. And so on – in ascending order: from primitive workbenches to modern laboratories, from clubs and bows to machine guns and rifles. The ultimate goal is to explore the world, prepare for battles with bosses and defeat them. However, getting to their towers scattered around the map will not be easy. What sets this game apart from most other games in the genre is the presence of Pals, charming creatures that directly resemble PokĆ©mon. The Pal design is, of course, just different enough that Nintendo cannot be accused of plagiarism, but the similarities are hard to miss.

To understand why Palworld is so attractive to players, it’s worth remembering why the whole world fell in love with PokĆ©mon. The magic of the Nintendo franchise is in the amazingly conveyed spirit of adventure. A schoolchild who caught his first PokĆ©mon sets off on a grand journey with his friends, dreaming of ā€œcatching them allā€ and ā€œbecoming the best.ā€ This simple but brilliant formula captured the hearts of millions of children around the world.

At the same time, Nintendo was well aware that if you want to hold the audience’s attention, you need to grow with them. So over time, dark notes began to be added to the world of PokĆ©mon – hints at child kidnapping, eating PokĆ©mon, and even afterlife themes. There is an entire article dedicated to this dark side of the franchise. Moreover, for the sake of the interests of the adult audience, the appearance of some PokĆ©mon was made anthropomorphic and, let’s say, provocatively attractive. And finally, a funny fact: in the real world, there really were cases when fans officially married PokĆ©mon…

Palworld: A Brutal Alternative to Pokemon on PC

The Pokemon franchise has long ceased to be just about battles and cute animals. The authors began to work more subtly with the world, paying attention to its bright side. For example, now some trainers have stopped perceiving their Pokemon exclusively as fighters. Instead of battles, they go on stage together and show their talents, demonstrating how closely the destinies of people and creatures can be intertwined. In new cities, caring for Pokemon comes first: even more medical centers and recreation areas are built for them than for people. The world is learning to live not in the “master and pet” mode, but as a single organism, where everyone takes care of the other. Slavery, which was once hidden behind beautiful battles in arenas, is gradually giving way to true symbiosis. In Palworld, there is almost no talk of harmony. Here, the relationship between people and pals is more reminiscent of a cold conquest. As soon as the player gets to the island, his first instinct is not to meet, but to capture: you throw a Pal-sphere at a wild Pal and impose your will on it. The captured animals become your workforce and army: they help in battles with other Pals, participate in battles with powerful bosses, carry you across lands and mountains, and fire creatures can even act as walking light bulbs in dark places.

Palworld A Brutal Alternative to Pokemon on PC

Each Pal is tied to one of the elements – water, fire, air, earth or electricity. It would seem that you can expect the classic “rock-paper-scissors” mechanics, like in Pokemon. But no: here the balance collapses with the introduction of firearms. Yes, you can just hand your cute friend a machine gun and send him into battle. It’s fun, but it completely kills the tactical component of elemental confrontations. In addition, Palworld does not have the usual Pokemon evolution system. There is no sense of growth and progress when your little partner turns into a majestic titan. True, bosses are still improved versions of regular pals. For example, Penking is a giant and strengthened version of the little ice penguin that can be encountered in the early stages.

But even if the pal is not needed for battles, it will not remain idle. It can always be sent to work: at the base, the animals extract resources, grow crops, create weapons, brew potions and take care of food. Less intelligent ones do simpler tasks like producing wool and eggs for clothing and food. And all this is part of a huge automated base that the player builds with his own hands, turning cute assistants into a real driving force of the economy. Later, the ability to breed pals opens up. Their offspring automatically merges into the production machine: children work side by side with their parents. However, Palworld gives the player more cruel options: you can create a cleaver with which to “process” weak pals, disassembling them for resources or even … cooking them into food. Yes, it sounds crazy. But that’s what makes the game so appealing: its brutal, yet oddly logical version of a world where survival is more important than emotion.

One of the main advantages of Palworld was its availability on PC. For a huge number of players, this was a real salvation: after all, Nintendo had long limited access to Pokemon only through its consoles. And here, finally, there was an opportunity to get an experience similar to “Pokemon” – only in a tougher, more honest and daring version. And that’s not all. Despite the early access, Palworld is already showing enviable stability. The game is well optimized, especially in comparison with the failed releases of Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, which suffered from lags, bugs and simply monstrous graphics.

RimWorld Anomaly

Moving around the world of Palworld is pleasant and convenient. Your character runs quickly, jumps deftly, and as you level up, it becomes even more agile. The teleport system is thought out competently: the desired point can be reached without tedious runs across half the map. It is especially nice that the developers thought about the convenience of searching for resources: important items are highlighted from afar, so you will not miss anything valuable. If you prefer solo survival – no problem. You can calmly build your base, fight bosses, arrange your farm without the risk of running into hostile players. However, multiplayer is also implemented here: you can unite in guilds, explore the world together and organize real raids.

And the greatest potential of Palworld, without a doubt, lies in mods. Mods are already appearing where pals are replaced with classic PokĆ©mon (although Nintendo tries to quickly block them). But this is just the tip of the iceberg. A huge layer of fandom is associated with 18+ themes – erotic content based on PokĆ©mon is incredibly popular, ahead of even Overwatch and Genshin Impact. If the developers of Palworld allow fans to create such mods without strict restrictions, the game can explode the market and gain cult status.

Ultimately, Palworld is a world that is strange, brutal, funny, and terrifyingly compelling all at once. And for those who have long been looking for an alternative to classic PokĆ©mon, but wanted something “hotter,” this is a real treasure.

Best Pokemon Game on PC – Palworld

Palworld itself is not particularly surprising – the developers simply collected familiar mechanics from popular games in one place and added an atmosphere inspired by Pokemon. The result is a completely ordinary survival game with catching animals and forcing them to work for your benefit. Even after a full release and with dozens of mods, you should hardly expect anything outstanding – the project will most likely remain the same as we see it now.

But if you want a truly interesting single-player game about taming creatures on PC, you should pay attention to Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. This game offers:

  • a gripping and touching story;
  • bright and charismatic characters;
  • dynamic battles between creatures and their masters;
  • a unique fictional language of the world;
  • great music and atmosphere;
  • animation in the style of Hayao Miyazaki.

And a nice bonus – the game can be officially purchased in the Russian Steam.
