Ori and the Blind Forest is an atmospheric game released in 2015 and created by the Austrian studio Moon Studios. Since then, it has deservedly received the status of one of the best metroidvanias of its time. It is often put on par with such titans of the genre as Hollow Knight or Bloodstained. The project turned out to be so successful that the developers soon released a sequel – Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I haven’t gotten around to a full review of the second part yet, I just tried it a little, but maybe one day I’ll share my impressions about it. And in 2024, the studio presented a new game – No Rest for the Wicked, an isometric Souls-like, which you can already try in early access.

Resembling a nimble squirrel, it ends up in an unfamiliar world until it is found and saved from bad weather by a mysterious, bear-like creature. Instead of returning to the tree, Ori stays with his new friend – they live a simple, warm life, full of walks, searches for fruits and sincere joy. But cloudless days quickly give way to disaster: darkness hangs over the forest, and Ori is forced to set off on a dangerous journey to save his home.

The entire introduction takes only a couple of minutes, but during this time you manage to go through a flurry of emotions – from a smile to real tears. The characters are amazingly expressive: they don’t speak, but tell everything with gestures, movements, and a look. The animation is so lively and subtle that the characters seem real. The graphics are at the level of animated films like Pixar: every scene is worked out to the smallest detail, the movements are smooth, the visual style is mesmerizing.

Another important point: there is not a single loading screen in the game. The entire space is a single world through which you can travel without stopping. From the very beginning – from the menu – the camera smoothly flows into the splash screen, from there – straight into the gameplay. There will be no loading during cutscenes, or upon death, or when moving around the world. Everything works instantly – as if you were just living in this forest.

The plot is presented very subtly – like a dotted line. Ori has a goal: to complete important tasks in different corners of the forest – to open ancient locks, melt ice, cleanse contaminated water. Along the way, he will dodge a bird of prey – the embodiment of evil – and get closer to a lonely four-legged spider, which at first you are afraid of, and then begin to understand. Everything else is a journey through a magical, open world, which you want to go through not for the sake of the finish, but for the sake of the journey itself.

At the very beginning of Ori and the Blind Forest, the main character, a tiny glowing animal, can do almost nothing. His jump is short and awkward, and the path forward seems impassable. But soon Ori is joined by a small flying companion, who helps attack enemies and explains what is going on. After a short introduction, you are released to free sail – to explore a huge, beautiful and full of mysteries world.

If you have not encountered the concept of “metroidvania” before, now is the time to get acquainted. This is a genre where the game world is revealed gradually – as the character gains new abilities. It is safe to say that an experienced platformer player will not find anything radically new here. Yes, some ideas have already been encountered somewhere. But the point is not in reinventing the wheel, but in how cool this wheel was assembled. The game is polished to a shine: the controls are responsive, Ori moves quickly and accurately, playing is a pleasure.

A companion-fire, circling near the hero, attacks enemies in a limited radius, so you have to stay close, but not take unnecessary risks. The enemies you encounter are very different – from angry birds to strange slugs. And some, like green balls that roll and explode, become part of puzzles.

Defeated enemies leave behind experience that can be spent on small improvements: discover secrets on the map, strengthen your defense, and so on. New abilities are unlocked strictly according to the plot – a classic of the genre.

One of the unique features of the game is the save system. Here you choose where to set a checkpoint, spending a little mana on it. This is convenient and at the same time risky: forget to save – and 30 minutes of progress are wasted. But if you do everything correctly, such a point can be used several times.

And finally, the main difference of Ori and the Blind Forest is the difficulty. Some moments will have to be played dozens of times, especially closer to the end. There are scenes where you need to perform a long chain of actions without errors without the ability to save. Battles become a real test, and the final stage requires almost two minutes of flawless play. Difficulty level is a subjective thing, but it feels more challenging here than, say, Rayman Legends.

Is Ori and the Blind Forest Worth Playing: Pros and Cons

There is no need to talk about this game for long. It does not pretend to be a large-scale epic or a brilliant plot with dozens of twists. The story here is simple, almost fairy-tale-like: it could easily fit into five short videos. The gameplay is a classic platformer with elements of Metroidvania, which we have already seen many. But despite all the familiarity, Ori and the Blind Forest is able to surprise. And not with external tricks, but with how subtly and beautifully everything is done.

This is one of those games that do not try to be something more than they are. It does not want to shock the player, it just tells its story – sincerely, with soul, with love for detail. Simplicity here is not a disadvantage, but an advantage. Because behind this external ease lies the incredibly deep work of artists, composers and designers. Here, every scene is like a picture, every note is like an emotion, and every jump on platforms is part of a large, integral adventure.

Music is a separate conversation. It doesn’t just accompany what’s happening, it literally leads you along. Sometimes it seems that the melodies are guiding you through the plot, telling you where there is joy, where there is anxiety, and where there is a moment to hold your breath. All together it creates an atmosphere of real magic – the kind that can only be felt in childhood or in especially rare games.

The gameplay – yes, it is familiar, but honed to perfection. The controls are responsive, the progress feels pleasant: you literally feel how you become stronger, more agile, more confident. And at some point you realize that you can’t tear yourself away – for the third hour in a row.

The plot is simple, but sincere. It is not overloaded with unnecessary details and does not try to be “deeper than necessary.” This is a story about loss, hope, friendship and the way home. A story that you understand with your heart.
