Well, pour yourself something tasty, get comfortable – we begin the analysis of NBA 2K22.

The first thing that really catches your eye in the new NBA 2K is the visuals and how smoothly everything works. It might seem like a small thing, but the color palette has become much more pleasing to the eye: now basketball players don’t look like gloomy giants, gloomily throwing the ball into the hoop. And on PS5, the detailing of faces is simply beyond the pale. At some point, you forget that this is a game — the facial expressions, the behavior of the players, the lighting on the court convey the atmosphere of a live match. You can turn on the game against bots and just watch: at first glance, you can’t tell that this is not a real broadcast.

Such a noticeable leap in realism was made possible by a couple of key changes in the gameplay — a redesigned defense and throwing system. If in the previous version, trying to get into the basket sometimes turned into a mockery, requiring two precise clicks at the right moment on the scale (and even then without guarantees), now everything is much fairer. The developers heard the feedback and returned the familiar mechanics: fill the scale – throw. But they added an interesting feature – fatigue now really affects the result.

If before you could endlessly spam feints and accelerations without consequences, as if you were Usain Bolt in basketballs, now – forget it. A separate indicator of current stamina appeared, and it directly affects the effectiveness of actions. Overdo it with activity – you will get the ball lost, misses, mistakes in defense. This slowed down the pace of matches and forces you to approach the game wisely, calculate your strength and not throw it around left and right. And this applies to both attackers and defenders: under hard pressure, it is easy to burn out and just stop – and then the road to the ring is open for the opponent.

In general, the updated gameplay feels fresh and interesting. But there are some nuances – the balance has slightly shifted towards long-range players. So much so that many online players prefer to abandon drives and dunks in favor of three-pointers. The approach to the hoop has become too labor-intensive, and most simply play for accuracy from a distance. It turned out a bit ironic: the developers wanted to make the game deeper and more complex – and they did, but players quickly found a loophole and are using it en masse. Until a serious patch comes out, you shouldn’t count on beautiful attacks “under the hoop”. So if you are a fan of this kind of game – get ready for the fact that now you will have to put up with a constant “+3” in the face from an opponent who is not particularly interested in spectacle.

What’s New in NBA 2K22’s MyCareer Mode

One of the most noticeable changes in the new part is the My Career mode, which again offers you to create your own basketball player and lead him from a no-name to a superstar. Scan your face or choose from ready-made templates, distribute the characteristic points – and go to the draft. This time, without cinematic ambitions in the spirit of Spike Lee: the plot is extremely simple. We have a promising guy with a difficult fate, who is trying to get to the top. Something like a budget version of Alex Hunter from FIFA. It is difficult to take sports dramas seriously anymore – the “fall-rose-won” template has outlived its usefulness, and no one even tries bold plot twists.

But let’s be honest: we are not here for the sake of the story. The main novelty is a full-fledged online city with real players. 2K created a kind of hub where you can walk the streets, complete quests, chat with other players, buy clothes in stores and train in a separate gym. If you want street basketball, go to the court. This is not GTA V, of course – more like a browser MMO with a basketball twist – but at least it’s more interesting than endlessly clicking through menu items.

Sounds cool? On paper – yes. But in reality, this city quickly turns into a routine. To watch a cutscene or do a short workout, you have to run back and forth along the virtual streets. Fast travel works clumsily, and a skateboard instead of transport does not really save the situation. There is one more nuance: if you want live communication and partners in matches, it is better to play on American time. Basketball is still the number one game in the USA, and that is where most of the players are concentrated. And in Europe, the city often seems deserted: finding partners even for a simple 3 on 3 format can be difficult.

NBA 2K22: Pros, Cons, and Who This Game Is For

NBA 2K22 is a good game, but hardly anyone would call it a breakthrough. If you compare it with previous parts, it becomes clear: the transition to a new generation of consoles has affected, first of all, the visuals and performance. The picture has become noticeably sharper, animations are smoother, loading times are shorter. But if you dig deeper, the game mechanics remain about the same. Every year, the developers announce the reworking of shots, passes and movements, but the player is unlikely to feel any global changes.

The MyTeam mode, where you assemble a team from cards, continues to be the main magnet for fans. There is really more content there – new players, variable packs, in-game events. There is an opportunity to earn cards through honest work – through drafts, mini-tournaments and challenges. For example, you can assemble a squad and play an online series of matches or take part in a slam dunk competition. The problem is that all this requires a lot of time and effort, and the final reward often does not pay off the spent nerves. But if you invest money, you get a top team much faster.

• A wide selection of cards and unique players;
• Various modes: draft, mini-tournaments, challenges;
• Visually and technically, everything looks decent.

Cons:

• Donations still provide a tangible advantage;
• Free rewards are often not worth the time spent;
• The balance between “playing for fun” and “playing for the result” has not yet been found.

Fans have been asking for variety for years now: adding the Euroleague, national teams, fresh licenses. But instead, the developers are once again pushing Dream Team in different variations. Women’s teams? They were removed altogether, despite the fact that a few years ago the game at least had European teams. Apparently, commercial interest turned out to be higher than fan demand – regional sales did not grow, and they decided not to bother with licenses.

As for the WNBA, everything is sad here. Women’s basketball in NBA 2K feels more like a gesture of goodwill or a marketing ploy than a full-fledged part of the game. Yes, there are teams, but there is no active community around them. Finding an online match is almost impossible, and the use of female characters in most modes is severely limited. This is unlikely to change until 2K has real motivation to develop this direction.

The key problem of NBA 2K22 is the same as most sports simulators: annual releases. The studio simply does not have time to implement truly major innovations. As a result, a good, even high-quality game comes out, but with a minimum of differences from last year. But without competitors – there is simply no alternative on the market. This is why the series remains afloat: it is still the best, but only because there are simply no others. NBA 2K22 can be recommended to two categories of players: ardent basketball fans who buy every part for the sake of their favorite franchise, and owners of new consoles, where at least a beautiful picture with an honest 60 FPS is available. Everyone else should think twice. You can play the previous versions, the pleasure will be almost the same, and you will spend less money.
