NBA 2K21

The NBA 2K series has been around for almost two decades and has long earned a reputation as the best basketball simulator. This is perhaps one of the few sports titles where developers try not just to “refresh” the game from year to year, but actually add something new. While in FIFA and NHL we mostly see improved graphics, bug fixes and updated rosters, the 2K team often rolls out full-fledged game modes and fresh mechanics that change the feel of the gameplay.
NBA 2K21 is just such a case. On the one hand, the game continued the tradition of innovation, but for me it was primarily a chance for the developers to improve. Remember how loudly NBA 2K20 was criticized: then the multiplayer mode turned out to be almost unusable without donations – and it is this that most often makes you buy the game. The criticism was not unfounded.
It was almost impossible to assemble a dream team in NBA 2K20 without investing, and at the same time, 2K also managed to fail their WWE simulator series. Then, however, they quickly admitted their mistakes, announced a break and promised to return with something fresh by the end of 2021. So, did NBA 2K21 manage to regain the trust of fans and rehabilitate the studio after two high-profile fiascos? Let’s figure it out.

One of the most noticeable changes in NBA 2K21 was the redesigned shooting system. Although it can be called a novelty with a stretch – in fact, the developers brought back the Pro Stick mechanics from NBA 2K17, but now it feels much more developed and polished.
If before, to shoot, it was enough to simply press the button and, in fact, only control the accuracy, now everything has become much more interesting – and, at the same time, more complicated. In the new system, it is important not only to press on time, but also to correctly direct the stick: the trajectory of the ball depends on the angle, and to hit the ball, you need to aim literally at the center of the basket. This adds realism and depth, but at first it can be confusing. Don’t be scared – 10-15 minutes in training mode is enough to get used to it and start hitting consistently. Having looked at the reviews on the forums and on Steam, you can see that it was the new shooting system that caused the most negativity. It is actively criticized, but mostly by beginners or those who have only played last year’s version. For them, the abrupt transition may indeed seem inconvenient.
But if you approach it with patience, it becomes clear: Pro Stick is a step forward. It makes the game more conscious and requires the player to concentrate at every moment. This is especially noticeable in isolation or with tight defense – when each throw can decide the outcome of the episode, the mechanics are revealed to the fullest. Here, not only timing is important, but also fine motor skills – and this is the main thrill.
Of the minuses, it is worth noting the visual part. Despite the internal changes in the mechanics, the animations have remained almost the same. That is, the throws may feel different, but they look the same as in the previous parts. The characters do not demonstrate new movements, and at first glance you will not notice that the system has become more complex and deeper. However, let’s be honest – in the midst of a match, you do not always pay attention to such details. Overall, the new shooting system isn’t about spectacle, it’s about feeling in control. It may be a turn-off for inexperienced players, but for fans of the series and those who enjoy basketball, it’s likely to be a boon.

NBA 2K21 Story Mode: Is MyCAREER Worth Playing?
The NBA 2K series has long had three key modes: MyCAREER, MyTEAM and MyLEAGUE. Of course, no one has canceled the classic quick matches – you can just turn on the game and fight with a friend on one screen. Usually, the developers try to improve all the main modes every year, but in NBA 2K21 they seem to have decided to leave MyLEAGUE unchanged. So there is no point in dwelling on it in detail – it remains the same as we know it. But the career mode this year really deserves attention.
Let’s start from the very beginning. In MyCAREER this time you will find a fascinating story – you play as the son of a former sports star. It all starts with street matches in the yard, continues with school games, and then – the fight for a place on the college team and, of course, for a chance to get into the NBA. It may not sound particularly original — something similar was, for example, in FIFA — but thanks to high-quality cutscenes and lively dialogues with the father and other characters, the plot really draws you in. You immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a basketball dream and begin to truly worry about your player.
You will experience the following stages of character development:
- street games with friends in your home neighborhood;
- school games where the first scouting interest is formed;
- intense games in college with NCAA teams;
- participation in the draft and the path to a career in the NBA.
The college stage was especially pleasing. It unexpectedly turned out to be even more interesting than the NBA itself. All because the developers finally added licensed NCAA courts and teams. Previously, college basketball was ignored, but now this layer of the game is fully revealed – with an atmosphere, unique dynamics and a competitive spirit. This is what makes a career in NBA 2K21 especially memorable.
MyTEAM in NBA 2K25 – Team Building, Challenges, and a $250,000 Tournament
Once you’ve mastered the MyCAREER mode and gotten used to the updated shooting system, it’s time to take a look at the main mode of NBA 2K – MyTEAM. This is where the real collecting fever awaits you: you can assemble a dream team of current NBA stars and legendary players of past years. Of course, you can’t do without buying packs (where would we be without them), but there are also alternatives – daily tasks, participation in challenges, trading at auction. In the previous version of the game, it was almost impossible to assemble a top team without investments, but this year the developers listened to criticism and made the gameplay more friendly for those who play without donations.
Now MyTEAM has a seasonal progression system. If before everything revolved around collecting as many cards as possible, now the focus is on leveling up your level. Play matches, complete tasks – for each achievement you rise to a new level and receive rewards. These can be coins, boosters, rare player cards and other bonuses. The season lasts until you reach level 40. After that, the progress is reset, and a new season starts with completely different rewards.
The rest of the MyTEAM modes have remained familiar. In Domination, you will fight against current NBA squads, in Triple Threat (3 on 3) you will receive prizes for each victory, complete various challenges and, of course, strive to get into Unlimited to fight the best players on the planet for a chance to win $ 250,000.
And finally – a cool innovation in player cards. Now you can develop legends according to your own scenario. For example, with Dwyane Wade at level three, you yourself choose whether to focus on athleticism or defense. The athlete’s characteristics and playing style depend on your choice. This gives your team individuality – after all, now each player is not just a star, but part of your unique tactics.
Is NBA 2K21 Worth Buying? Pros and Cons Overview
Overall, NBA 2K21 can be considered a successful continuation of the series. The developers have added several cool features, and it is really interesting to play. But, as before, there is a fly in the ointment. One of the main flaws is the player ratings. They sometimes look like they were set at random. For example, Paul George, who is clearly not in the best shape this season, for some reason received as much as 90. But for athletes who are really burning it on the court, the ratings were somehow lowered. This looks especially strange if you compare current players with NBA legends – sometimes the difference is simply blatant. It is clear that due to the pandemic, the season was crumpled and it is more difficult to collect statistical data. But it was possible to at least get closer to reality, and not rely on chance. I really hope that this will be fixed in future patches.
As for the “Park” mode, it has long been asking for revision, but, alas, there is nothing new. The same old yard where players run aimlessly instead of playing. Matches start slowly, rating is not taken into account, so you can easily get to the pumped up guys and just fly out without a chance. All this makes the mode boring after an hour or two.
And of course, where would we be without an old friend – donations. Yes, this time the system has become a little friendlier: seasons have appeared in MyTEAM, more opportunities to get rare cards without investments, and the new throw mechanics make the game more dependent on skill than on numbers. But still – if you want to assemble a strong team quickly, be ready to get a card. 2K is not ready to completely abandon monetization yet.
What was good:
- Cool new throwing system – requires skill;
- Career now includes NCAA content and has become longer;
- MyTEAM has added seasons – it has become more interesting;
- Excellent graphics and animation, as always.
And what is not so good:
- Donations still affect progress;
- Park and MyLEAGUE modes have hardly developed;
- Some player ratings raise questions.
In the end, we can say that 2K has finally listened to the players – progress is evident. They added more content for solo players, worked on the gameplay, made the system for obtaining cards more honest. These changes already look cooler than anything that FIFA has done in recent years. But those who are just about to try the series for the first time should think: the new throwing mechanics may seem unusual and scare them off a little. But fans will definitely be satisfied – the game still holds its level.
