But instead, in NBA 2K19, the situation has only worsened. And this is especially disappointing, because the game really has many strong points in other respects.

Modern technologies are no longer growing at the same pace as before. It is simply impossible to make a revolutionary leap every year: engines do not have time to develop, and players do not really demand it. The audience, oddly enough, agrees with this. Moreover, he actively donates in microtransactions, which sometimes look almost absurd. After all, in essence, the game remains the same: the same sport, the same rules, a limited setting, almost identical gameplay. The developers had to look for new ways to maintain interest. When you can’t really pump up the graphics and physics, you have to play on other fields — for example, add a story.

In 2015, NBA 2K16 pleasantly surprised: for the first time in the series, there was not just a career mode, but a full-fledged drama with plot twists, acting and even direction from Spike Lee himself. For me personally, as a long-time fan of the genre, this was a breath of fresh air. Especially against the background of the total passion for online modes, which have never been particularly close to me.

The format went well. And soon others picked up the idea — FIFA 17 from EA got its own story mode. Here the player controlled not a faceless “avatar”, but a specific character – English striker Alex Hunter. Minimum customization, minimum freedom, but a full-fledged story, staged almost like a TV series. And, it must be said, successfully: EA continues to develop this line, invites celebrities, introduces new heroes, and all this has been going on for the third season in a row.

And almost every character on the hero’s path is not just an extra — they are alive, memorable and charismatic, as if from a good RPG or interactive film.

2K seems to have found that golden mean between a sports simulator and a dramatic story. Humor and tension, gameplay and narrative, conventions and realism — all of this organically merges, creating a fascinating journey from a nameless rookie to an NBA player. But let’s move away from the beloved story mode a little and look at the rest. The anniversary part (after all, the franchise is 20 years old!) pleases not only with tightened graphics, but also with updated physics. Contact wrestling now feels realistic — players no longer collide like soulless dolls, the ball does not stick to your hands and easily slips away if you do not work just a little. The ability to open up, set a competent screen and choose the right position has become more important than ever.

We also fixed something that used to irritate many people — strange collisions and collisions. Now the game feels smooth and logical. There are so many new animations that it’s pointless to even list them. This is already the level of decoration — beautiful movements, signature show-offs, reactions of the stands. And all this works for immersion. As for the AI ​​— attacking logic has always been 2K’s strong point, but now the defense has also improved. Players behave realistically: stars don’t make stupid mistakes, and bench players can make a mistake at the most inopportune moment — just like in real life. The presentation part has also been pumped up: now it’s a real TV broadcast with invited stars, bright shows and juicy replays. All this makes the match not just a game, but a full-fledged show.

It is worth noting not only the updated graphics and cosmetic changes in NBA 2K19 – what is much more interesting is that the developers have seriously reworked the in-game economy.
