The developers of NBA 2K have been moving in this direction for a long time, but in 2K18 they made a qualitative leap forward. Now MyCareer is more like a third-person action game with elements of the “open world”. No more endless menus — everything is available through free movement around the city. You walk around the area, go to the gym, look into the store, talk to other characters. Everything is like real players – almost like in life.

The beginning of MyCareer is made as a full-fledged interactive film: excellent work of the director, good music, funny moments. Character creation is integrated into the plot very organically: we approach the girl-registrar, she asks if we filled out the form sent by email. Having learned that we have not seen the letter, she gives us a tablet – and now the full customization of the appearance and game parameters of our character begins.

Further, we are waiting for a chain of events that refers to the classic plot about the rise from street playgrounds to large NBA arenas. The story is presented through short but bright cut scenes with good humor in the American style. All this helps to delve deeper into the journey of our hero – a journey that is now not just a set of matches, but a whole life story.

The Neighborhood in NBA 2K18 is not just a location in the game, but a full-fledged virtual party, where life is in full swing outside the basketball court. Here you can move freely, communicate with other players and, of course, play basketball the way you like. If you want, take part in quick 2v2 or 3v3 matches, and if you have more ambitions, gather a team of friends and go to the competitive Pro Am mode, where your opponents will be the same teams of real players.

To grow your character from 60 to the maximum 99 rating, you will have to sweat: regular training in the gym and daily training with the team are the key to success. Of course, you can just play NBA games and ignore off-court pumping, but then the path to the top will be long and not so exciting.

The MyGM mode, where you act as a head coach, deserves a special mention. For the first time, this mode has a story: your playing career ended due to a serious injury, and now you are back – already at the edge of the field, managing the team. True, the presentation leaves much to be desired – instead of live cutscenes and voice acting, like in MyCareer, there is only text and a little animation. It looks modest and in comparison with other modes – not very convincing. Let’s hope that the story will be improved in future versions.

Otherwise, NBA 2K18 is impressive: there is so much content that your eyes run wild. FIFA’s Ultimate Team-like online mode MyTeam returns with a pair of fresh modes, Pack and Playoffs and Super Max. In the former, you build a team draft-style, opening packs and choosing players and a coach from them. In the latter, you manage your squad on a budget, just like in a real NBA fantasy league. It’s really invigorating and adds tactical depth.

NBA 2K18 brought a lot of updates to the series, thanks to which the game began to feel even more alive and closer to real basketball. One of the main innovations was the redesigned movement system – now the guards do not look helpless, and the NBA stars really play in their signature style.
