Since Jay Z took over as producer of NBA 2K in 2012, the series has changed before our eyes — it has become richer, more interesting, and at the same time has not lost touch with reality. The rapper did not just add a great soundtrack to the game, he set a new standard: NBA 2K became not just a simulator, but a full-fledged show — with outstanding graphics, many modes, and the atmosphere of big basketball.

And despite the almost complete lack of competition — NBA Live has never recovered — the developers are not relaxing. Each new release continues to surprise, as if Jay Z is still standing behind the studio and making sure the game remains at its best.

NBA 2K16 tries to breathe life into the long-familiar and sometimes boring career and network modes. Before you start playing, you, as before, have to create your own player – after all, three key modes are built around your basketball alter ego. The most important of them – the career mode (My Career) – has received radical changes, and the main merit in this belongs to Spike Lee, the famous director, familiar to many from the films “Malcolm X” and “Inside Man – Not a Thief”. He came up with and shot a full-fledged drama about a guy who dreams of breaking into the NBA – and, of course, achieves it. And then the most interesting thing begins: money, fame and relatives who suddenly become too “close”. However, if you decide to create a fair-haired, blue-eyed basketball player, you may feel some dissonance: according to the plot, his family is African-American, and visually you will look like an outsider. Apparently, Spike Lee simply made a movie according to all his canons – and built it into the game.

It really feels like a movie. We see the life behind the scenes of the main character, his everyday life outside of matches and training – in the spirit of Fight Night: Champion, only about basketball. It would not even be a pity to go to the cinema to watch this story, if not for one “but”: the game almost does not react to your successes or losses. Won? Lost? Everything moves according to a predetermined scenario. Sometimes the plot creates the illusion of choice – for example, you will be asked whether you want to stay in college or try your hand at the draft. But no matter how you answer, the result will be the same.

The first steps in the school and university league do not have much weight: you cannot level up your character, and as a result, in the draft you are given a humiliating rating of 55 – lower only in the conditional “Amateur League”. Leveling up is slow and can force you to think about donating. But everything changes once Spike Lee’s story ends (around 4-5 hours in). After that, the real NBA 2K career begins: full 82-game seasons, training, hanging out with other league stars, and appearing at media events. That’s when the thing you probably came for begins.

The other modes haven’t changed that much, but they’re still captivating — there are so many of them that your eyes run wild. Once you’ve pumped up your player to a decent level, you can proudly enter online platforms. If you want, play street basketball with other users in MyPark, participate in 5-on-5 matches, or even assemble your own team with friends, come up with a uniform for it, and decorate your court in 2K Pro-Am mode.

The managerial career in MyGM turned out to be no less exciting. Here, you not only manage the team, make deals, and run the club’s affairs, but also periodically drop in to see the owner — discuss goals, report on progress, and plan the team’s future together. And if you want to compete with real opponents, there’s a similar MyLeague mode, where 29 real people will play against you.

As befits a serious sports simulator, NBA 2K16 has a collection mode called MyTeam. It resembles FIFA Ultimate Team: good cards are not immediately available, and assembling a top squad is quite a challenge. But this time, the developers added an interesting feature – online battles in 3 on 3 format, to make it even more fun.

As soon as you get onto the virtual basketball court of NBA 2K16, the game quickly makes it clear that it will definitely not be boring. Over the year, artificial intelligence has noticeably improved in skill: defenders now act smarter, you can no longer just pass by, twisting the stick and making a couple of feints. You have to really think, build combinations, look for weak points and play ahead. Playing defense has not become easier – on the contrary. Just standing and covering the player is not enough: you need to read the game, predict when and where the opponent will move to intercept the ball, block or disrupt the pass. And the enemy does not sleep – constantly trying to free themselves, change positions, lure the defender and free up space for a partner. NBA 2K16 is a dynamic, “smart” and truly versatile basketball. While many football and hockey simulators suffer from monotony, here each team plays in its own way, and the stars are truly recognizable not by their hairstyle, but by their style. LeBron James and James Harden instantly rush into the break, using their signature drives, and Anthony Davis constantly fights for position and masterfully sets screens.

Often, victory is decided by individual actions – a brilliant throw or a steal at the right moment. But some teams build such a well-coordinated game that it is simply pleasant to watch: someone relies on tough defense and catches moments for a counterattack, others, on the contrary, try to constantly press, take the ball away and collapse the attack, and others show filigree combination play. Sometimes the tension reaches the boiling point – especially with tough pressure. Then the opponent may not be able to withstand it and will start fouling one after another simply out of anger.

True, it was not without oddities. Sometimes your partner suddenly freezes behind the three-point line and for some reason begins to senselessly bounce the ball, instead of developing the attack. And one more thing: newcomers can feel out of place. The game has a fairly high entry barrier – you need to understand the difference between a regular pass and a bounce pass, and the controls take some getting used to. For example, feints and throws are performed using the same stick, which is confusing at first. This game clearly lacks a clear tutorial like FIFA or NHL.

Why NBA 2K16 is considered one of the best basketball simulators

It’s full of exciting modes, everything is polished to the smallest detail, presented with charm, and most importantly, the gameplay here is really well thought out and does not let you get bored. It seems that the developers have thought through almost every aspect of basketball – so much so that it is difficult to even find fault. Perhaps I would like to see more European clubs and a full-fledged representation of the Russian league – then it would be absolutely great.

Every year it is becoming more difficult to surprise players, but 2K somehow manages to do it. The developers are not afraid to take risks, try new things – and although not all experiments are successful (take at least the controversial plot from Spike Lee), it is this approach that makes the NBA 2K series truly lively, rich and interesting. This is probably the best sports simulator on the market.
