Going through the career of your favorite player, you seem to find yourself in the very center of events of the main basketball league in the world – the NBA. The development of animations is especially impressive – more than 5,000 new movements added liveliness and spectacle. This game is just fire. NBA 2K15 hooks you from the very first seconds – 60 frames per second, the smoothest animation and the feeling that you are watching a live broadcast from a real court. The players move so realistically that sometimes you forget that you are holding a gamepad in your hands. Tim Duncan, as always, hugs the ball before the match, Wade hangs on the ring after a dunk, and Kobe Bryant indignantly throws up his hands, thinking that he was fouled – everything is like in life. It is clear that 2K put their soul into every little thing.

They did not break what was already working perfectly – we have the same gorgeous television feed, slow-motion replays, the atmosphere of big basketball. All this still looks simply gorgeous. But there are also some funny bloopers. For example, Steve Kerr in the game manages to both commentate the match and stand at the edge as the Warriors coach. It looks a little weird — like it has a teleporter. But honestly? It makes you smile more than it irritates you.

The new pre-game segment with Ernie Johnson and Shaq was also a pleasant surprise. Instead of a boring loading screen, there’s live communication, jokes, and analytics. It really livens up the waiting process. And 2KTV is an in-game show with interviews, developer tips, and even free virtual currency. It’s an interesting thing, but a little intrusive — it restarts every time you go to the main menu.

But on the court, everything is still cool. The gameplay is engaging: pick-and-rolls, triangle offense, the fight in the paint — everything feels smooth and natural. The defensive AI has become smarter and doesn’t forgive mistakes, especially if it blunders with the ball. And the innovation with the shot indicator is a great idea. It immediately shows why the shot is off and makes it clear how to improve the timing. Learning has become easier and playing is even more fun.

NBA 2K15 Experience: Pros, Cons, and Hidden Costs

When I first launched NBA 2K15, I expected to just relax: a bit of player career, maybe try myself in coach mode. Overall, it’s an easy basketball campaign without any particular ambitions. But I quickly realized that it’s not that simple, especially if your English is weak. For example, coach mode is almost impossible to fully master without knowing the language – too much text, dialogue, tactical menus. Player career can still be pulled somehow, but the pleasure will still be incomplete.

But where I really got hooked was in MyTEAM. This mode literally sucks you in: you assemble your team, open packs, get cards of famous players – from modern stars to basketball legends. It’s all so exciting and fascinating that at first you don’t even notice what you’re getting into. However, after a few days, I began to see the other side of the coin.

The “Challengers” submode is tempting, but expensive

One of the MyTEAM submodes is “Challengers”. The idea is simple: your team must complete a series of challenges. For example, defeat 5 teams in a row using no more than six players from the Western Conference.

Sounds fair on paper. But you get to the 5th match, lose — and… that’s it, start over. At the same time, player contracts are spent for each match. Let’s say you have 13 people on your team — one contract from each is spent on each game. It turns out 13 players x 5 games = 65 contracts for one unsuccessful attempt. And restoring these contracts will cost about 6,500 MT (in-game currency).

To understand: in one game you earn about 650-800 MT. So, to simply compensate for the losses, you will have to play 8-10 matches. And this is without taking into account new attempts. Contracts go fast, even if you play with the weakest cards.

Online mode is a good idea, but the implementation suffers

There is a mode where you play with real people, competing to get into a higher division. The idea is great, but here again there are problems – servers.

Out of the eight matches that I played, in four I was thrown off the field – they counted a technical defeat.
In several more – lags, terrible ping, player names and throw scales did not load. Sometimes you get lucky, and everything works more or less tolerably, but this mode does not feel stable. Everything depends on luck.

Donation is what it’s all about

Now the most important thing. And, alas, the saddest thing. Assembling a good team is the dream of every MyTEAM player. But how to assemble it? Of course, through packs. You buy sets of cards: bronze, silver, gold. Then Ruby and Onyx packs appear, where the probability of getting rare and legendary players is higher. And then the real roulette begins. Initially, Rodmans mainly dropped from Ruby packs, Kirilenkos from Onyx. And there were so many of these cards that the market was simply flooded with them. Their value fell rapidly.
People invested real money, hoping to get rare cards, and in the end they got something that cost pennies a week later.

And then 2K decided to “surprise” everyone even more: they started selling packs with a 50% chance of getting a legendary player. They were more expensive, but the interest was high.
The problem is that all the old legendary cards that players had previously fought to get have devalued. Now the market is full of rare players – Mutombo, Hardaway, Shaquille, even Jordan. Before, there were none, and each such card was worth its weight in gold. Now – they are just a commodity in a new wrapper. You invested money, spent time, were happy with the “dropped” Jordan… And now anyone can pull him out in a couple of clicks. Not because the game has become more generous – it’s just that new packs have appeared.
