Mullet MadJack

MULLET MADJACK is an explosive mix of hurricane gameplay and crazy visual style in the spirit of classic cyberpunk anime. In this review, we share our first impressions of the game.
The developers managed to take the concept of my favorite Post Void (2020) and develop it into something more ambitious. Now it’s not just a crazy arcade race for speed and reflexes – where every delay can cost you your life, and every broken jaw of another robot gives you a few extra seconds – but a whole series of short, intense floors. The game is divided into 10 blocks of 8 floors each, where it takes about 40-60 seconds to complete one level. The finale of each block is a battle with a boss, behind which are hidden not only story inserts about saving the “princess” (rather a funny parody of classic stories), but also a point for saving progress. With each new stage, the world around becomes more dangerous, and the enemies become stronger, turning the passage into a real race for survival.

MULLET MADJACK takes us to a crazy cyberpunk world of the future, where the boundaries between man and machine have long been erased. People here have literally merged with the Network, and the world is ruled by greedy robot billionaires. This is a cruel era, where you have to fight for the right to survive – and it is in such a ruthless world that our hero, Jack, begins his journey. Jack is a silent but determined guy who finds himself a participant in a deadly reality show. His task seems both crazy and romantic: he must climb to the very top of a giant skyscraper to save the girl of his dreams. And as a bonus – get fashionable branded sneakers that every street warrior of this soulless metropolis dreams of.
But it’s not that simple. Jack’s body has a timer built into it, and his life is literally draining away drop by drop. He has only 10 seconds between bursts of activity to replenish his supply of dopamine – the pleasure hormone and, in his case, fuel for life. The only way to get it is to kill enemies. Without mercy. Without delay. Every second counts. Every kill is a few more moments of life. If you delay, you will fall dead. The game forces the player to think quickly, attack inventively and act without stopping. There is no room for reflection: any delay is a deadly mistake.
The gameplay of MULLET MADJACK is a dizzying race against time, where you cut through dozens of floors teeming with enemies at speed. Various opponents, traps, deadly mechanisms – all this will stand in your way. And to pass all 80 levels of the skyscraper, you will need not only reaction, but also imagination: the more spectacularly you destroy enemies, the more time you win.
The game combines the drive of an arcade shooter, the crazy pace of a runner and the dark aesthetics of cyberpunk. Everything here screams madness: from the acidic colors of the levels to the neon-pulsating streets outside the skyscraper windows. And all this chaos is framed by a cheerful soundtrack that perfectly emphasizes the frantic rhythm of what is happening. MULLET MADJACK is not just a game about survival. This is a game about how not to give up when the whole world is against you. About how to move forward even when there is almost no time left. This is a story of madness, speed, love – and, of course, cool sneakers.

MULLET MADJACK Gameplay: Chases, Traps, and Deadly Action
MULLET MADJACK is a real blast for those who appreciate dynamic shooters with a touch of madness. Each level here is a chaotic mix of corridors and arenas, where waves of hostile robots fall on you from all sides. Enemies attack without warning, fire from all guns, and the player has only one thing left – to survive by all available means. You have a whole arsenal at your disposal: from firearms to cold weapons, which you can pick up right on the spot. And also – the ability to effectively send enemies into traps: for example, kick them right into an open fan or onto a hissing bare cable.
Interestingly, killing all the enemies is not at all necessary for passing. The goal of each run is to get to the exit. Usually this takes less than a minute, unless you get carried away by clearing the entire level. Such dynamics make the runs super-fast and full of adrenaline: sometimes you are so immersed in the process that you catch yourself not blinking and holding your breath for several minutes in a row. Structurally, MULLET MADJACK is divided into chapters, each of which consists of ten levels. The mechanics are reminiscent of classic games like Super Mario Bros: nine warm-up levels, on the tenth – a fight with the boss. Only after winning, you will receive a discouraging message: “Sorry, Jack, but your princess is even taller,” and everything starts over again. And yet, despite such a simple formula, it is impossible to accuse the game of plot emptiness. The short but rich campaign contains a lot: there is witty black humor, and unexpected philosophical reflections on the nature of life and death, and even a couple of moments that can unexpectedly touch a raw nerve.
MULLET MADJACK is not just an action game: roguelike elements bring additional depth to the game. At the end of each level, you are offered a random upgrade: this can be a new weapon, an increase in ammo, a weakened boss, additional seconds for headshots, and much more. The possibilities gradually increase: the modest starting revolver gets infinite ammo, the railgun starts working as a minigun, and the shotgun turns into a weapon of mass destruction. However, it’s too early to relax. Lose — start over. If you reach the boss and are defeated, you will have to go through the entire chapter again, starting from the first level. This adds extra tension to each run. Especially considering that the platforming in the game sometimes leaves much to be desired: an unsuccessful jump or an accidental fall can cost you your life much more often than a mistake in combat.
For those familiar with the 2020 indie hit Post Void, much of MULLET MADJACK will seem familiar: super-fast runs focused on speed, reflexes, and intuition. But MULLET MADJACK is not just a clone. The game offers a number of its own distinctive features: a greater variety of weapons, the introduction of new mechanics such as a dash with a kick, which makes movement through the levels even more rapid and combative, as well as a stunning visual style. The graphics are reminiscent of the golden age of Japanese animation of the 90s: acid colors, thick lines, aggressive delivery. During gameplay, this sometimes turns what is happening into indistinct chaos, but the cutscenes look simply magnificent. It is thanks to this approach that MULLET MADJACK stands out among many shooters and roguelikes. This game is not just entertainment for an evening, it is a visual and emotional attraction. Here, it is important not only to win, but also to enjoy every moment of a frantic rhythm, every successful shot, every triumph over another wave of mechanical opponents.
Despite certain rough edges – such as not the most ideal jump controls – MULLET MADJACK becomes one of the brightest and most memorable games of the year. It leaves behind that very feeling of dizzying drive, for which many come to the world of video games. Almost certainly, at the end of the year, MULLET MADJACK will be on the list of the most stylish and unusual projects – and will absolutely deserve to be there.
Pros and cons of the game Mullet Mad Jack: opinion after passing
Mullet Mad Jack is a real treat for everyone who loves old-school action and action games. Crazy dynamics, bright stylized graphics, a great soundtrack and a sea of funny moments turn this adventure into real madness. Are you ready to break into this world of chaos and adrenaline? Then put on your virtual mullets and go ahead — save beauties and crush crowds of soulless robots!
Pros:
- Gorgeous visual stylization
- Exciting, fast-paced shootouts
- Light and appropriate humor
- Quality integrated roguelike elements
Cons:
- As a roguelike, the game is noticeably weak – the emphasis is clearly on action, and not on the depth of mechanics. However, fans of speed may even like it.
- In places, the overly bright palette makes it difficult to see the lasers – not the most pleasant surprise during combat.
- The Russian voice acting is acceptable, but it sounds too monotonous and “not in the spirit” of the overall crazy mood of the game. The translation is also not up to par: jokes and modern words are lost, which is especially offensive for a project with a pronounced sense of humor.
- As you progress, the levels become longer, adding a couple of rooms each time. But this rather stretches the process than makes it more interesting. But there are more and more enemies in small rooms, and by the time there is a third enemy on the screen at the same time, you begin to feel a lot of pressure.
