Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days

Kane & Lynch 2 Dog Days

Kane and Lynch seem to be plagued by constant misfortune. Their friends have unwittingly found themselves in trouble before, yet they managed to escape the chaos, which could have been a perfect excuse to go into hiding for a while. However, as the saying goes, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks—these antiheroes are once again diving headfirst into a questionable scheme, proving they never learn from their past mistakes.

Similar to Dead Men, Dog Days unfolds the tale of two underdogs—Kane and Lynch. Kane arrives in Shanghai with hopes of making some quick cash through a seemingly simple job with an old buddy. However, as fate would have it, everything takes a dramatic turn for the worse. A bullet accidentally strikes the daughter of the most feared and powerful man in China, leaving our hapless heroes with no hope for profit or safety. Their only option is to flee, escaping from Shanghai, from “fucking China.” In the midst of this chaos, Lynch’s wife becomes embroiled in the unfolding disaster, making her rescue a critical part of their desperate journey. This adds layers to their motivation, showcasing the bond and stakes involved.

As they navigate the treacherous streets, these flawed yet charismatic characters push through a frenzied Shanghai, facing relentless threats from all sides—from low-level thugs to what feels like the entire might of the Chinese army. Their struggle highlights not only their survival instincts but also the harsh realities of loyalty and desperation in a world that seems determined to crush them.

Undoubtedly, the influence of the dead girl’s father reached such proportions that it overshadowed not only the authorities, but also the security forces. As a result, Kane and Lynch are forced to be constantly on guard, to live in a state of continuous combat readiness – the guardians of order do not bother themselves with formalities like warnings, but prefer to open fire immediately. In the incessant flow of rain and under the curtain of night, the two men rush from one dark shelter to another, resembling exhausted animals who, wounded, are trying to escape from a deadly trap, rushing into uncertainty and a dark, unclear future. Each step is taken with great difficulty, imbued with fear and anxiety. On this chaotic route, they have to face a whole spectrum of opponents: from mercenaries and police officers to guard dogs, special forces fighters and, perhaps, even the military. However, as the denouement approaches, the series of fights begins to lose clarity, turning the opponents into an impersonal, ruthless mass, whose representatives become increasingly difficult to distinguish.

IO Interactive’s take on Shanghai is a dark, run-down metropolis, shrouded in shadows and riddled with secrets. The city perfectly symbolizes the desperate situation that Kane and Lynch find themselves in. Dilapidated buildings and narrow, trash-filled alleys provide them with a life-saving cover in the midst of furious gunfights. It only takes a second to show yourself from behind a rickety washing machine to find yourself under a barrage of life-threatening fire. However, the protagonists are no strangers to such conditions. They have been hardened by harsh experience, and even after being wounded by a well-aimed shot, they find the strength to crawl to the nearest shelter – such as a massive lamppost – to catch their breath and wait until the blood stops blurring their vision. In this merciless labyrinth of concrete and metal, the struggle for survival never stops, and danger lurks literally around every corner.

Escaping a city that has turned hostile is a daunting and tedious challenge, filled with frustration and monotony. Taking out the relentless foes hiding behind a column is basically all you’ll do throughout your escape. As you near the climax, a flurry of helicopter bosses will descend upon you, adding some intensity, but that doesn’t alleviate the overall sameness of the experience.

Kane & Lynch 2 Dog Days a lot of cut

The arsenal offers some variety, allowing for different weapons, but it hardly matters what you choose to fire. Kane and Lynch aren’t your typical elite operatives; their approach is far from sophisticated. Their strategy remains simple and direct: they huddle behind cover, waiting for the right moment, then shift to a new spot, occasionally returning fire as they move. The lack of finesse in their tactics reflects their gritty reality, making every encounter feel like a struggle for survival. At times, they resort to using living shields, but due to the opponents’ remarkable aim, this strategy isn’t very common. You might also toss a fire extinguisher at the enemy and then shoot it — these improvised grenades prove to be quite effective. A clever tactic, especially in “co-op,” is to flank and quietly eliminate the unsuspecting fools.

A Dog’s Life

We observe Kane and Lynch from a distance—much like a random passerby with a cellphone who has decided to tag along, following them everywhere they go. The Chinese Nokea is quite terrible, resulting in frustratingly poor video quality filled with glitches, distracting reflections, and frequent moments of blur. The constant running makes the phone shake uncontrollably, creating a sense of chaos. All of this can lead to genuine annoyance or even trigger a seizure after just half an hour of this shaky experience. Thankfully, with just a few clicks, you can replace the clumsy cameraman with a more skilled operator whose hands are at least steady and capable of capturing the action without making you dizzy.

In truth, the style, essence, atmosphere, and vibe of Dog Days are nearly the only elements that the developers have managed to pull off impressively, giving a glimpse of the potential that lies within the game. At times, a ruthless shot of a fragile old woman’s head, covered with crude pixel censorship, coupled with the nervous dynamics of a “live” camera, is capable of awakening much deeper emotions than the explicit scenes of dismemberment in F.E.A.R.. There are almost no scarlet splashes or flying limbs, but the developers masterfully play on the player’s perception, using unusual and truly sophisticated techniques.

In a whirlpool of desolation, indifference and suffocating hopeless darkness, the main characters, as if they have lost themselves, wander in the shadows of their own broken lives, vainly searching for support in a world that seems to have abandoned them long ago. Their ghostly landmarks – Lynch’s woman and Kane’s daughter – sometimes appear, sometimes disappear, slipping into the blackness, while the exhausted, tormented heroes try with their last strength to hold on to them. This pursuit of illusory hopes is reminiscent of the rabbit’s fruitless quest to catch an ever-out-of-reach carrot, symbolizing the painful feeling of loss and endless longing.

Pack

The multiplayer experience stands out as far more engaging than the straightforward storyline, though it does have its downsides—everything operates a bit awkwardly, but… it does function effectively. You’ll find three modes available: Fragile Alliance, Undercover Cop, and Cops & Robbers. In the first two, the core idea is quite similar: a group of outcast criminals goes on a mission to steal valuable items and attempts to escape the chaotic crime scene. The stolen goods are divided unevenly based on who managed to grab what, so hesitating or playing it safe is not an option—if you want to rise to the top and lead the pack, you need to aim for a significantly larger haul. Of course, you can’t simply snatch someone else’s loot without facing resistance—numerous bots and fallen teammates will block your path. After dying, they might even take on the role of a special forces operative, adding an interesting twist to the gameplay. This dynamic creates an intense and unpredictable atmosphere, making each session exciting and full of surprises.

The point is that the concept of “team” remains very ambiguous and subjective, which often becomes a source of misunderstanding. A typical situation: you are confidently moving forward, confident in your success, until your former partner quietly appears behind you. He is ready to deliver a treacherous blow and snatch the desired goal right from your hands. But such a treacherous act will not remain without consequences – the truth will quickly emerge, and the news of betrayal will fly throughout the group. No one wants to see a treacherous traitor next to them, especially when mutual trust plays a key role.

In Undercover Cop mode, this feeling is intensified: the enemy can hide very close, waiting to deliver a crushing blow. You must remain vigilant and carefully monitor the situation. One wrong move can lead to a deadly skirmish, where the law will carry out the sentence without hesitation, without giving you the slightest chance of acquittal.

Conclusion

I originally intended to say that Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is often labeled as a divisive title, but honestly, there’s nothing particularly controversial about it.

The narrative campaign is quite disappointing, offering almost nothing for which IO could be genuinely praised. Instead of delivering an exhilarating and chaotic escapade featuring two compelling antiheroes navigating the vibrant streets of Shanghai, we are instead served a dreary and straightforward tale of Kane and Lynch trying to save themselves from dire situations. Their efforts to escape are both dull and uninteresting, characterized by lackluster shootouts against bots, uninspired helicopter takedowns, and a tiresome cycle of moving from one cover to another. This repetitive gameplay fails to engage players and lacks the excitement one would hope for in such a gritty setting.

The “end” catches you off guard—not because of a clever twist, but because, honestly, not much happens throughout the game. Can it really be that these intriguing characters are only capable of running aimlessly while endlessly repeating, “We must save Sue” and “I need that cash!”? It feels hard to believe that such compelling figures could be reduced to such simplistic motivations.

Dog Days would likely disappear into the sea of mediocrity if it weren’t for its multiplayer mode. This aspect is interesting, somewhat unconventional, and surprisingly captivating—at least the multiplayer experience might justify the investment in the disc itself. It adds a layer of excitement that the single-player campaign sorely lacks.

Pros:

  • Kane and Lynch;
  • distinctive art style;
  • enjoyable multiplayer experience that stands out.

Cons:

  • The campaign feels tedious and uninspired;
  • gunfights are monotonous and lack real excitement;
  • the online mode requires significant improvements and patches to enhance gameplay.
