They say beauty won’t save the world. But perhaps it is she who is able to breathe new life into the video game industry. These are the thoughts that arise when you get acquainted with Gris, the debut work of the Spanish studio Nomada.
To be honest, I just can’t talk about this game in a dry and detached way. Therefore, I must say right away: after the release of Gris, the long-standing debate about whether video games can be considered art finally closed for me. The answer is obvious — yes, you can. And Nomada Studio proved it so convincingly that it simply makes no sense to continue the discussion.

You’ve probably heard it more than once: Gris is called one of the most beautiful games that have ever appeared. And these are not empty words. Yes, there have been projects in history that have amazed with their artistic aesthetics – take, for example, the gentle and airy Child of Light. But Gris is on another level. Here, watercolor seems to come to life: soft brushstrokes, the finest lines, muted shades that change right before your eyes. At some point, you stop perceiving it as a game and start looking at the screen the same way you look at paintings in a gallery. As if yesterday these works were still hanging at an exhibition in Paris, and today they have come to life and invite you to step inside. Only 11-11: Memories Retold can be placed nearby in proximity to art, but even there the sensations are different.

There is no need to describe it for long – one look at the trailer or the first minutes of the game is enough to understand that all this is true. And if you turn on the sound, it becomes clear: the music in Gris plays no less an important role than the visual part. Light piano modulations, finely selected accents and melodies changing from scene to scene do not simply accompany the picture, but breathe with it. Together they create an atmosphere not of a meditative trance, but rather of a deep, sometimes tragic, but still bright journey. The journey of a girl who has lost her voice and is looking for it among the ruins of her own world.

Gris’s Plot
The Steam description presents the game as a story about a naive girl who “locked herself in her own world because of the pain that overwhelmed her in reality.” But there are few specifics behind this beautiful image. And it is this uncertainty, especially in the first minutes, that can make someone feel that the authors left too much to the player’s imagination.
From the first frames, we see a girl singing on the palm of a huge stone statue. Suddenly, her voice breaks off, the sculpture of a mysterious woman collapses, and the heroine herself falls down. She gets up, but walks slowly, with drooping shoulders, as if she is carrying an unbearable weight. We expect a jump on the spacebar, but instead the character falls to the ground. All this is presented not as mechanics, but as the language of emotions. From the first minutes it is clear: this is a story about loss and grief, and it will give you goosebumps more than once.

But what awaits next? A girl in a triangle dress runs forward, slides down long slopes, falls down again and again. The locations are stunningly constructed, thought out to the smallest detail, but there is no life in them. Beauty becomes a background for her loneliness. And here the question arises: what are we seeing – an original experience of pain or just another variation on the theme of Journey?
How the locations and world of Gris change as you progress
At first, everything seems simple and even familiar, but gradually the game turns into a classic platformer, where, if desired, you can notice subtle hints of other projects. A little girl jumps over chasms, solves puzzles and gradually discovers new powers. Her dress suddenly becomes a heavy stone – and now you can hide from the furious wind or break through fragile ceilings. Then she learns to hover, flying higher and higher, as if on a trampoline, jumping with the help of scarlet butterflies. At another moment, she swims freely underwater, and yellow butterflies help to disperse the darkness, highlighting the outlines of stairs, columns and platforms in the darkness.
Gradually, the girl finds a voice and begins to sing – her song makes flowers open, from which the same butterflies burst out, opening the way higher. In general, it is not too difficult, but closer to the end, the tests become more intense, and sometimes you can only guess what exactly the game expects from you.
The meaning is simple: collect white spheres. Thanks to them, the heroine overcomes chasms, activates altars and opens up new skills. But the main thing is that these spheres form a star bridge leading to the heavens, to the huge stone hand from which the girl fell at the very beginning. With each new ability and sphere found, this majestic sculpture gradually comes to life and is restored.

At the same time, the world changes, as if it were coming to life on its own. Red, green, blue and yellow tones give the locations a special character and mood. One time you run among bright greenery, another time you soar in the air or swim through bottomless blue expanses. And somewhere you suddenly find yourself in complete darkness, and Limbo immediately comes to mind.
Yes, a lot of it is already familiar – there is the creation of copies of the character (though through freezing), and games with gravity, and water tests. But in Gris all this looks special: ideas are presented through their own atmosphere, style and emotionality.
The game is striking in its beauty and surrealism. At some point, the world literally turns upside down, and the heroine starts running along the ceiling. It all looks like a living fairy tale: the girl is helped by fireflies, small creatures on legs that look like either stones or robots that can be fed apples, as well as majestic turtles. But there is also an enemy – a dark bird, a huge swallow, which later turns into a terrifying black moray eel.
The Hidden Meaning of GRIS
Sometimes you want to ask: why do we need all these surreal platform jumps and puzzles? But art is not obliged to present everything ready-made, laid out on shelves. It can only hint, speak in metaphors, leave symbols so that the viewer can think up and find their own answers.
Gris is built on such hints. From the very beginning, we see a girl who has closed in on herself after a difficult loss. Her world is devoid of colors, and the entire path in the game is a gradual return of color, a search for a path to the light and an attempt to restore the destroyed stone figure of a woman with whom the heroine once fell down. These sculptures are found again and again in different corners of the game, and they seem to remind us that everything that is happening is connected to her personal history. There is already enough material here to begin to understand what is being discussed.

For me, Gris is a story about how a girl collects herself piece by piece, relearns how to live, accepting and letting go of the past. In a broader sense, it is an image of rebirth, overcoming pain and entering a new life. Only this is expressed not in a short “walking simulator”, but in a platformer journey stretching over several hours with puzzles.
For me personally, this was not a problem. I perceived what was happening as an auteur film: you watch, think, try to grasp the meaning, sometimes get distracted, but still wait for the denouement. And in the end, you get that very emotional release – a catharsis that turns everything inside you upside down. And now you are sitting, feeling like a sentimental fool, furtively wiping your eyes and watching the final credits for a long time.
Gris: is it worth playing?
Gris is not just a game, but a work of art that speaks to the player in the language of colors, music and images. It does not force you to feel – it gently leads to experiences that become personal and real. I had similar emotions only in the finale of the first season of The Walking Dead and in certain moments of Life is Strange.

Player reviews on Steam are also almost unanimous: many write about tears, but these are bright, cleansing tears. Gris can be perceived as art therapy – a reminder that even in the most difficult moments you can find the strength to pull yourself together, get up and move on.
Pros:
-
A very emotional story, full of symbolism and metaphors.
-
Varied gameplay with interesting heroine abilities.
-
Great audiovisual design: music and visual style work together.
Cons:
-
Some puzzles and platforming elements seem too disconnected from the emotional line.
