For the King

Typically, we never let ācroissantsā pass us byāespecially those inspired by the beloved tabletop game Dungeons & Dragons. These games offer genuine variety, engaging quests, witty humor, and a true spirit of adventure (especially me, I must admit). However, we regretfully overlooked For the King last spring, and we acknowledge our mistake. Now, weāre eager to make it right, especially since the game has recently made its debut on Console, bringing its charm to a wider audience. Itās time to dive in and embrace the fun!

The main takeaway youāve already heard: For the King is meticulously crafted with the spirit of tabletop role-playing games at its core. Players can choose from a variety of scenarios (or modules) that offer diverse experiences. In some, youāll delve into the mysteries surrounding the kingās untimely demise; in others, youāll embark on a thrilling maritime quest or venture into frigid wastelands filled with danger; and in some, youāll prepare to systematically conquer five intricate dungeons filled with challenges. Additionally, thereās a distinctive arena mode where you can hone your combat skills in endless catacombs, testing your abilities against waves of enemies. Plus, thereās a purely competitive map designed for multiplayer action, allowing you to compete against friends and test your strategic prowess. Each aspect of the game encourages teamwork, exploration, and strategy, making it an engaging experience for all players involved.
In most adventures, we act as a close-knit trio of heroes, combining their special skills to achieve great goals. At the very beginning of the journey, you will have to choose one of three characters: the Hunter, the Scholar (also known as the Mage) or the Blacksmith (aka the Warrior). Moving forward and earning Knowledge Points through various challenges and adventures, you will be able to look into the Discovery Store. This is where you will have the opportunity to unlock new hero classes – among them the Bard, the Ranger, the Woodcutter, the Herbalist and many others.

Tell me what you fight with
Characters in this game exhibit common traits that are assessed with each dice roll (and believe me, youāll be rolling those dice for nearly every action you take), which dictate their vitality, defense, evasion chances, and likelihood of landing critical hits, among various other attributes. These parameters can differ quite a bit based on the character class, either amplifying or reducing their effectiveness in combat. For instance, it’s ideal for a blacksmith to wield a heavy hammer, as its performance on the dice is influenced by strength rather than attributes like intelligence or skill. Conversely, a mage clearly needs a finely crafted magical staff that is specifically designed to enhance their intellect and magical prowess, ensuring they can harness their full potential in battle.
Before rolling the dice, the player can use concentration points to increase the chance of dealing damage. This deliberate tactical action not only increases the chance of a successful attack, but also reduces the risk of the enemy dodging. Moreover, such tactics minimize the likelihood of a critical miss, which can damage our precious and powerful weapon – the very one for which we have made so much effort to obtain it.
Equipment plays a primary role in For the King. Although leveling up and accumulating experience are certainly important, the real growth of the heroes’ power comes through the acquisition of various melee weapons and armor. This can be achieved by completing quests, searching defeated enemies or making purchases in shops. Each new piece of equipment significantly enhances the characteristics of the characters and expands their combat capabilities. At the same time, the type of weapon used directly determines the set of combat experience: it allows you to stun enemies, deliver powerful blows and opens access to many tactical techniques that are indispensable in battles.
The battles occur in a turn-based format akin to JRPGs. Characters stand facing each other, and during their turn, they can attack chosen targets, employ skills or consumables, boost their evasion chances, heal their allies, or make attempts to flee from combat.
Fortune favors the bold
All three heroes move around the hexagonal map in a turn-based mode, which opens up space for strategic maneuvers. Once you use up all available action points, your turn ends, after which new enemies may appear on the map, unexplored dungeons may open up, or individual hexagons may be contaminated with toxic threats. You can send characters to different parts of the map to cover more territory, or keep the squad together, enhancing their interaction and increasing overall combat effectiveness. At the same time, a reasonable distribution of heroes on the map will allow you to cope with missions faster or expand your team more quickly. Participation in random events can bring both unexpected bonuses and serious challenges, giving your adventure an additional spice and an element of surprise.
Challenges frequently descend upon us, necessitating a roll of the dice to determine our fate in each situation. This roll will reveal whether you can skillfully evade a trap, successfully snag an item, take a damaging hit, gain valuable bonus experience points, or, unfortunately, lose them instead. You have the option to leverage concentration to enhance your odds everywhere you go, but be mindfulāits resources are finite and only refresh after you rest at camp (and remember, tents can run out) or by accessing restorative healing services in town. The same principle applies before battlesāyou face a crucial decision: do you leap into combat right away, trusting your strength, or take a moment to roll the dice in an attempt to set up a clever ambush? This strategy could reduce the enemy count significantly, or perhaps you might choose to stealthily slip past them altogether, avoiding confrontation and saving your strength for a more favorable opportunity.
Indeed, in For the King, the randomness factor plays a significant roleāwithin just a few moves, you might find yourself with incredible equipment that, if luck is on your side, wonāt break during the very first skirmishes. On the other hand, your adventure could also come to a swift and unsatisfying end. Dice rolls in these types of games are always a blend of fortune and misfortune. Ultimately, how you approach this aspect will shape your experience. The creators clearly emphasize that dying and restarting will happen frequently, so this becomes a crucial part of the overall experience and gameplay mechanicsāafter all, itās a roguelike. You can be sure that boredom will never be an issue as you navigate the challenges and surprises that await you.
Chaos will win someday
Itās exciting to see that nearly every map presents its own unique set of challenges to overcome. In the frozen wastelands, for instance, if you finish your turn outside a city or camp, your character will suffer from painful cold damage, adding an extra layer of strategy to your movements. During maritime adventures, your ship might occasionally face terrifying attacks from incredibly strong krakens, making it essential to carry special inks designed to fend them off. These encounters not only test your skills but also enhance the thrill of exploration. Additionally, as time passes in certain regions, chaos can steadily grow, or the ominous moment of a catastrophic flood may be drawing closer. These elements certainly add significant complexity to the gameplay, making enemies even tougher and forcing players to adapt their strategies constantly.
To counteract the rising chaos, you can lower its level by accomplishing key missions, defeating powerful bosses, or destroying unique structures scattered throughout the land. However, there’s also an appealing alternative: you can choose to replenish health slots consumed when resurrecting fallen heroes instead of focusing solely on reducing the chaos level. This choice allows for varied gameplay experiences and encourages players to weigh their options carefully, adding depth to the overall adventure.
If all three heroes fall in a valiant battle and there is not a single life left, your adventure will end. However, there is an alternative: by finding rare altars, you can link them to the selected characters. This will bring important benefits – for example, an increase in the experience or gold received, and also give a chance to revive the hero after his first death. Keep in mind, however, that after activation, the altar will disappear forever, adding strategic depth to your decision. Dungeons, however, are especially cruel and merciless. They must be carefully cleared, fighting hordes of opponents and overcoming insidious traps, where luck sometimes becomes the only ally in the struggle for life. At the very end of each dungeon, a powerful boss and a chest full of rich trophies await you. It is important to remember: it is impossible to save progress or leave the battle during the clearing, which makes each case even more powerful and fateful.
For The King verdict
As you can see, For the King is brimming with fascinating mechanics and a wealth of opportunities. And I haven’t even touched on the exciting chance to purchase new locations in the shop using “lore” pointsāthese include vibrant night markets filled with exotic treasures, lively carnivals offering daring adventures if you hold the right ticket, towering structures that fend off menacing krakens, and so much more.
Additionally, the game allows you to unlock new random events and engaging mini-encounters, along with unique items to customize your heroes. Youāll also find upgraded gear that will expand the offerings from the merchants, ensuring that your journey is always fresh and thrilling. Youāll certainly never find yourself bored here, especially in cooperative mode, which is the heart and soul of this game. If we missed out on this gem in the past, now you know for sure that you absolutely shouldn’t let that happen again. It’s an experience filled with adventure and camaraderie that you wonāt want to miss!
- Pros: Improved and varied gameplay, many unexpected events and interesting locations on the maps, a large selection of classes, an exciting cooperative mode, cool visuals and great sound design.
- Cons: High dependence on luck when rolling the dice may not be to everyone’s taste.
