DuckTales: Remastered

Not long ago, I decided to immerse myself in the platformer DuckTales: Remastered, which was released back in 2013 by WayForward. I first came across the trailer ages ago—likely in that distant 2013—but it only recently resurfaced in my memory. I played it with immense delight, and now I feel compelled to share this joy with everyone.
As I explored the game, I discovered that it received fairly positive critiques upon its release, though players had a range of mixed feelings about it. Overall, it didn’t quite capture widespread attention and remains just another niche title of its era, cherished by a select few rather than becoming a mainstream hit. Is this worthy of praise? I think my premature admission that I liked the game already says a lot. All that’s left is to share my personal feelings and come to my own conclusion – because for me it was something more than just another remake…

Many years ago, long before I was born, the Japanese company Capcom released a video game inspired by the legendary animated series DuckTales. This platformer for the NES from the late 1980s offered exciting adventures and treasure hunts, becoming a cult classic for its time. Personally, I have not yet had the chance to get acquainted with this game – as a child, I spent time with another Disney hit: Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2, which is firmly entrenched in my memory. Therefore, my warm memories are more associated with the brave chipmunks than with the restless ducks. But when it comes to the cartoons themselves, I can confidently call myself a devoted fan of all classic Disney animation of that era, and DuckTales takes a special place on this list. I have watched every episode dozens of times and still get genuine pleasure from returning to these stories. These series not only entertained me, but also taught me kindness, honesty, and courage—values that have stayed with me throughout my life. It was my love for the original cartoon that one day prompted me to turn to DuckTales Remastered, a modern reimagining of the 1989 game that brought the magic of my childhood to life on a new level.
Unlike Black Mesa, Mafia Definitive Edition and other remakes, I am not familiar with the original, so I will refrain from comparing the two games in my review. I have a feeling that there are more than enough such comparisons on the Internet, and I will limit myself to just two screenshots for a general understanding.
A little about the plot
I became rich by being smarter than the smartest and more persistent than the most persistent!
Scrooge McDuck – genius, billionaire and treasure hunter
One of the game’s most colorful characteristics, which sets it apart from both classic and modern platformers, is its rich set of cinematic scenes and its strong, unwavering focus on story development. From the very beginning to the end, the player is drawn into interesting stories that never let go for a moment.
The original DuckTales cartoon consisted of many episodes, many of which were united by a continuous plot – an epic story telling about the grand adventures of Scrooge McDuck, his resourceful nephews and other memorable characters. The game continues this spirit in many ways, developing a large-scale and interesting story full of difficult decisions at moments. This aspect of the story literally struck me from the first minutes, and I was completely immersed in what was happening until the very end.
The story begins with the Beagle clan once again raiding Scrooge McDuck’s bank vault. These restless rogues, just like in Episode 39 of the cult cartoon, join forces to break in and seize the untold riches. This opening scene serves as a kind of training: here we are first introduced to Scrooge’s clear controls and special abilities. Mastering these techniques will be the basis for defeating the Beagles and their insidious leader, Beagle Time.
But this time, their goal is much larger than just Scrooge’s fortune. They are hunting for a mysterious canvas that contains encrypted coordinates to five mythical treasures hidden all over the world. Inspired by this challenge, our quick-witted and tireless hero decides to set out on his own search. This is how a large-scale adventure begins, which will take us on an incredible journey – from bustling megacities to the most lost corners of the planet, and sometimes beyond. Along the way, we will meet almost all the iconic characters of our favorite series, and each of them will bring something special to this journey.
Once the story kicks off, we dive into several captivating levels, each with its own unique plot, reminiscent of an animated series. Some of these levels directly nod to specific episodes, while the one set in the breathtaking Himalayas is a very creative reinterpretation of the memorable “Crown of Genghis Khan” episode. I found myself completely enveloped in nostalgia, recalling moments that made the original series so special!
You can tell that a significant amount of effort went into crafting the script and dialogues. Even though Scrooge has 95% of the screen time, his interactions with a diverse cast of characters certainly kept me entertained and engaged throughout the entire game.
Gameplay
As already noted, the main part of the gameplay revolves around the treasure hunt, which unfolds across many exciting and unexpected levels. But how do you manage to overcome these tricky stages? Despite his venerable age, the legendary Scrooge McDuck – or, as he is affectionately called, Mr. McDuck – amazes with his unflagging agility and inexhaustible zeal. In the best traditions of platformer heroes, he can not only walk and jump, but also bend down, climb ropes and rush in mine cars, demonstrating agility that is inaccessible even to much younger heroes. However, the real distinguishing element of his arsenal of movements is, without a doubt, his trusty cane. In the spirit of the cult animated series “DuckTales”, this cane is by no means an ordinary walking aid. It is a multifunctional and high-tech tool with which the hero copes with any obstacles in his path. Whether swinging to reach inaccessible platforms or bouncing off opponents, Scrooge’s cane becomes an indispensable companion on our unforgettable journey.
The strike button allows you to smash brick blocks using a stick, crack open treasure chests filled with loot, and kick various items around. By combining a jump with the strike (and pressing down in the advanced mode), you can inflict damage on enemies, break blocks, and unlock chests at a quicker pace. Plus, it’s just a lot of fun to execute these moves!
The game is fairly brief, yet its gameplay remains delightfully straightforward and engaging: we’ll be jumping, defeating various foes, and gathering sparkling crystals scattered throughout the levels. The more we collect, the more cash we’ll earn (but we’ll dive into that detail later). At the end of each level, a challenging boss awaits us, equipped with an array of attack patterns that will test our skills and strategies. The developers truly aimed to introduce a wealth of variety into the game, which is why each level feels distinct and engaging. We will utilize our unique abilities in diverse settings and against a range of different foes, creating truly memorable experiences, such as those found in the lush Amazon and the mysterious Transylvania.
The final level particularly deserves special mention, as it beautifully merges all the challenges from the earlier stages into one intense experience. It culminates in the toughest boss battle I’ve faced, followed by an incredibly challenging final escape sequence. It took me no less than fifty attempts to finally conquer it! Luckily, I was playing on the easy difficulty for my first run, which made it a bit more manageable. By the way, the game offers four unique difficulty modes: from beginner and moderate to advanced and, finally, the insanely difficult extreme. The last of them is only unlocked by those who can overcome the challenges at the “hard” level. To overcome the extreme barrier, you will not only have to surpass the best of the best in strength and intelligence – you will need to surpass everyone in agility and strategy. I would even say that you must be one step ahead of everyone and everything!
I myself have been stuck here for a long time – the challenges have sucked me in like a funnel. I can only imagine what harsh trials will fall.
Visuals and Sound
What really interests me about this game is its really good presentation in the gameplay department. As a huge fan of the original animated series, I am truly in awe of how sensitively and intimately the developers have addressed my emotions as I play through it. Their approach to creating a remake is one of respect and attention to detail: every scene, every element, every image has been realized with exceptional meticulousness. The characters are recreated with amazing accuracy, preserving the spirit of their cartoon prototypes, and the return of the original voice actors from the 1980s series adds an undeniable authenticity to the project. Even the main menu is a joy to listen to, with a beautifully reworked version of the iconic DuckTales theme, instantly bringing back happy childhood memories. Although the game is richly filled with nostalgic motifs, it greatly exceeds them, offering more than just an homage to the past. DuckTales Remastered skillfully combines 2D animation with 3D volumetric graphics: the characters are made in a classic 2D style, while the environment comes to life in a regularly drawn 3D perspective. This stylistic fusion, in my opinion, significantly enriches the visual perception – thanks to it, the picture becomes more saturated and alive, and 3D backgrounds add depth and cinematography, enhancing immersion in the game world. The past years have not deprived the project of its charm: it still pleases the eye and evokes aesthetic pleasure, turning a return to it into a real holiday for the connoisseur.
The project’s true highlight is the magnificent soundtrack, which combines reworked versions of favorite melodies from the original game and completely new compositions written in the signature style. The funk-style musical themes literally energize and create a unique atmosphere. I would especially like to highlight the tense theme of the boss fight, the dark and enchanting motives of Transylvania and Moon, as well as the grand final composition accompanying the battle with Dracula – it gives the scene a truly cinematic scale. For connoisseurs of old school, there is an option to switch to the original 8-bit sound, which will allow you to fully experience the atmosphere of classic retro games.
Endgame?
Once again, he confidently emerges victorious from the merciless race for the title of the richest duck on the planet. Not the slightest hint of fatigue – he is still unstoppable and full of energy. The story does not end with banal credits: on the contrary, you are presented with an exciting prospect of once again plunging into the path, going through it from the basics of training tasks to an emotional climax, imbued with meaning and logic. Returning to the game, you will discover previously hidden secrets, earn unique achievements and increase your capital, once again feeling the excitement of hunting for ancient treasures.
The received artifacts can be exchanged for valuable pieces of a rare collection, lovingly collected in a special section. There you will find the author’s sketches and concept art, lifting the veil of secrecy over the process of creating the game. Inspiring materials will allow you to more deeply feel the artistic concept behind every stroke. Musical pieces are also not left out: from majestic orchestral compositions to nostalgic 8-bit sounds, all this gives the adventure a special atmosphere. Fans of the original animated series will be delighted: a special gallery contains rare artifacts – early sketches of characters, plot developments and visual ideas previously hidden from the general audience. This is a unique opportunity to touch the creative heritage that inspired the creators of the project.
Of course, only those who like the game will do this. And I am one of those!
Epilogue
When I decided to play, my main goal was to fill a personal void and enjoy a game whose trailer had captivated me years ago. Yet, the experience motivated me to write down my feelings, hoping that someone might read my thoughts and share in my heartfelt, childlike excitement and joy.
In summary, DuckTales Remastered is a simple but truly delightful and well-crafted remake, infused with the passion of its dedicated creators. This remake is rich with nostalgia—for the original game, the beloved ’80s cartoon, and that cherished bygone era that holds so many fond memories for fans like me…
This game feels incredibly fresh and continues to resonate with players, so I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone on the lookout for a charming and atmospheric platformer inspired by a beloved animated series that nearly everyone recognizes.
Yet, despite its impressive quality and nostalgic charm, this game has remained a truly unique project that never aimed for serious acclaim and didn’t create a significant buzz within the gaming community. Whether that’s fair or not is ultimately not for me to judge, but oh, how I wish to see more remakes of classic games based on the treasured Disney animated films we all grew up with! The aforementioned Chip ‘n Dale (both installments), DuckTales, Aladdin, and so many others come to mind. There’s just something magical about revisiting those beloved stories and characters in a new light!
DuckTales 2, the much-anticipated follow-up to the first game! Naturally, none of this will come to pass—times have shifted forever, and the wonderful year of 2013 is now just a distant memory… Fortunately, all the games mentioned are now re-released for PC, so I’ve made up my mind to dive into them and fill in the gaps, including the classic original DuckTales! To all readers, I wish you nothing but the very best! May your youthful spirit and love for adventure always remain with you, guiding you toward new experiences!
Conclusion
Depending on the difficulty level, DuckTales Remastered can be either a casual platformer for a general audience or a stern test that will challenge even seasoned gaming veterans. Its rich visual style and gripping storyline certainly stand out, but not everyone will appreciate the use of 3D graphics. This artistic decision can scare off some players, especially the younger generation, who are inclined to more technologically advanced visual standards. As a result, the game may seem outdated in the eyes of those who grew up with more modern projects.
However, as with the recent re-release of Larry’s adventures, the true value of this game lies in its nostalgic charm. The care with which the developers recreated the original DuckTales is felt from the first minutes, which is especially valuable for retro fans seeking an authentic gaming experience. The fidelity to the source material brings back fond memories for those who grew up with Scrooge’s 8-bit adventures.
In addition, the ongoing trend of updating old hits seems to be gaining momentum. This is encouraging for long-time fans and gives reason to hope that in the foreseeable future we will be able to see modern reimaginings of such cult games as Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck and other gems of the NES era.
9/10
Deja vu
Even if you last played DuckTales many years ago (which is completely understandable), numerous moments in the Remastered edition will trigger a vivid sense of déjà vu. This is largely due to the developers’ dedication in almost verbatim recreating the levels—from hidden treasures to the very last little cousin Scrooge tucked away in that distant corner. Each nostalgic detail brings back memories, making you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
8/10
For Everyone
In DuckTales Remastered, it’s evident that the developers were careful not to overcomplicate the game. For those who aren’t prepared to face constant setbacks and repeatedly conquer the same level, there’s an easier mode option available. In this mode, you enjoy infinite lives, ample health, and the map will consistently point you in the right direction, ensuring you can enjoy the adventure without frustration. The creators have successfully satisfied both hardcore players looking for a challenge and those who prefer a more casual approach, making the game accessible to a wider audience.
Pros
- Real value in relation to the original source
- Reworked, integral plot
- New techniques of old bosses
- Prize special materials.
Cons
- “ventriloquism” of all characters
- Gameplay has not changed and, alas, is very outdated
- 3D models often look ridiculous against the background of the magnificent work of artists.
