It was clear from the very beginning that Divinity: Original Sin (Classic) is a future legend among RPGs. As soon as Larian Studios shared the first details, it became obvious: we are in for something special. Instead of continuing to experiment, as they did in Divinity 2: Ego Draconis with a third-person view and arcade-style dragon flights, the Belgian studio bet on the classics – and they did not lose.
They returned to the roots of the genre: an isometric camera, turn-based battles, freedom of choice, moral dilemmas and talkative partners who constantly argue. Everything we love about real RPGs is here. At the same time, the developers did not forget about modern game development – the game has enough fresh ideas and convenient solutions. Such a cocktail could easily be spoiled by inept execution, but Larian, fortunately, did an excellent job.

The Divinity series has always been able to hook players – each part offered something special. The first game, Divine Divinity, was released in 2002 and instantly became a hit: it successfully combined “Diablo-like” action with a deep world, filled with side quests and lively dialogues. It was not just an RPG, but a real treasure for those who like to explore, choose and influence.
Two years later, Larian released Beyond Divinity – a spin-off, where the player controlled two characters at once: the Warrior of Light and the Death Knight, who were forced to be bound by a magical chain. Add to this a pinch of absurd humor in the spirit of Terry Pratchett – and you get a very unusual adventure.
Divinity 2: Ego Draconis appeared only in 2009, and during this time the genre has changed a lot. The developers tried to take a step towards a more “fashionable” RPG with a third-person view and the ability to fly in the form of a dragon. The flight mechanics turned out to be, to put it mildly, controversial, but the game still stood out – it had many original ideas and Larian’s recognizable style.
But Divinity: Dragon Commander, released last year, on the contrary, was a pleasant surprise. In it, dragon flights organically fit into an unusual mixture of strategy and RPG, and this was, perhaps, the studio’s first truly successful experiment in this direction.
Nevertheless, Divinity: Original Sin is rightfully considered the best game in the series. It was here that Larian managed to find the very formula that combines deep turn-based tactics, a living world, a rich plot and freedom of action, which other RPGs lacked.

What Makes Divinity: Original Sin a Unique RPG
First of all, Original Sin is a gripping RPG that truly rewards exploration. There are dozens of interesting quests, both story and side, lively dialogues, charismatic characters, and plenty of secrets and unexpected finds. If you’ve read our previews, you already know: the game serves as a prequel to Divine Divinity and tells about the first alarming signs of the disaster that befell Rivellon because of the mages. Initially, they used the power of the Source for good, but over time, everything went wrong. Like in Beyond Divinity, there are two main characters – both are members of a special order whose task is to identify and neutralize the destructive effects of using the Source.
At first glance, it may seem that we are in for a simple story of fighting mages and linear cleansing of villains. But the Larian studio, fortunately, went a different way. The developers were clearly inspired by their first game, but in Original Sin they managed to reach a new level.
From the very first hours we are not thrown into battle, but are offered a truly fascinating investigation. An influential nobleman in the city of Seisil is killed, and you – almost like real detectives – begin to unravel a tangle of secrets. As part of the investigation, you will have to:
- look for clues and interview witnesses,
- examine the crime scene,
- enter locked houses,
- open graves,
- reveal the personal secrets of residents.
And all this is far from a formality. The investigation can take a good ten hours, and every find in it is important.
The Best Side Quests and Secrets in Divinity: Original Sin
If you suddenly get bored with the main detective storyline, you can easily get distracted by a bunch of side quests. In the best traditions of Larian, difficult moral dilemmas and outright absurdity coexist here. For example, in one of the first houses you will be asked to choose which of two seriously wounded to leave alive. And literally around the corner, if you have pumped up the necessary skill, you can chat with a chicken and get a task from it – to save the poor thing from the local cook’s cauldron. And in the neighboring tavern you will have to bring together a lonely cat and his beloved.
The ability to talk to animals here has effectively replaced the ability to read minds, which was in Ego Draconis. And it must be admitted – the replacement was a success: animals not only give quests and tell you where secrets are buried, but also philosophize, make sarcastic remarks, are rude, and even reflect on the nature of orcs.
But talkative cats and chickens are just the beginning. Go beyond Seisil and you will come across a talking well, which asks you to find its brother, who disappeared into another reality. And that’s not all. There is a job search for unemployed sailors, and clearing the lighthouse of evil spirits, and expulsion of sectarians from the church, and even reconciliation of two sworn ghosts. And also – the search for the legendary staff, investigations, riddles and sudden turns.
Every step in the game is a chance for an unexpected meeting or a new adventure. Just got to the shore – and there is an orc, who suddenly does not rush to attack, but tells where he buried his brother along with the weapon. Go a little further – you will find yourself in a mysterious cave. It is full of traps, secret passages, pirate remains and … a giant crab. Add here a ghost dreaming of returning the head of his murdered father – and you get a couple of hours of real immersion.
For every dug grave with a secret tunnel, for a hidden treasure chest, for a cave or a house accidentally found with letters from the town doctor, the game generously rewards you with research points. A nice bonus for curiosity.
And most importantly, all this is not just a set of tasks. The world is open from the very beginning, and you are free to go wherever you want. Even where it seems impossible to get to – for example, behind a pile of stones. If there are teleportation pyramids, there are simply no boundaries.
Dialogue system in a cooperative RPG
In many missions, the developers give players freedom of choice – and often these decisions touch on really difficult moral questions. It would seem that there is nothing serious in a story with rude hares or chatty wells? But here’s a dilemma: give the last dose of medicine to a young guy who has his whole life ahead of him, or to an elderly father of a family who has already been through a lot, but is still needed by his loved ones? Rob an orc’s grave found on the beach, or show respect for the cultural customs of the greens? And what to do with the ghost of a murdered wife who must supposedly forgive her late husband – a murderer who repented only after death? Such things are not let go so easily, right?
Each of these decisions requires the consent of the two main characters. And since the game was originally created with co-op in mind, disagreements are almost inevitable. Your partner may see the situation completely differently. It is at such moments that the unique system of joint dialogues comes into play – the same one that made a name for itself even before the release of Original Sin.
When opinions differ, the heroes enter into an argument and try to convince each other, choosing one of three approaches:
- Threat – to force the opponent to submit through intimidation;
- Charm – to apply gentle pressure using charisma;
- Reason – to appeal to logic and common sense.
Moreover, each character has their own strengths and weaknesses – some are good at charm, others at prudence. But a high indicator alone is not enough: after choosing a line, a mini-game in the style of “rock, paper, scissors” begins, where the chances of success are higher for the one whose skills match the chosen style. The same mechanics work in conversations with NPCs – sometimes with its help you can avoid conflict or find an unconventional solution.
Some may say that the game relies too much on luck, instead of simply comparing the characteristics of the heroes. But this is precisely why arguments feel alive and unpredictable. And in a co-op, such moments are especially vivid – after all, this is not just mechanics, it is almost a real role-playing interaction. People argue, play roles, and sometimes – suddenly realize how different their views on life are.
Moreover, such arguments are not uncommon. The heroes discuss everything in a row, not only plot forks. And each such clash of views shapes their worldview. One becomes more romantic, another – pragmatic; one tends to be selfish, another – altruistic. These are not just marks – they give bonuses: romantics are better at persuasion, egoists are better at trading, and believers know no fear.
Gameplay of Divinity: Original Sin (Classic)
Divinity: Original Sin is a real find for fans of party RPGs. It has literally everything a fan of the genre could dream of: a flexible character creation system, dozens of classes and a unique, sometimes quite funny craft.
Let’s start with creating a hero. Here you can spend a lot of time customizing the appearance, choosing a class (there are 11 of them – from mages and warriors to rangers and thieves, and all are available for both sexes) and manually distributing the initial parameters. Choose starting skills, select talents – and here, your protégé is ready for adventure.
The talents themselves are local analogues of “perks”, and they really impress with their variety. There are about fifty of them in total. There are familiar bonuses, like detecting traps, and there are frankly strange ones: for example, the “Zombie” ability reverses the healing mechanics – your character will recover from poison, but suffer from ordinary healing potions. You can also learn to understand animals — and no, this is not just a feature, but a really useful skill in dialogues.
The leveling up here is generous and streamlined. All skills are divided into six categories: weapon mastery, defense, magic, communication, crafts, and thief abilities. Want to be a terror in battle, a master of intimidation, a talented alchemist, or an unrivaled pickpocket? Please. You can pick locks, bargain with merchants, recognize magical artifacts, and even lie convincingly in dialogues. Moreover, if you decide to kill someone, the plot will not notice. In Divinity, almost every character is a potential target, and this will not break the game.
But the crafting system is a separate pleasure. No complicated menus: just drag one item onto another right in the inventory — and you’re done. Recipes can be found in books, and experiments sometimes lead to unexpected results. Literally every object in the game can be picked up and used, be it a saucepan, a piece of wood, or a pumpkin. Did you cross a knife and a pumpkin? You got a pumpkin helmet! Hit a saucepan with a hammer? Here’s a new headdress. This is not just an RPG, it’s almost a theatrical production of the absurd – and that’s its charm.
Effective Team and Strategy in Divinity: Original Sin (Classic)
The game is not limited to just your two main characters — colorful companions can join you right at the beginning of the adventure in the city of Seisil. For example, Madora is a stern woman in an armored bra, a member of the Source Seekers order, straight and sharp as a mace. And Johan is a tanned mage with an oriental appearance, who adores animals, hates demons and dreams of gaining immortality. It is not only interesting to fight with these characters — they have their own views on what is happening, their own stories and opinions, which they are not shy about expressing. However, they cannot leave your team themselves — only if you decide to part with them. Or if one of them dies in battle, and there is no suitable resurrection scroll at hand.
In this case, mercenaries will help you out. They can be hired instead of a fallen companion, choosing the right class and abilities — this is especially convenient if you want to adapt the team to current tasks. To hire a hero, you need to go to the Hall of Heroes – this is something like your base in another dimension, reminiscent of the Citadel from Divinity 2. At the beginning of the game, a charismatic imp historian leads you there, and as you progress, the base becomes overgrown with useful things. At some point, you will even be able to change the appearance of your character in a special room.
But Original Sin is not only about the plot and heroes, but also about truly hardcore battles. The battles are step-by-step, where each action requires points – the more powerful the ability or spell, the more points it will “eat”.
The game does not spare either players or enemies: here you can attack with fire, freeze, shock, blind, knock down, scare, poison, slow down or even take away the mind. Want some fun? Throw a barrel of poison or gunpowder at your enemy – the local physics encourages such tricks. Moreover, all these effects work against your team, so you have to constantly think: what armor to put on, what skills to activate, what auras to protect yourself with – and when.
And there is also an excellent system of interaction of the elements. For example, pour a magical rain on the battlefield, then strike with lightning – and everyone around gets a boost of energy from the current. Or shoot an ice arrow into a puddle – and the enemies immediately slip, freezing in comical poses. You can even break a barrel of oil or poison – the main thing is to lure the enemies closer. And do not forget: the enemies know about this too and are happy to use it against you. So traps are a game in both directions.
Is Divinity: Original Sin Worth Playing in 2025? Pros and Cons
Divinity: Original Sin is certainly a bright representative of the RPG genre, but it is too early to call the game flawless. Some elements of the balance clearly need to be improved. For example, a thief with a pumped-up pickpocketing skill can already fill his wallet at the very beginning of the game and thereby make his passage much easier. The funniest thing is that the stolen goods can be immediately handed over to the same merchant – he will not even blink an eye.
Not all skills are equally useful: why spend points on picking locks or buying master keys if most doors and chests can simply be set on fire or smashed? This makes some mechanics simply unnecessary.
Sometimes the game requires extraordinary patience from the player – you have to look for tiny levers or buttons to open another secret passage. It happens that they literally need to be caught by eye by pixels. And despite long testing, bugs and engine failures are still encountered. Optimization could also be better.
And yet, despite these rough edges, Divinity: Original Sin confidently claims the title of the best role-playing game of the year – and deservedly so. The developers from Belgium have created an amazing combination of classic RPG elements with original finds: there is a deep role-playing system, a non-linear plot, and a balance between seriousness and irony, hardcore and accessibility.
