Deadpool

Deadpool

In the world of Marvel, Deadpool has his own special niche. This chatty mercenary is so popular that he can appear in several comics in a single month. But at the same time, he has never really opened up to the mass audience: he still doesn’t have his own animated series, nor a full-fledged film (except for the controversial appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine), nor a cult game. Everything is limited to episodic appearances – either as an intermediate boss in Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, or in compilation projects like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

Why is that? It’s simple: Deadpool is an “unconventional” character. He realizes that he is in a comic book, loves black humor and frankly brutal violence, and on top of that, he is also crazy. Such an image is difficult to fit into the framework of a traditional blockbuster. However, High Moon studio made it clear from the first frames of the trailer for their game: they understand who they are dealing with, and are ready to show “that very” Deadpool. And, it must be said, they actually succeeded in some things.

Deadpool is lounging in front of the TV, lazily clicking the remote and dreaming about how nice it would be to get his own video game. After a little chat with his inner voices (and he has at least two of them), he decides not to wait for the weather by the sea and takes control of everything himself: he calls High Moon Studios directly, arranges a casting, hires an actor for the voice acting. Soon the script arrives – the postman knocks right on the door, and that’s the end of the teaser. That’s it, they started “making” the game.

Directing here works according to the laws of chaos. The fourth wall is not just broken – it is crumbled into dust. Deadpool regularly blames the player for his deaths, can call the developers right during a mission, and sometimes even pops up on Twitter. Against this backdrop, there is some kind of nominal plot, but it is more for show: the heroes behave as if they just stepped off the pages of comics, and in terms of characters or motivations, they offer nothing new.

What happens on the screen is more of a reason to change the scenery and arrange another meeting of Deadpool with someone from his old acquaintances. You are fighting shoulder to shoulder with Cable, then flirting with Death, and then – a sudden kiss with Rogue. If suddenly you do not know one of the characters, the game delicately slips a button that turns on a short explanatory video. Attention to detail is nice.

But there is a fly in the ointment: the average player will click on these tips too often. The authors themselves joke that they did not have enough money for real villains, so Zlyden and Vertigo signed up as antagonists. Of the familiar heroes of the first tier, perhaps only Wolverine, and even then only briefly. This leaves a slight disappointment, but Deadpool compensates for everything with a farce that does not stop for a minute. The humor is on the edge and beyond, and sometimes it really hits the mark. And it’s not only the dialogues that are funny. High Moon constantly interferes with what’s happening: either they suddenly announce that the budget is exhausted and turn the level into a pixel arcade, or they start handing out achievements for every sneeze, or they brazenly copy a scene from Call of Duty. For this approach, I want to give a medal for originality – even if the gameplay itself sometimes falls short of the presentation.

Deadpool: Gameplay, Combat System, and Game Problems Analysis

Deadpool is another comic book game, in the spirit of early Spider-Man or both parts of Wolverine. While cutscenes with the signature humor are playing on the screen, everything seems fine. But as soon as the gameplay begins, the illusion collapses.

There is no open world, no living environment – only linear levels filled with enemies and scripted events. The locations are gray, difficult to navigate, there are no signs, and the spaces sometimes seem empty and meaningless. There is nothing special to look for here: no secrets, no Easter eggs, not even collectible comic book covers. This makes the replayability almost zero – you finish it once and forget about it. The main menu, however, does have challenges: about a dozen arenas with several difficulty levels. But they do not save the situation, because the combat system in Deadpool is, to put it mildly, strange.

Deadpool Gameplay, Combat System, and Game Problems Analysis

The mercenary has three types of melee weapons, several “firearms” and various grenades in his arsenal. All of this is initially locked and requires upgrading: first you buy it, then kill the required number of enemies, and only then do you unlock upgrades. Some upgrades are really useful – for example, the sledgehammer starts to freeze, and the pistols become noticeably more powerful.

But even well-upgraded weapons do not save you from the main problem – the combat is absolutely soulless. There is no place for combos, style or spectacle: whoever clicks more often wins. If you want to play beautifully, the game will not appreciate it. Just click on everyone in a row, like in a mobile arcade. Devil May Cry would only shake its head.

The situation is aggravated by the shooting, which is implemented very poorly. Automatic shots are unstable, you have to aim manually, which is simply impossible during a combo. All for the sake of turning a slasher into a corridor shooter from time to time, where Deadpool dies from a couple of bullets. In such moments, there is only one option – to sit behind cover and shoot back boringly. You can try to sneak up and knock out the enemy from the shadows, but this works a couple of times during the entire game.

Deadpool review

Nevertheless, the game cannot be called a complete failure. The battles, although primitive, do not cause irritation. There are super attacks, counterattacks, and, importantly, shootouts at least a little, but dilute the monotony. In addition, the authors tried: there are enough scripted scenes, and you will not be allowed to do the same thing for more than 10 minutes. As a result, Deadpool balances on the edge: the game does not captivate, but does not cause rejection either. It just … exists.

Is Deadpool worth playing?

This is the case when the project is objectively made at a C grade, but thanks to its mood and bold presentation it hooks you much more than many carefully licked blockbusters. The entire technical side here is lame on both legs – and does not even try to hide it. The plot seems to exist only for show, the levels are gray and monotonous, and the combat system is so primitive that by the third battle you are already yawning. Let’s add here outdated game design decisions like crookedly implemented jumps – and here it is, almost a textbook on “how not to make a game”.

There is one reason – Deadpool. The same one, talkative, impudent and absolutely crazy. His jokes break the fourth wall more often than in the theater, he comments on every action of the player, mocks cliches, breaks the rules and makes a show out of everything he touches. The game literally rests on the charisma of the main character, which fills all the holes in the gameplay boat.

Deadpool System Requirements

The direction and structure of the levels are also surprising. Despite the overall linearity, the authors manage to squeeze the maximum out of each episode. Sometimes you rush around the office, destroying crowds of enemies, sometimes you find yourself in a cartoonish madness, sometimes you suddenly find yourself in an openly parodic RPG. The constant change of pace, tones and genre cliches makes the passage, although chaotic, almost always fascinating.

The problem is that in between these flashes of genius, you encounter mediocre gameplay. The enemies are dumb, the controls are too simple, and shooting and close combat quickly become boring. And the game is not visually impressive: the color palette gravitates towards dull gray-brown, and secondary characters are not memorable at all.

The result is a very strange picture. It’s not a “bad” game in the usual sense – it’s just that almost everything about it is bad, except for one thing: the creative approach to presentation. But this “one thing” is enough to not only reach the final, but even to enjoy the process. Deadpool is not for everyone, but if you are ready to turn a blind eye to technical flaws and appreciate courage, self-irony and unconventional thinking, you will definitely not regret it.

Is Deadpool worth playing

What I liked:

  • Absolutely canonical, charismatic and crazy Deadpool.
  • Constant surprises, non-standard scenes and genre changes.
  • In places brilliant directing and original game situations.

What I disappointed:

  • Primitive and outdated gameplay.
  • Bland visuals and boring NPCs.
  • A lot of mechanics are clearly unfinished.
