It is not easy to play such universal players – you need to constantly juggle mechanics, but that’s the fun.

Even familiar combat styles feel different. The influence of Bloodborne is noticeable to the naked eye: enemies do not walk alone, but attack in a crowd, attack quickly and in series, breaking through even the strongest shields. Those accustomed to a defensive game will have to reconsider their approach – without rolls and parries, you can’t survive anymore. Fortunately, your character has also become much more mobile. He swings his weapon faster, and after a couple of hours of training, you will begin to intuitively find moments for counterattacks. The shield now saves more in critical moments, when you no longer have time to dodge.

How Classes and Combat Changed in Dark Souls 3

Want to become an impenetrable “tank” who hides behind a shield and then knocks down enemies with one blow? It’s still possible. But this path is no longer the easiest – the game now encourages flexibility and variability. Covenants, by the way, remain, although without any special surprises. Most are still tied to PvP, so there are no global changes here.

But magic has changed noticeably. Instead of the usual supply of charges, the concentration bar (mana) has returned, and now everything works differently. You can’t just take five copies of one powerful attack and fire them like a machine gun – each spell spends as much mana as it should. This adds balance: weak spells spend the resource sparingly, and the most destructive ones – on the contrary. Even a seasoned sorcerer will no longer be able to spam them without stopping. Both mages and warriors now depend on concentration. Each weapon has a “combat stance” – instead of standard blows, you get access to special attacks. And there is only one estus, and you will have to choose how many charges to leave for healing and how many for combat techniques. The choice is difficult, especially at first, when the flasks restore ridiculously little, and the resources for upgrading them are well hidden.

The world around you has changed to suit the new combat style. The monsters in Lothric have become more dangerous and insidious than in the first two parts. The influence of the nightmares of Yharnam is felt here – enemies can mutate right in battle, stretching out tentacles or abruptly changing their attack style. In addition, they are rarely encountered alone – almost always go in squads, where each enemy plays their own role. Without the proper use of weapons and abilities, you simply will not survive until the nearest fire.

And this is just a warm-up before meeting the bosses. Some players on Japanese forums complain that it is unrealistic to defeat some of them alone. This is, of course, an exaggeration, but the bosses have really become more difficult. Almost all of them attack at a furious speed, not inferior to Gwyn from the first part, and regularly change their fighting styles right during the battle. But each has weaknesses: a certain type of damage, the ability to parry, or specific vulnerable phases – all this can be found and exploited.

Dark Souls 3 is like FromSoftware’s final essay on the theme of all their previous works. It feels the influence of both the forgotten by many Demon’s Souls and the fresh at that time Bloodborne. At the same time, the game has become noticeably more convenient: from the very beginning, you can freely move between fires, like in the second part, and covenants are now switched directly in the inventory – without unnecessary trips. But has this made the game easier? In no way. On the contrary, Dark Souls 3 can easily be called the most difficult in the series. Only now the difficulty is not in the endless farming of resources and running around the map to upgrade weapons. Everything is much deeper.

Here it is important to feel each enemy, adapt to bosses, change strategy right in battle. And, of course, explore every nook and cranny of the world – without this you cannot survive. This is the essence of the Souls series at its best. And, perhaps most importantly, the series has not lost a drop of its energy over the years. Each new part developed the ideas of the previous one, added something of its own and surprised anew. The impressions are fresh, as if you are stepping into this cruel, but incredibly addictive world for the first time.
