Dark Sector

Dark Sector

Dark Sector is a real long-term project with a very unusual fate. Its development started at the end of the last century: initially, the project was conceived as an online shooter with role-playing elements. However, the plans quickly fell apart, and the project was put on the shelf. After some time, it was revived, but in a new guise – now it was supposed to be a third-person sci-fi action game. The events were planned to unfold somewhere on the outskirts of the Solar System, and the main character was to be equipped with cyber-implants that give power over space and time. But this version never saw the light of day either. Only on the third attempt did the developers manage to bring the game to the finish line.

In the spring of 2008, Dark Sector finally reached store shelves, but only for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PC version appeared almost a year later – and, funny enough, was released exclusively for Russia! I would like to say a special thank you to the Canadian studio Digital Extremes for such a gesture. Although the question still remains: what were they counting on then? For a couple of candy wrappers?

The game takes place in the former USSR, in a fictional country called Lasria. An epidemic is raging here: people are infected, the republic has been turned into a closed zone, which everyone now calls the “Dark Sector”. As is customary in such stories, the locals have turned into zombies and mutants, and the remnants of the army are unsuccessfully trying to stop the spread of the infection. This is where a secret CIA agent, Hayden Tenno, is sent on another mysterious mission. Yes, you guessed correctly: we are waiting for the cliches familiar from films, books and games about the struggle for survival in a world engulfed in horror.

The first alarm bells are heard already in the main menu: strange stuck together inscriptions like “singleplayer” or “local network” immediately set the right mood. And, as luck would have it, the very first in-game scene: a ship is rushing straight at another ship – it seems like there will be a ramming! But no, this is an attempt to carry out a rescue operation. The old captain gets out onto an empty ship, although his right leg is sinking into the textures, as if into a swamp. After a short loading, everything continues. The main character breaks the guard’s neck and tells his superiors with a broken voice: “I can’t do it again…” I want to ask: how did he even become a CIA agent with such a moral state?

However, the troubles are just beginning. As in the children’s song: “they caught him, arrested him, told him to show his passport.” But here everything is simpler – no one needs a passport: Hayden is infected and… released. The half-dead agent somehow gets to the radio in some barn and again gets in touch with his superiors, complaining about strange changes in his body. Then an enemy soldier finds him, and in the fight, a glaive suddenly bursts out of Hayden’s hand – the very mutation that the developers conceived as a feature of the game. The Glaive (as the device was translated by the company “Novy Disk”) resembles a boomerang with three curved blades. The weapon can be charged with different types of energy – fire, cold or electricity – which temporarily increases its damage and is accompanied by a spectacular animation.

Over time, we will learn to masterfully control this thing. A regular throw, a “power throw” with fourfold damage or a spectacular slow-motion flight, when you can control the glaive with a mouse – all this becomes part of the gameplay. For example, to open a massive metal door, you need to perform a perfect “power throw” – and then the lock will break under the pressure. The atmosphere is reminiscent of scenes from the movie “Wanted”, only instead of bullets – a deadly disk.

Weapons, combat and enemies in the game: the main features of Dark Sector

In some places the game is clearly reminiscent of Gears of War. The camera dangles behind the character’s right shoulder, realistically twitching with short jerks – everything is like in the classics. The same cover system, the familiar red glow of the screen and the booming heartbeat when health is almost at zero. But the constant throwing of the glaive begins to frankly become boring after half an hour. You can change the weapon, of course, but the choice is painfully banal: pistols, machine guns, shotguns and grenades. Try to roam with such an arsenal! And you can’t really live with the enemy’s weapons – built-in infection sensors force them to self-destruct ten seconds after capture. The process is slightly diluted by the ability to simultaneously use a “boomerang” and a pistol. For fans of hand-to-hand fights, there is also something to profit from: punches, kicks, and even a brutal fatality for dessert.

The enemies themselves look like they were recruited through some volunteer agency. They are of little use: they shoot into the void, run around corners and cannot find a way out. But their instinct for cover is at its best – at the first sign of danger they rush behind the nearest box or barricade, as if on a survival course. It is especially funny to watch how monsters, more like hungry animals, suddenly start playing hide and seek, like conscious beings. By the way, there are so many enemies that after a minute you begin to feel like you are in some kind of meat grinder. And they almost all look the same, as if the developers simply cloned them by the hundreds and scattered them around the map. They bashfully appear literally before your eyes, as if Far Cry 2 decided to add a couple of pinches of madness.

Sometimes you still encounter bosses. But here the developers clearly overdid it: almost every one of them kills the hero with one blow. The reward for victory is new abilities: an energy shield that reflects bullets, invisibility, and other cool things. However, the joy is short-lived: the abilities work for only 5-6 seconds, and they recharge in about the same amount of time.

Why the inventory and achievements in the game turned out to be useless

Why they added an inventory to the game at all is anyone’s guess. Open it, take a look – and that’s it, it’s of no use. It’s a similar story with the flashlight: it’s just there for show. And it shines out of nowhere, as if the character is holding it with a third hand. The main menu hides a dull section with achievements: here you have a list of completed chapters, the number of killed “bosses” and, for example, 30 headshots. No nice bonuses like new videos or additional materials, as was in Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, were brought here.

Why the inventory and achievements in the game turned out to be useless

In addition to the single-player campaign, the game provides local multiplayer. There are two modes and five maps. The first mode is called “Infection”: one infected, armed with a glaive and possessing special abilities, fights against all the rest, ordinary soldiers. If someone finishes off the infected, he simply respawns in a different role. The second mode… well, let’s just say we never managed to launch it.

Honestly, no one expected such a hack job from “Novy Disk”. On the battlefield, the fighters shout out something like “Hey, cover me!”, “Damn!”, “Help me!”, “Tell of me!” – it all sounds extremely funny. The music in the game seems to be good, but it completely drowns out the unclear dialogues in the cutscenes, and also hides the dull, emotionless translation. Plus, the sound and facial expressions of the characters constantly diverge. The subtitles are also disappointing: the huge, sloppy text often does not match what is happening on the screen.

Is Dark Sector Worth Playing in 2025?

Is Dark Sector Worth Playing in 2025? Dark Sector has plenty of problems — and they are far from limited to a boring plot, dull gameplay or technical bugs. The game is memorable not because of its bright scenes, but rather because of their absence. The final levels are especially frustrating, where instead of interesting challenges the player is literally overwhelmed by crowds of identical enemies. Added to this are small but unpleasant things like a limitation on two types of weapons and constantly encountering shorted electrical panels, which finally kill the already dull atmosphere. However, the developers did not even try to hide the fact that they were inspired by Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War — however, the result turned out to be more of a strange hodgepodge than a clear symbiosis.

What we liked:

  • The game was ported to PC specifically for Russia;
  • The appearance of the glaive as a new weapon;
  • Excellent development of visual effects.

What disappointed:

  • A hackneyed plot with a share of absurdity;
  • Terrible localization;
  • The game is almost entirely reduced to using a glaive;
  • A ton of bugs;
  • Opponents appear literally before your eyes;
  • Weird physics;
  • Saving only through checkpoints and many other minor flaws.
