Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered (2017)

When the studio announced the re-release of Modern Warfare, skepticism on the Internet was not long in coming – they say, the ideas have run out, they are again pulling at nostalgia. Why now and for what purpose is a debatable question. But how relevant and competitive is Modern Warfare Remastered in today’s reality – this is definitely worth talking about.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was once a real revolution. Almost ten years ago, it didn’t just set the fashion for spectacular shooters — it actually formed an entire subgenre, in which everything was for the sake of action and adrenaline. Back then, it was perceived as a breakthrough: Infinity Ward was called visionaries, and the game itself was the best in its generation. Dozens of clones followed suit, but the secret recipe for success still remained only with Infinity Ward itself and other studios under the wing of Activision. And then everything changed: internal drama, the departure of key people, the creation of Respawn Entertainment and the birth of Titanfall — but that’s a completely different story.

Today, Modern Warfare Remastered is perceived differently. It’s still the same cheerful, explosive shooting gallery with realistic weapons, without any futuristic gadgets like double jumps. At times, the game provides entertainment – be it shooting from a minigun, controlling a plane or blowing up with C4. It honestly does what it can do: it gives a sense of nostalgia to those who miss the “old school” Call of Duty. For such players, this is probably the best gift.

However, along with this comes the realization: the game has become too “flat” for today’s standards. It is easy and quick to complete, leaving behind not so much emotions as a feeling of mechanical habit. All those once spectacular staged scenes that sent shivers down your spine are now perceived as a routine Thursday. And when you remember projects like Uncharted 2 or Wolfenstein: The New Order, the comparison is clearly not in favor of Remastered. Modern action games have come a long way – both in terms of drama and in creating truly memorable moments. Nevertheless, completing Modern Warfare Remastered in an evening or two is like going back in time. Not long, but pleasant.

Modern Warfare Remastered: What’s Changed in Graphics and Visual Effects

The original Modern Warfare itself was good, but to look decent today, it needed a serious cosmetic upgrade — and that’s what Raven Software did. One of the first noticeable improvements was the reworked models: now they have thousands of additional polygons. Of course, not everyone has them, and it’s still impossible to count Captain Price’s moustache, but the game now looks much more modern — it’s not embarrassing to show it to both newcomers and veterans of the series.

It’s logical that the new engine’s technologies migrated to the re-release — especially the lighting system and particle effects. Thanks to it, sparks, explosions and smoke are now not just “there”, but literally come to life on the screen. Moreover, Raven approached the matter not formally, but with soul: for example, after an explosion, red-hot debris falls to the ground, and they continue to illuminate the night map for some time. A trifle that was not in the original, but it is such details that create the atmosphere.

Modern Warfare Remastered What's Changed in Graphics and Visual Effects

Here’s just a part of what the developers have improved:

  • redesigned character models with an increased number of polygons,
  • advanced particle and lighting system,
  • new visual details on levels (posters, books, equipment),
  • increased density of objects on scenes.

The hardware upgrade also had an effect – now there are even more objects on the levels. It would seem, what density could there be? But Raven artists found a way to saturate the scenes with equipment, small strokes and visual “noise” that makes the picture more alive. In that very level in Ukraine, in a dilapidated shopping center, there are now new posters hanging, Russian-language books – mostly school textbooks. And that weapons testing ground, where we competed with the developers’ records, is now literally filled with equipment. It’s just that in 2007, such details were impossible – there was not enough power or technology.

Is Modern Warfare Remastered Worth Buying: Pros and Cons

Unfortunately, not all the legendary moments made it to the re-release in their original form. Remember that fence in the backyard of Al-Asad’s safe house in Azerbaijan? Now it’s simply gone – gone along with the obscene inscription that caused nervous laughter in everyone who played the original. Whether the censors tried hard, or the localization decided to “clean up” the unnecessary – it is not known for sure. And this, I’m afraid, is not the only loss.

Is Modern Warfare Remastered Worth Buying Pros and Cons

Some technical and creative decisions in the remaster also raise questions:

  • The voice acting has remained the same since 2007: where restraint is needed, we get a scream.
  • No new lines were added — the script has not undergone a single line of editing.
  • The enemy animation is still as wooden as before.
  • The enemies “crawl” out of the walls, like in the good old bugs.
  • Facial expressions? Better not to look — it seems frozen in the last generation.

Nevertheless, this does not prevent you from enjoying the game — clicking on enemies with an M4 or AK-47 is still as pleasant as it was ten years ago. But the fans’ anger this time fell not on the developers, but on the publisher, who decided to hide the remaster behind the expensive Legacy Edition. But what is pleasing is that the reissue does not lose its relevance. Classics are classics for a reason: they do not age. Especially if the unfading Captain Price with that same look appears on the screen again.
