Borderlands 2

Creating a worthy sequel to a popular game is no easy task. Developers are constantly balancing between two extremes: doing everything the old-fashioned way and being accused of stagnation, or introducing so many innovations that fans will not recognize their favorite game. To avoid clichés like “not the same anymore” or “spoiled”, it is important to clearly understand what exactly constitutes the essence of the series, and what can be refreshed or reworked. Borderlands 2 is a great example of how to skillfully combine new ideas with the atmosphere for which players loved the original.

Could the atmosphere on Pandora really have changed? The events of the second part of Borderlands unfold in the same place – on a merciless desert planet, and only a few years after the failure of the first four Vault Hunters. Everything is familiar: skags run across the plains, rakks circle in the sky, and bandits, as before, set up camps and wage their war. But something has changed. When the heroes found the Vault, eridium – a rare and extremely valuable resource – burst out into the world. Its appearance attracted the interest of the powerful Hyperion Corporation, headed by the smug and cruel Handsome Jack.
Jack decided to “cleanse” Pandora from the bandit infection and impose an industrial order on the planet. The colonists, not wanting to live under the yoke of the corporation, gathered together and founded the Vault – the last stronghold of resistance. Thus, the plot centers on a classic battle between good and evil: a brutal and technological tyranny against slightly crazy, but freedom-loving rebels. Although the plot is not very original, over time the story gains momentum: we can expect interesting twists and moments that unexpectedly connect what is happening with the events of the first part.
But Handsome Jack is not only fighting with the locals. A new four Vault Hunters are ready to upset his plans to turn Pandora into a giant quarry. And although the heroes are new, familiar archetypes can be recognized in them. Gunzerker is a real “tank”, who loves to shoot with both hands indiscriminately. Siren Maya uses phase lock magic to immobilize enemies. Axton is a former soldier, who is excellent with turrets and heavy weapons. And the mysterious Zero is a real assassin, disappearing from the battlefield and leaving behind a phantom.
The player will have to choose one of these heroes and side with the Vault to fight back against Jack and his corporation. Old acquaintances will help in this difficult task: the talkative mechanic Scooter, Doctor Zed, the arms dealer Marcus. And the veterans of the first part – the Vault hunters – will also appear, albeit a little grayer, but still ready for battle.

Character Progression System in Borderlands 2
In Borderlands 2, the character leveling system remains true to the spirit of the first part. As before, the player earns experience for killing enemies and completing tasks, and with each new level, damage and health automatically increase. Plus – one skill point, which can be invested in the development of a certain skill. Each hero has three development branches, each with its own specialization. For example, Zero, a local assassin, can choose between accurate sniper shooting, cunning, or outright madness in close combat.
To move further along the branch, you need to invest at least five points in the previous level. And there are six such levels in total. As a result, to fully level up a character in one of the specializations, you will have to reach at least level 30. Do you want to be a sniper dreaming of one-shots? Please. Do you like to act with brute force? No problem. And you can mix styles – the system is flexible.
But there is a fly in the ointment: each hero has only one active skill. Everything else is passive bonuses to certain characteristics. This, of course, simplifies the balance, but significantly reduces the depth of development. It would be great to get a skill tree, like in Diablo II, with the ability to flexibly assemble a unique character to suit your play style. Alas, Borderlands 2 does not have such flexibility.
However, Gearbox decided to compensate for this in another way. Remember the challenge system from the first part – like “shoot three thousand bandits with a headshot”? Now these challenges are not just for show. For completing them, the player receives badass points, which can be spent on improving characteristics. Here are some of them:
- Increased maximum health
- Increased weapon damage
- Increased shield recharge rate
- Increased weapon reload speed
- Increased critical hit chance
Yes, the bonuses do not seem significant individually, but together they provide a noticeable advantage, especially at higher difficulty levels.
The inventory has also been changed. If earlier you could expand your backpack and increase your ammo supply by completing quests or simply shopping in the store, now you will have to visit the black market and pay with eridium, a rare resource that is given out in strict doses during the game.
And, of course, the main thing that makes the heart of any RPG fan beat faster is weapons. Borderlands 2 generates guns randomly, creating an incredible variety: from regular pistols to acid grenade launchers and sniper rifles with explosive cartridges. Plus – tons of loot: class modifiers, upgrades for grenades, shields, and so on. It is important that now, unlike the first part, the game does not encourage the use of the same type of weapon – skill does not grow. This means that you are not tied to a rifle, even if it is your favorite. Want to change your style? Take anything, even a flamethrower. The only limitation is the character’s leveling features, because some skills clearly work better with certain weapons.
Borderlands 2 gameplay
The variety of tasks is pleasantly surprising. In addition to the usual “blow everyone to pieces”, from time to time you come across missions with a timer, tasks to defend points from waves of enemies and even quests just for fun. After many hours of shooting, it is especially nice to take a break: celebrate the birthday of the clumsy robot Iron Man, eat a piece of pizza, blow a festive horn and laugh at the jokes of your iron friend.
Most of the assignments come from the inhabitants of the Vault – familiar faces from the first part. Completing their tasks is not at all necessary for progressing through the plot, but it is extremely useful for leveling up the hero. Of course, you can go ahead according to the main scenario. But when an enemy stands in your way, many times stronger than you, you involuntarily return to the side quests.
Moreover, each character here is a separate kaleidoscope of oddities and charisma. Their requests are absurd, but funny, the dialogues are full of signature humor, and for the sake of a new line you go to complete the task again and again, even if it sounds like complete nonsense. Everyone has their own “cockroach”, and you will have to deal with it.
And what is beyond the Vault? Exploring Pandora is a separate pleasure. Not only because of the updated “drawn” graphics – the style in Borderlands 2 is felt literally in everything. Local locations are not about peace, like in Skyrim. Here, even the winter expanses covered with snow seem hostile. Almost behind every hill there is a skag lair or an enemy outpost, and in the sky there is an ominous Hyperion station, ready to open fire at any moment.
At every step there are containers with weapons, ammo in washing machines, shields in toilets and vending machines where you can buy a first aid kit or a couple of grenades. All this is accompanied by cheerful NPC chatter, which does not cease even in the heat of battle. It is the combination of comic graphics, humorous mood and dynamic shootouts that makes the game surprisingly easy and exciting. Gearbox clearly knows how to create an atmosphere. They have everything in order with style.
Combat System in Borderlands 2
As for the combat system, Borderlands 2 has also made a serious step forward. Enemies have become more coordinated and smarter – now each enemy has its own fighting style, which is tailored to its capabilities. The thugs-marauders, for example, slowly advance under the cover of shields, trying to crush you with numbers and armor. Simple bandits prefer a firefight, hiding behind cover – be it boxes or walls. And the thugs with dynamite, as if wound up, rush straight at the player, not thinking about the consequences. Well, the army of Handsome Jack’s robots is simply amazing – these iron things not only know how to shoot, but also heal allies, and some even clone themselves.
Compared to the first part, it is clear that the enemies have become much more cunning. A wounded enemy will no longer stand to the last – he will try to retreat to let the shield recover. And if you decide to retreat, the enemy may give chase. Even mutant bugs have become smarter: they can easily jump onto a roof or other elevated area from which you hoped to shoot them safely. Although, of course, there are also particularly “gifted” ones — those who for some reason get stuck in contemplation of the wall, ignoring all the chaos around them.
By the way, there are noticeably more monsters — about two dozen basic types, plus many variations, difficulty levels and a solid number of bosses. Therefore, you definitely won’t be bored, especially if you play in co-op — then there are noticeably more enemies, and battles turn into real meat. In general, like the first game, Borderlands 2 is worth playing with friends — it’s more fun and much more dynamic.
Is Borderlands 2 Worth Playing in 2025
Borderlands 2 is that rare sequel that doesn’t just repeat the success of the first part, but boldly expands the boundaries. The game retains everything we loved about the original: crazy humor, signature comic-book style graphics, and the crazy world of Pandora. But now it’s all even bigger, brighter, and more intense.
From the very beginning, the game captivates with its energy. At first, it may seem like just another shooter with RPG elements, but if you dig a little deeper, it becomes clear: there is a soul here. The developers added more of everything – more weapons, more enemies, more explosions, and more absurd, but so memorable characters. From the talkative Claptrap to the charismatic villains, every hero here is like from the cover of a comic book.
The gameplay pleases with its dynamics: shootouts do not let you get bored, and the constant race for even crazier guns spurs you to explore every corner of the world. Yes, the combat system does not offer a revolution – you shoot, dodge, use skills – everything is quite familiar. However, the entire presentation, the entourage, the flow of the gameplay make even simple actions in the game exciting. The open world of Pandora is full of secrets, strange characters and unusual tasks. Sometimes it seems that the game itself is winking at you – it is so self-ironic and frivolous, while remaining well-developed and deep.
There are also some downsides. The leveling system, although it works, could be more interesting. Some build paths are frankly boring or poorly balanced, and you do not always feel that the chosen skills have a radical effect on the style of play. This is especially noticeable during repeated playthroughs. Nevertheless, Borderlands 2 is an excellent example of how you can take a familiar formula and turn it into something truly bright and lively. It does not strive to be serious, it does not press with pathos, it just amuses and captivates. And in a world where many games try to feel “grown-up” and “realistic,” this approach feels like a breath of fresh air.
Pros:
- Unique comic book-style visuals
- Bright, crazy humor
- Colorful and memorable characters
- A huge number of diverse weapons
- Exciting, action-packed action
Cons:
- The character development system could be deeper
- Some aspects of the RPG mechanics feel superficial
Borderlands 2 System Requirements
Borderlands 2 is one of those games that doesn’t require any superpowers from your PC. Even if you have an old laptop, you can still wreak havoc on Pandora with it. To simply run the game, you only need a simple dual-core 2.4 GHz processor, 2 GB of RAM, and a basic graphics card like NVIDIA GeForce 8500 or Radeon HD 2600. You’ll need to free up about 20 gigabytes of disk space, and DirectX 9.0c is a must-have on your computer.
If you want to enjoy explosions, psychos and loot without lags and loading times, it’s better to have something more solid: a quad-core processor (2.3 GHz and higher), 4 GB of RAM and a video card like the GTX 560 or Radeon HD 5850. An SSD is not required, but it will speed up loading times – which is especially useful if you have a habit of dying and restarting checkpoints often.
