Alice in Wonderland

alice in wonderland review

Alice in Wonderland is a game based on the Tim Burton film. Usually, in such cases, you want to immediately sigh and start the usual song about the fate of games based on film licenses: faceless, passable, disappointing. But let’s be honest – this topic has already been discussed up and down, and our readers understand it no worse than we do. Therefore, instead of another analysis of the flights, let’s ask ourselves a specific question: is Alice in Wonderland worth attention and can we safely recommend it for purchase? But keep in mind – the classic “for fans of the film” does not count. They have probably already pre-ordered it.

Maybe it’s for the best that McGee is currently busy with a full-fledged sequel, Return of Alice. However, after all the twists and turns with his projects, we are already afraid to make predictions. But Disney’s Alice in Wonderland does not even have ambitions for a rating higher than “Teen”. But the most offensive thing is that in the game about Alice, there is catastrophically little Alice herself. Almost the entire way, she just trots after her companions, and takes up the sword only closer to the end. But you can switch between characters with one click of a button. And you will have to do this very often.

The Etranges Libellule studio faced a typical task: to make a game based on a film with a lot of dialogue and little action. But the French approached this unconventionally – they turned Alice into a kind of The Lost Vikings. In their previous adaptation, Arthur and the Invisibles, the mechanics were similar, only instead of the Minimoys, you now have to control Lewis Carroll’s heroes. If in the movie the White Rabbit, Dormouse, March Hare and Mad Hatter mostly drank tea, then in the game they come out with a battle cry: “Down with the bloody witch!” The Rabbit slows down time, the Hare has somehow mastered telekinesis, the Dormouse wields a sharp needle, and the Hatter changes reality with his imagination alone.

Almost every fight and puzzle requires the entire team to work together, so you’ll have to swing the wimout until you drop. For example, the very first battle with the Bandersnatch: while the monster is preparing to jump, the Rabbit stops time, the Hare puts a massive marble column in its path, and the miniature Dormouse, in the best traditions of God of War (yes, there’s a QTE in place), climbs onto the beast’s head and stabs the needle into its eye. Alice, meanwhile, is hiding behind a rock, trying to pinch herself and realize that it is she who is destined to save Wonderland from the Red Queen.

Character Abilities in Alice in Wonderland

The real heroes of this crazy adventure are the White Rabbit Mac Twisp, the fearless mouse Dormouse, the unbalanced March Hare, the mysterious Cheshire Cat and, of course, the Hatter. At first, we have only a couple of characters at our disposal, but as we progress, others join the team. The controls here are based on switching between characters, which was also found in Trine, and in Mini Ninjas, and in many other arcades. But if in the same Mini Ninjas choosing a character is a matter of a couple of seconds (open the menu, click on the portrait – done), then in Alice in Wonderland everything is much more complicated. Here the characters are changed strictly in turn. That is, if you need the Cheshire Cat, who is last on the list, and Mac Twisp, who is at the beginning, is selected, then you will have to go through all the others until you get to the goal. On paper, this does not sound so scary, but in practice it is terribly annoying, because you have to change characters often. Why do you need to control different heroes at all? The thing is that each of them (except for the useless Sonya) has their own unique abilities.

Character Abilities in Alice in Wonderland

For example, the Rabbit is armed with a magic watch that can control time. Click it and the enemy freezes in place, and a withering flower in the garden suddenly blooms, as if it had just been planted. The March Hare is a master of telekinesis: he easily lifts boulders into the air, and if he wants, he can even disassemble a wall brick by brick. However, his love for throwing dishes from an endless supply of sets looks more like a funny detail than a useful combat skill. The Hatter has the most unusual ability: he can make optical illusions come true. For example, if he stands in such a way that the edges of an abyss visually coincide, the abyss will simply disappear! But the Cheshire Cat can find invisible objects and becomes invisible himself, which makes him a real master of stealth.

Each character has his own simple system of improvements. To unlock new attacks and abilities, you will have to collect golden spheres that literally fall from all the cracks: hit a bush – get a handful of shiny “candies”, open an enchanted chest – bonuses pour in, defeat enemies – here is your reward. However, you can’t get by with just spheres. To buy abilities, you also need chess pieces, which act as a kind of coupons. Want a new skill? First find a queen, and then pay with your hard-earned resources! Brilliant service, nothing to say.

When the controls get in the way of your gameplay

The first thing that catches your eye (and makes your fingers twist into knots) is the catastrophic keyboard controls. The mouse is not used at all, and the camera rotates freely… on the arrow keys. But we already control the character with one hand, and fight and use abilities with the other! So, do we need a third hand?

When the controls get in the way of your gameplay

Here are the main control problems:

  • No mouse support – you have to control the camera with the keys, which is extremely inconvenient.
  • Switching characters in a circle – you can’t just select the hero you need, you have to “flip” through them all.
  • Keyboard overload – some keys are responsible for movement, others for attacks and abilities, others for turning the camera, and there is no convenient option to customize it for yourself.
  • Focus on the gamepad – the developers clearly did not bother with comfortable controls for the PC version.

Of course, someone will say that this can be solved by buying a gamepad, but that’s not even the point. A gamepad is good, but why couldn’t the developers make normal controls for the keyboard? This attitude towards PC players looks at least sloppy.
