The StarLadder ImbaTV Dota 2 Minor kicked off today with Group A seeing its first action for the event and there were some amazing games to witness. Royal Never Give Up, Flying Penguins, OG and Old But Gold were the four teams in the group and with all players having made it to the event without too many issues, things were already set for an epic minor.
The day opened with Jacky ‘EternalENvy’ Mao’s Flying Penguins taking on RNG, with the North American’s easily being the underdogs. The series was absolutely epic, with both teams coming back from early game losses. With a full 3-game series, we witnessed a magnificent Spectre from EE as well as brilliant play all round as the Penguins claimed the win and moved on to the winner’s match.
OBG opened the next series with a win over OG but an amazing Pangolier from Topias ‘Topson’ Taavitsainen secured a decisive game in the series. Both teams threw everything at one another but it seemed as though OBG were going to run away with the game – until Jesse ‘JerAx’ Vainikka brought out a game-turning Echo Slam to give OG a shot at claiming the series.
But it was not to be, as OBG stood strong and managed to take the series 2-1.
The final series of the day would be the winner’s match between OBG and Flying Penguins. It was another Spectre from EE that secured a late-game win for FP in the first game, but with an odd Queen of Pain pick in the next game, FP gave OBG a tied series and a chance to turn things around in a final game.
It was another EE-game, where FP seemed to have lost it all in the early game, but once he got his Terrorblade into the fights, things begun to change. It was a magnificent show from the Russian squad but they had to give up the series to Flying Penguins.
FP secure themselves a guaranteed top 4 finish at the StarLadder ImbaTV Dota 2 Minor and now get a lengthy break of more than two days before they will need to play again in the semifinals of the playoffs.
Tomorrow we will see Group B kick off while Group A’s losing teams will fight for tournament survival the following day.
