Defending LCS champions Team Liquid are likely to not make the Spring Playoffs after losing to FlyQuest on Saturday evening. If this becomes the case, Liquid will be the first defending LCS champion to not make playoffs the following season.
Liquid have had an issue after issue since the very start of the season. Between Mads “Broxah” Pedersen’s visa issues that kept him away from the first few weeks of league play, to Yiliang “Doublelift” Peng’s illness and lack of motivation, the four-time champions have been a far cry from their 2019 form, when they even contested the MSI title. Most recently, Doublelift gave his own take on the issues within Liquid, stating that the “team has just such awful communication that I never understand what the plan is”.
All hope is not lost for Liquid, but their odds at making playoffs are minimal. First and foremost, they have to beat Cloud9 today, who are currently the best team in the LCS at 16-1. Then, they have to hope for exact outcomes of two more matches: Immortals to lose to Evil Geniuses, and either Golden Guardians to beat FlyQuest or Dignitas to beat TSM. This would force a three-way tie, which Team Liquid will also have to survive, and chances for all of this happening are extremely low, given that Liquid are likely to lose to Cloud9 today, which will end their chances on the spot.
Therefore, Dignitas or Immortals are the likely sixth team to make the LCS playoffs. The other teams locked in so far are:
- 100 Thieves
- Evil Geniuses
- Team SoloMid
