The two LCK teams which faced relegation in the 2019 Spring Season, KT Rolster and Jin Air Green Wings, have earned the right to return for the summer split. KT and JAG both survived the LCK Promotion tournament, giving no quarter to Challengers winners VSG and ES Sharks.
The spring split was disappointing for both teams. While KT lost several valuable players who made up the 2017-2018 super team, including bot lane duo Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu and Cho “Mata” Se-hyeong, as well as mid laner Heo “PawN” Won-seok, they still retained a considerable amount of talent and experience on the team. Back-to-back LCK champion Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong took over PawN in the mid lane, while long time KT member Go “Score” Dong-bin stayed in the jungle.
With an inexperienced bot lane, however, KT could only go so far, and the team won just four series in the Spring Split to finish second to last, to the disappointment of their army of fans. JAG did even worse, and only won a single series to finish 1-17, making for a straight up disastrous split.
When it came to the LCK Promotion tournament, however, both LCK teams were still far ahead of the Challengers. KT cruised through the bracket with a 2-0 against VSG and 3-0 against JAG to be the first to reclaim their LCK slot. JAG followed, beating ESS 2-0 in the opening match and then 3-1’ing ESS in the decider.
Although back to the LCK, KT and JAG will need to make some serious changes to their line-up during the off-season. From what they showed in the Spring Split, neither team seems capable of contesting playoffs berth, especially in a league under the hegemony of Griffin and SK Telecom.
