Today, the second round of the Groups Stage began, and from now on, we will know day by day what teams are going to be eliminated in each group, and what teams will advance to the Quarter Finals of the League of Legends World Championship.
This first day of the second round was to decide Group A, where G2 Esports, Suning, Team Liquid, and Machi Esports were fighting for a spot in the next phase. In the beginning, the classification and scores of each team were:
- G2 Esports: 2-1
- Suning: 2-1
- Team Liquid: 1-2
- Machi Esports: 1-2
Anything could happen, but most of the fans had two clear favorite teams: the LEC and LPL representatives.
In the first game, Team Liquid and G2 Esports faced each other, and this time the European team took their revenge for their loss in the first round of the Groups Stage, and at the same time put Team Liquid against the wall, with a score of 1-3.
In the second game, Suning became even more favorite after destroying Machi Esports, but their score was even with G2 Esports, which meant that they could not take the first position of the group for the moment, due to their loss against the LEC team in the first round.
With the third game, G2 Esports vs Machi Esports, the group started to be more shaped. Despite their performance was not the best, Caps managed to lead his team to a new victory… the most important victory since it guaranteed them a place in Quarter Finals.
G2 Esports became the first team to qualify for the 2020 World Championship Quarter Finals.
The fourth game was crucial. Team Liquid was about to face Suning. If the North American team was not able to win this game, Group A would be solved, and Suning will go together with G2 Esports to the next phase. If Team Liquid was able to win, there would be a chance for them to qualify through a tiebreaker if they won their next game against Machi Esports.
In the end, Team Liquid surprised the world in game 4. Suning had lost, and the group was still open (for everyone except Machi Esports, that became the first team to be eliminated in the Groups Stage).
All eyes were set on the LCS representative. They could not afford any other defeat from that moment, and their first test was in the fifth game, against Machi Esports.
This game was the last game of Machi Esports at Worlds, and they did not have the chance to leave with a smile on their faces… Team Liquid stomped them, in one of the most unbalanced games of the Groups Stage.
With that, the North American dream kept alive, but they did not depend on themselves: they would only have a chance to qualify if G2 Esports was able to win Suning in the next game.
If not, Team Liquid would be eliminated and the only tiebreaker would be between G2 Esports and Suning for the first place in the group.
The time of truth came with the sixth game. As expected, it was a crazy game between Suning and G2… but Team Liquid’s expectations were not accomplished… Suning managed to get ahead in the game and take a new victory against the European first seed.
With that result, Team Liquid became the second team to be eliminated in the Groups Stage, and G2 Esports and Suning were set to repeat their game in a tiebreaker for the first position of the group.
