FunPlus Phoenix are the first grand finalist of the 2019 League of Legends World Championship. LPL’s first seed defeated the defending world champions Invictus Gaming 3-1, giving us one of the best and bloodiest series of Worlds so far.
FPX took game 1 with relative ease, the highlight of which was the Rumble Equalizers from Kim “Doinb” Tae-sang, and were on their way to doubling their lead early in game 2, but a five-for-one teamfight got Invictus Gaming back on their feet. Game 2 then proceeded to become the second bloodiest Worlds game ever, ending with 59 kills total, treating fans to a match that will not be forgotten any time soon.
However, FunPlus Phoenix still looked as the stronger team on the Rift. Game 3 became the Gao “Tian” Tian-Liang’s show, as his Qiyana ripped iG apart to put FPX on match point. Unlike game 2, iG felt much weaker in game 3, returning just eight kills to 20 from FPX.
Not willing to give up their Worlds run that easy, iG returned with a late game diving draft in game 4, picking Kayle, Kai’Sa, and Galio. Blood spilled early on in the game and FPX took a quick lead and continued to escalate their advantage, getting closer yet to their Grand Finals spot, until a quadra kill from Kang “TheShy” Seung-lok gave fans a hope that they were going for another game 2 spectacle.
That hope was shortlived, however. A silly face-check by Kai’Sa and Kayle resulted in both of iG’s carries dead, which freed up Baron for FPX. The next team fight was a four-for-two in FPX’s favor and from there, getting to the Nexus was just a matter of time.
FPX will now wait for the winner of G2 Esports and SK Telecom T1, to decide the second Worlds 2019 grand finalist tomorrow.
