Subnautica 2 is an underwater survival game where you’ll spend almost all your time scavenging for resources. Without them, there’s no story, no cool base, and no vehicles. Sulfur is one of the trickiest materials. You need it from the very first minutes until the credits roll, but you won’t find it near the escape pod. The good news: you don’t need much. One successful foray, and the problem is solved for dozens of hours.

What is sulfur used for: recipes and essential tools

Repair tool crafting materials

  • Repair tool — without it, you can’t repair the base or the Cyclops (when it becomes available).
  • Strong acid — an ingredient for advanced chemistry.
  • But most importantly, Advanced Wiring Kits. This is a high-tech construction kit: without them, you can’t build either vehicles or Dedicated Cores.

Important note:

Subnautica 2 is currently in Early Access. Locations and recipes may change with updates in 2026 — keep this in mind.

How to get sulfur in Subnautica 2 early on?

Sulfur and gold are like twins in this game. They’re found in the same places and are often needed together. To get them, you’ll first have to clear the Angel’s Crest of its infestation. Inside, you’ll find Heat Adaptation—without it, you can’t enter the required biome.

Small sulfur gold deposits

Got it? Then head east of the Escape Pod, about 230 meters. There are rocky branches with golden flecks there. Mostly small deposits, but enough to get you started.

The best coordinates for sulfur and gold deposits

If you want volume, don’t skimp. Large sulfur deposits yield 4-5 units each. But to mine them, you’ll need a Sonic Resonator. It’s a specialized tool, but it pays off handsomely.

Let’s follow the list. All coordinates are from the Escape Pod.

Rocky Peak: Shallow Sulfur Farming

457 meters to the east, depth of only 22 meters. Once you get there, you’ll see a rocky peak jutting straight out of the water. It’s strewn with deposits. A couple of trips and your inventory will be full.

Underground Cave: A location with rich deposits

561 meters, direction 105°, depth 156 meters. There’s an entrance to a cave that leads to a huge open space. Inside is another peak, and the entire area is literally brimming with sulfur. A very lucrative spot.

Aksum Biome: Mining resources at a depth of 300 meters

1450 meters, direction 105°, depth 300 meters. This is the Aksum Biome. It makes sense to visit this area once you’ve established yourself in the region. However, there are dozens of large deposits.

Deepwater Points: Maximum Sulfur Deposits

1730 meters, direction 105°, depth 290 meters. Almost next to this point. If you suddenly ran out of sulfur in the previous location (unlikely), come here. There’s even more there.

Incidentally, small deposits are good for quick crafting. But when you need a real pile, hit the big stuff with a resonator. Subnautica 2 doesn’t forgive those who skimp on tools.

5 critical errors when harvesting sulfur in Subnautica 2

Farming this resource regularly turns into a simulator of loading the last save. People descend to the depths, see the coveted yellow crystals, and completely turn off their survival instinct. Let’s examine the key failures.

Oxygen Deficiency and Rebreather Use

It’s one thing to dig a shallow cave near a rocky peak at a comfortable 22 meters. It’s safe. But when you dive to a cave peak (156 meters) or descend to the Axums (290-300 meters), oxygen begins to evaporate at an alarming rate. A rebreather is absolutely essential here! Players often experience “tunnel vision” as a diver. They get carried away by a large deposit and don’t check their tank. The outcome is predictable. The ironclad rule of survival: if you have 30 seconds of oxygen left and there’s no transport nearby, drop everything and surface.

Thermal Damage and Protection Angel’s Crest

Geothermal zones are a veritable Klondike, with sulfur literally piled high. But the water boils. If you venture there without the “High Temperature Adaptation” upgrade, your character will start frying, taking thermal damage every couple of seconds. It’s a one-way trip. First, clear out the Angel’s Crest, loot the necessary blueprints, and only then dive into the boiling water.

A Sound Resonator for Efficient Farming

Hand-picking up scattered loot is a waste of time (you’ll only get a measly 1-2 units). But the Sound Resonator can knock out 4-5 pieces from a large deposit. The difference is colossal. The device is crafted from basic junk and pays for itself instantly. Don’t make five trips for something you can snag in one.

How to distinguish sulfur crystals from gold nuggets?

It’s easy to make a mistake in hot springs. Both resources are yellow, are found in the same biomes, and are needed at adjacent stages of development. But sulfur appears as matte, angular crystals. Gold, on the other hand, shines brightly and has an orange tint. Swim close. Be sure to read the tooltip before collecting, especially if your tank is empty and your health is already flashing red.

Building a Base for Fast Farming in Axum

Planning to regularly grind Axum at a monstrous 1430–1730 meters? Build a local base. Without an intermediate outpost with a refining station, you’ll waste hours running back and forth. A tiny station with an oxygen point turns a stuffy grind into an easy 20-minute stroll.

Survival Table: How to quickly gather a lot of sulfur?

Farming Mistake Consequences Optimal Solution
Ignoring ‘Heat Adaptation’ Death from thermal damage Loot ‘Angel’s Crest’ first
Working without Sound Resonator Mining speed 4-5x slower Craft device before departing
Descending 150m+ without upgrades Immediate O2 shortage Equip Rebreather
Visual confusion Inventory gets full of gold Read tooltips carefully
No base near Aksum Wasting hours on expeditions Build a temporary outpost
