For weeks, the internet was buzzing with speculation: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 entries appeared in the PS Store database, age ratings were quietly updated, and fans were increasingly convinced remasters were on the way. Treyarch said nothing. Then they finally spoke up — and what they revealed wasn’t quite what most people were hoping for.

No remasters. The classic entries in the series are simply coming to PlayStation as they are — as ports. But they’re arriving in July.

What Treyarch Actually Announced: A Port, Not a Remaster — Why It Matters

The studio posted a brief statement on X: the original Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will be brought to PlayStation consoles by partner studio Iron Galaxy Studios.

The word “remaster” never appeared in the official announcement. And that’s a significant distinction.

Feature Remaster Port (this case)
Visuals Upgraded for modern hardware Original graphics
Performance Often 60+ fps, 4K Depends on the studio
Content Sometimes includes bonus content Original game, unchanged
Development cost High Significantly lower
Fan expectations High Mixed

Treyarch did confirm one important thing: all game modes are included — campaigns, multiplayer, and the iconic Zombies mode for both titles. Nothing cut.

Who Is Iron Galaxy and Why Are They Handling the Black Ops Port

Iron Galaxy Studios is no stranger to porting. The studio has previously handled ports of Borderlands 2 on PS Vita, Killer Instinct, and several other titles. Porting is their specialty — which partly explains why this is a straight transfer rather than a full-scale rework.

Treyarch’s role here appears to be that of rights holder and supervisor, not the hands-on developer of these new versions.

Black Ops and Black Ops 2 PS4 and PS5 Release Date — What We Know

An exact date hasn’t been confirmed yet, but Treyarch stated clearly that the release is planned for July 2026. The target platforms are PS4 and PS5. No Xbox or PC versions were mentioned in the announcement — which makes sense given the existing agreement between Microsoft/Activision and Sony.

Key release details at a glance:

  • Platforms: PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
  • Release window: July 2026
  • Developer: Iron Galaxy Studios
  • Included content: Campaigns, multiplayer, and Zombies modes for both games
  • Visual upgrades: Not officially confirmed

Why the Leaked Listings Had No “Remastered” Label — Now It All Makes Sense

When Black Ops and Black Ops 2 appeared in PS Store databases and fresh age rating filings — without the “Remastered” tag — some fans assumed it was a branding decision or an oversight. It wasn’t. There’s no remaster label because there’s no remaster.

That settles the debate around new textures, reworked UI, or bonus content. Don’t expect them. These releases are positioned as a way to play the classics on current hardware — not as anniversary editions or definitive versions.

What the Black Ops PS4 and PS5 Ports Mean for Players

On the positive side, fans will finally be able to legally play Black Ops and Black Ops 2 on PS4 and PS5 — games that have been practically inaccessible on PlayStation since the PS3 era. On the other hand, many were hoping for more: updated visuals, fresh servers, maybe even cross-play support.

The state of the multiplayer servers is also an open question. Online play in the original Black Ops 1 and 2 on PC and legacy consoles has been deteriorating for years. How Iron Galaxy plans to handle the netcode and server infrastructure for the PS4/PS5 versions hasn’t been addressed yet.

Still, for a huge number of players who don’t have Xbox backward compatibility or an old PS3 collecting dust, this is a genuine opportunity to revisit Black Ops 2’s Zombies or replay the first game’s memorable campaign.

July is just around the corner. Pricing and a firm release date are still missing — expect those to surface either through Iron Galaxy or via a PS Store listing. Until then, the biggest unanswered question isn’t whether the ports are coming, but how well they’ll actually run.
