Nearly 23 million soldiers have already fought for “managed democracy” — and that milestone was reached before Helldivers 2 became available through PlayStation Plus. Sony has quietly revealed new statistics for its cooperative shooter: by August 9, 2026, more than 22.9 million people had joined the fight.
The figure covers all available platforms: PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, it represents the game’s total audience rather than copies sold or concurrent players. Someone who launched Helldivers 2 on several platforms may theoretically have been counted more than once, as Sony did not explain its methodology in detail.

How Many People Have Played Helldivers 2?
The latest milestone shows how much the game’s audience has expanded since its original release. Helldivers 2 launched on PC and PS5 in February 2024 before arriving on Xbox Series X|S in August 2025. Crossplay allows users across all three platforms to participate in the same Galactic War.
For comparison, the game sold 12 million copies during its first 12 weeks, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation release at the time. By January 2026, analysts estimated that total sales had exceeded 20 million copies. Sony’s new official figure does not necessarily point to another sudden sales surge, but it does confirm that the game’s overall reach has continued to grow.
It is important not to confuse 22.9 million players with the active player count. The number shows how many users have entered the game at least once since launch, but it does not reveal how many return every day or month.
PlayStation Plus Could Expand the Helldivers 2 Audience
The statistics were recorded before Helldivers 2 joined the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalog. Subscribers on the relevant tiers can now try the shooter without purchasing it separately, meaning the actual audience is likely already higher than the announced 22.9 million.
For existing players, that matters more than the impressive headline figure itself. An influx of new recruits can reduce matchmaking times, bring more activity to less popular difficulty levels and give Arrowhead another reason to continue producing major updates. Thanks to crossplay, the arrival of PlayStation Plus users may also affect matchmaking on PC and Xbox.
Helldivers 2 still faces technical issues and occasional criticism over its balancing decisions, but the game continues to attract attention more than two years after launch. The next meaningful test will not simply be reaching another audience milestone, but whether Arrowhead can turn the new wave of PlayStation Plus recruits into permanent participants in the Galactic War.
