Ex-England and Manchester United football star David Beckham is now the co-owner of the esports organization, Guild Esports. The organization received a big investment from the celebrity athlete. Blue Star Capita PLC, a company based out of London, owns the organization.
The team will be based on the United Kingdom and hopes to drive the region further up the food chain in terms of esports where it’s currently lacking. Guild Esports will be focusing on Rocket League, FIFA, and Fortnite in the beginning.
“Guild intends to develop into various esports disciplines over the course of the 2020/2021 season, with its first team making its debut in autumn 2020 expecting to compete in the most popular titles including Rocket League, EA Sports FIFA and Fortnite,” the official press release from Blue Star Capital reads.
An academy model will be used where rising stars will be coached and guided by professional level players and experts. In addition, the organization will feature scouts looking to bring those upcoming talents into the fold.
Beckham joins a quickly growing cast of celebrities, athletes, and more jumping into esports with the industry currently being valued at $1.1 billion with estimates of a 42% growth to $1.56 billion by 2023.
