Virtus.pro’s MDL Macau 2019 run has been marred with sub-par Dota 2 action and multiple losses but luckily the tournament is not over for the CIS squad with no teams being eliminated until the playoffs.

Virtus.pro have barely shown up at MDL Macau 2019, even after being earmarked as favourites for the event, the team opened up day one yesterday with a victory but then dropped two games following that. Today followed suit as they claimed victory over EHOME before losing their next three matches and falling into the lower bracket of the playoffs. While the team may be taking it slow and not being too worried about the outcome of a non-DPC event, the games have not been exciting except for moments in their match against Team Liquid.

VP’s games may not have been exciting but their drop to the lower bracket will mean that they have to fight in a best-of-one elimination match tomorrow to avoid being sent home early. Their challenger for the match will be Invictus Gaming who dominated them in a Bo1 today.

One squad that made the biggest comeback today was Invictus Gaming. The Chinese team have not made any showing in the Dota 2 scene for a very long time and after going down 0-3 on day one, they seemed to be down-and-out. However, today saw a massive resurgence from them as they took down VP, Evil Geniuses and Royal Never Give Up – before succumbing to Newbee in their final match of the group stage. The loss meant that they would also fall into the lower bracket but things were definitely looking up for iG.

EHOME, suffering from the absence of Zhang ‘Faith_bian’ Ruida due to an injury, seemed to be having an extremely tough time adapting to anything. Much like VP, the team only managed two victories over the 2-day group stage and would be fighting for tournament survival tomorrow in the lower bracket.

The final matchup of the group stages was a massive brawl between Vici Gaming and Team Liquid – which resulted in the top team in the group, Liquid, losing.

The win secured VG their spot in the upper bracket of the playoffs alongside EG and RNG too. Newbee were unfortunately dropped into the lower bracket due to VG’s antics too and will face the daunting lower bracket tomorrow. MDL Macau 2019 will see two teams in the lower bracket head home tomorrow but only after the upper bracket teams fight for a guaranteed spot in the top 4 of the event.
