ESL One Germany 2020 continued today as the third round the group stage got underway and, with that, the first team would be eliminated from the tournament, with either EXTREMUM or Cyber Legacy losing their third series.
With the modified Swiss-format round robin group stage of ESL One Germany 2020, any team that would lose a total of three series early on in the event, would find themselves swiftly eliminated. For both EXTREMUM and Cyber Legacy, this was already something that was staring them in the face as the third round of the group stage begun – and both teams would need to throw everything at one another to avoid an early exit.
With two teams battling for their tournament lives, the series was exactly what we expected from these two squads – one coming through from the closed qualifiers and the other receiving a direct invite. However, both teams have struggled through their first two series and thus would require a victory today to stay against each other to remain in the event. Although EXTREMUM destroyed CL in game one, leaving them with only nine kills through the half an hour battle, CL found their footing and tied up the series in the next, leaving one final game to decide the first elimination for ESL One Germany 2020.
Even though EXTREMUM had a Medusa, which could have turned things around late in the game, they could not withstand CL’s lineup, falling far behind and never being able to quite make it back. Although they threw everything they could at CL, it just wasn’t enough as they would go down 1-2.
With that, CL would ensure that their tournament lives remained intact for at least one more round of ESL One Germany 2020’s round robin group stage. Unfortunately for EXTREMUM, they will be the first team eliminated from the event, with two days of games to go in round three and another two weeks of group stage action to follow.
