Evil Geniuses decided to release their captain Rasmus “MISERY” Filipsen after being the first team to be eliminated from the ESL One Birmingham.

Misery joined EG mid-December last year, but since his arrival, the NA team didn’t secure a top four placement at any of the Majors and won just one Minor. The lackluster performances added a lot of pressure on the players as the season is getting to a close and EG were still looking for a Dota Pro Circuit title to get themselves among the top eight ranked teams that would secure a TI8 direct invite. Despite their struggles to stay relevant and despite losing a few qualifiers to some of this year’s tournaments, EG have got a couple of direct invites lately, including to the recently ended ESL One Birmingham Major and to the China Super Major.

This past week in Birmingham EG got drawn in the same group with Virtus.pro, Fnatic and Team Spirit and needed to place second in their group in order to advance to the playoffs. However, after losing the best-of-one opener against Fnatic, EG went on losing 0-2 to Team Spirit and were the first squad sent packing.

The ESL One Birmingham group result was one of the most disastrous they had in a long time and moments after their elimination, the organization made a short post on their Facebook page in which they said: “we realize that change is necessary to reverse our fortunes and achieve our goals”.

Before EG would bring any updates, Misery tweeted today “I have been kicked from EG, I’m happy and relieved to be out. Thanks for all your support while in the team!” Less than an hour later, also on Twitter, Evil Geniuses confirmed his release from the roster and mentioned that an update on who will replace him will be made sometime before the SuperMajor. The said tournament is the very last one in the Dota Pro Circuit and will take place from 2nd of June to 10th in Shanghai China. Misery’s removal means that EG will not able to make any use of the DPC points available at the Super Major and regardless of their results in China, the team will be forced to take the open qualifiers road for The International 2018.

Evil Geniuses current roster:

– Artour “Arteezy” Babaev
– Clinton “Fear” Loomis
– Syed Sumail “SumaiL” Hassa
– Andreas Franck “Cr1t-” Nielsen
