The location of the first Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major of 2020 has been revealed. Rio de Janeiro will be host to the first Major of 2020 according to a report from DBLTAP.
ESL One Rio Major as it’s expected to be titled will be the seventh Major that ESL has hosted since the Valve-backed Majors came into existence. The Majors typically have $1 million up for grabs thanks to Valve’s involvement.
This isn’t the first that the community has heard regarding a Major coming to Brazil as these rumors have been making their way around for months and were added to when Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev made the claim during a live stream to Instagram.
The most recent Major was run by StarLadder in Berlin, Germany and saw Astralis win yet another iteration of the prestigious event. ESL’s last Major was IEM Katowice which also saw the Danish powerhouse walk away with the trophy.
In what may have been a bit of a market test, Modern Times Group, the company behind ESL and DreamHack, held a DreamHack Open tournament in Rio de Janeiro 7 months ago. In terms of Brazil as a whole, ESL has run multiple events in different cities including São Paulo and Belo Horizonte.
